Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
EMI1.1

EMI1.1
A welding agent for aluminum has already been proposed which, when welded, produces a slight flow of metal with a clean, smooth surface. In addition to borax and boric acid, this welding agent contains an excess of free alkali; This welding agent preferably consists of a mixture of equal parts borax, boric acid and caustic potash. This agent can be used both in the dry state and in an aqueous solution.
When welding thin sheets with this welding agent, it has now been shown that an intimate connection of the parts to be welded can only be achieved by continuous stirring in the welding point, since this is the only way to break up and remove the disruptive oxide layer. These oxides and impurities which interfere with welding can now be eliminated and eliminated according to the invention, in particular when welding thin sheets, by adding sodium chloride, ammonium chloride and alkali sulfate to the above welding agent.
Example: To 100 g of a mixture consisting of 10 g borax, 10 g boric acid and 10 g caustic potash,
EMI1.2
added.
When welding with the improved welding agent, the flow of the metal is increased so that the liquid metal not only prevents the formation of oxide within the weld spot, but also pushes the surface oxide layer that forms to the side. A flawless, shiny silver weld seam can therefore be formed with this welding agent without stirring in the welding point, so that with this agent the welding of aluminum and its alloys, which has been very difficult to this day, can be carried out in a simple and inexpensive manner, even with very thin sheets.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Welding agent for aluminum, characterized by a mixture of approximately equal parts borax, boric acid and caustic potash, which also contains sodium chloride, ammonium chloride and alkali sulfate.
