Preservatives for adhesives, wood, plants and seeds.
The present invention relates to a preservative for adhesives, wood, plants and seeds. It is known that these substances are subject to such. B. Starch paste. Solutions of gum arabic etc .. but also damp wood, plants and vegetable products of all kinds. The action of microorganisms such as bacteria. Molds, etc .. which cause them to decompose.
To avoid the above-mentioned inconvenience, these substances have so far been treated with phenol or its substitution products, such as cresols, thymol, chlorophenols or inorganic metal poisons, e.g. B.
Mercury compounds, added. Almost all such agents have the disadvantage that they either have a strong smell or are harmful to higher living beings.
It has now been found that oxy-di- or oxytriarylmethane compounds which contain one or more monovalent halophenol radicals. are eminently suitable. to serve as a preservative and to protect the substances mentioned from decomposition; at the same time, they have the advantage of being odorless and harmless to humans in the required quantities.
Example 1: Starch paste is made with a weakly alkaline solution of the condensation product, which is obtained from formaldehyde with 2 moles of p-chlorophenol in the presence of sulfuric acid,
EMI1.1
Free of mold and bacteria, while untreated paste will spoil after a short time.
Just like the agent mentioned, z. B. the condensation products of formaldehyde and 2 mol. M-chlorophenol, 6-chloro-3-cresol, 6-chloro-2-cresol, also the condensation products of p-chlorobenzaldehyde or p-diethylaminobenzaldehyde + 2 mol. P-chlorophenol, furthermore the product obtained by tetrabromination of the condensation product from cyclohexanone and 2 mol. phenol, furthermore the condensation products from p-chlorobenzyl chloride and 1 mol. p-chlorophenol or from 2,6-dimethylol-4-chlorophenol and 2 mol. p-chlorophenol.
Example 2: Seed wheat, in which it was feared that stone fire might occur, is shaken with a mixture of 12% of the condensation product mentioned in Example 1 and 88% talc.
The grain obtained from the seeds treated in this way proved to be free from stone fire when it was harvested.
Other seeds or plants can also be treated with these substances in dry form or in solution to combat pests of plants. Likewise, the development of mold stains and similar damage to leather, wallpaper, etc. is prevented by pretreatment with the bodies mentioned.
The substances are also extremely well suited for impregnating and painting wood to prevent and combat infection with wood-destroying fungi, etc.
