 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Arrangement for extinguishing high voltage arcs.

   The use of pressurized gas to extinguish high-voltage arcs is known per se, but efforts in this regard have only recently led to useful results. The extinguishing effect of the compressed gas in the previously known constructions is composed of the following components: a) Influence of the ion movement by the gas jet (removal of ions from the arc). b) Mechanical force on the arc (expansion, lengthening and tearing). c) Cooling influence of the gas flow on the electrodes or the arc roots.

   In a known arrangement, the base points of the arc that is formed sit, for example, on the one hand at the tip of a center contact and, on the other hand, on the inner surface of rotation of a ring contact that interacts with it. Under all circumstances, the ions emerging from the central contact must be carried past the ring contact in the area of full field strength, so that despite the relatively low ion velocity with the usual voltages, the need for enormously high blowing pressures results. In addition, the asymmetrical contact arrangement gives rise to the fear that the switching process will depend on the respective current direction at the moment the interruption starts, i.e. that the switch shows polarity.

   The cooling influence of the compressed gas can only be partially used with this contact arrangement, namely at the center contact tip, while the second base point of the arc, which is just outside the gas flow just before it breaks off, is therefore not properly blown. The mechanical force of the compressed gas only acts within a relatively short distance, which limits the possible expansion of the arc. With this construction, care is taken primarily to force the breaking of the arc only at the center electrode, which intention, as can be seen from the published test results, was achieved.

   Another type of switch with symmetrical or mirror-inverted contacts is already known; The arc is drawn in a chamber transversely to the essentially straight gas jet, so the gas jet hits the arc and its root points at the moment of formation, but the migration of the arc root points is possible without difficulty after areas of relatively low blowing and is made through the tendency of the arc to form arcuately supported. In this state, the effectiveness of the gas jet remains mainly limited to the central part of the arc, the risk of reignition from the hot base points remains.

   Together with the design discussed first, this design also has the disadvantage of the short possible arc length. Already known constructions with tubular contacts in a switching chamber would also allow practically unlimited arc lengths. If the arc root points are forced to migrate inside the tubes from the contact points to the outside, arc lengths of any size can be achieved in this way. However, the previously known constructions will not meet this requirement as a result of incorrect contact formation, which gives rise to the damming of the gas jet, since the arc root can get stuck on the outside of the pointed main contact.

   In the absence of suitable contact forms of these known switch constructions and corresponding air ducting for the conduction of the gas flow, the formation of dead zones in which an arc root point can be permanently maintained is not avoided, which is also the case despite the tubular ones

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Contact training the possible effect of the arc extension can not be achieved to the full extent.

   According to the invention, the arrangement described below and shown schematically in the drawing avoids all of these disadvantages. The piston-shaped, especially z. B. mushroom-shaped contacts K are slidably arranged in a tube. The compressed gas is supplied to the annular space R in any way (not shown in the drawing), with the outer surface of the annular space R, which is not required at this point for guiding the piston-shaped contacts, also bulging or in a manner required for the uniform introduction of gas can be designed (e.g. as a spiral housing). When switched off, the compressed gas causes the contacts K to diverge either directly or with the help of special control pistons.

   The arc is created between the two circular contact surfaces of the contacts K and is blown inward by the compressed gas flowing radially on all sides. Since the two circular ring surfaces lie in planes parallel to one another, the arc does not need to change its length as it migrates inwards and therefore only offers little resistance to the displacement of its base points. The two arc root points therefore reach the inner edge of the circular ring surface after a short time and only migrate under the influence of the flowing pressurized gas in mutually opposite directions along the inner surface of the tubular exhaust space AR.

   It is essential that the flow of pressurized gas automatically splits into two parts, each of which blows only one electrode, thus avoiding the transport of ions from one electrode to the other, since the ions to be removed do not have to pass the counter electrode. The arrangement of the tubular blow-out spaces AR not only has the advantage that it allows the arc to be drawn apart to very great lengths and thus the full use of the mechanical effect of the compressed gas jet on the arc, but it also allows the most favorable dimensioning of the flow cross-sections for the Pressurized gas. Both electrodes are blown evenly. At the foot points, it is impossible to wander to areas that are not properly flushed by the pressurized gas.

   The arrangement according to the invention also has the advantage that only relatively very low electrical field strengths prevail inside the two tubular blow-out spaces AR, since the electrical field is mainly formed between the adjacent boundary surfaces of the two contacts. But if the arc root points are located on the inner cylinder surfaces AR, and according to the above, they can be brought there without difficulty, then the mobile charge carriers arise, i.e. in areas of low field strength, can therefore only be subject to minor electrical influences, experience low accelerations, so that they can can be blown away by the compressed gas.

   For the same reason, the arc only offers a low resistance to a migration of its base points within the blow-out spaces AR, the arc is softened, so to speak, whereby the rapid migration of the base points within the blow-out spaces AR makes sufficient heating of the respective base point to the emission temperature so difficult that reignition already omitted after the first half-wave.

     As the drawing shows, the contacts are expediently designed in such a way that the surfaces of the contacts facing one another are convex surfaces of rotation (mushroom-shaped) apart from the contact surfaces of the same. In a special case, they are designed to be mirror images. The mushroom-shaped design aims to create conditions such that the flow of the extinguishing agent occurs as casually as possible, avoiding damaging congestion, vortex formation and dead spots from which an arc root would not be blown out.

   With the compressed gas switch according to the invention, it is possible to use the symmetrically arranged, tubular contacts themselves to initiate the opening movement due to the pressure of the extinguishing agent when the switch is switched off due to their piston-shaped design. In the drawing, annular pistons jE 'are attached to the tubular contact parts outside the arc area. With this switch-off by the pressure of the extinguishing agent, the contacts are held in the switch-on position by springs or latches, so that the switch-off only takes place when these locks are opened or the necessary
Gas pressure in the switching chamber is reached.

   It is desirable to achieve the highest possible outflow velocity for the solvent, because this ensures that the arc is broken up in the shortest possible time. For this reason, the mode of operation of the known Laval nozzle should also be used for the arrangement according to the invention. With the Laval nozzle, the initial narrowing and subsequent expansion of the flow cross-section, whereby the cross-section when entering the nozzle, the narrowest cross-section and the type of cross-sectional increase behind the narrowest cross-section correspond to certain conditions, achieve an extraordinarily high flow velocity.

   This known effect of the Laval nozzle is achieved in the contact arrangement described in that the facing convex surfaces force a cross-sectional narrowing of the gas flow, which is completed by the conical widening of the tubular blow-out spaces AR (not shown).

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The generating line of the surfaces of rotation of the contacts can be composed of straight lines (as shown) or consist of curves, whereby kinks and discontinuities in the curvature are expediently avoided, so that the flow of the extinguishing agent is as relaxed as possible while avoiding damaging congestion, vortex formations and dead, non-inflated ones Zones can be done.
