EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

EMI1.1
The main aspect of the invention is that by using the various raw materials and reducing agents in certain proportions, products of the desired composition and purity are achieved without the need for further refining or purification processes.
The procedure is carried out in two stages. In the first stage, a chromium alloy with a high chromium content is produced and this alloy is then brought to a corresponding iron or steel bath in the second stage in a known manner, with a special protective cover being added for the metal bath when the second stage is carried out according to the invention.
For the production of the chromium alloy with a high chromium content in the first stage, see
EMI1.2
4% aluminum, 4% fluorspar, to ferrosilicon with 97% Si and
EMI1.3
This mixture is brought to a temperature of 1450-16000 C and results in an alloy with 0'25% carbon, 60% chromium, 39% iron, traces of silicon, sulfur and phosphorus.
This alloy is completely free from any impurities and can be used as such or according to the invention for the production of the stainless iron alloys without further refining.
An iron or steel bath of 850 kg with a carbon content of not more than 0.15% has now been prepared to carry out the second stage. The chromium alloy obtained in the first stage is then applied to this bath and at the same time a mixture is added as a protective layer to protect the iron bath from the influences of the electrodes and from oxidation by the oxygen in the environment and also to refine the iron bath itself consists of: 30% chromite, 25% lime,
20% bauxite,
EMI1.4
10% iron ore.
Since the chromium alloy with a high chromium content obtained in the first stage is a completely pure product and the iron bath is protected and cleaned by the enclosed protective cover, the resulting product is a completely refined chromium iron alloy that requires no further treatment. The final alloy has the following composition: about 0-14-0-16% carbon, 12-14% chromium and the remainder iron.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
When carrying out the second stage, it is of course also possible to proceed in such a way that the corresponding amount of molten iron or steel is applied to the chromium alloy of the first stage.
The process can be carried out in any electric furnace which is capable of keeping the material liquid during the entire process.
As can be seen from the composition of the mixture for producing the chromium alloy in the first stage, several reducing agents are known to be used to reduce the chromium oxide, u. betw. in a certain quantity ratio. By simultaneously using these known reducing agents in the specific intimate mixture, it is possible to immediately obtain a pure alloy ready for further processing. The various reducing agents cause a complete and even reduction of the chromium oxide.
Those in the second stage; The protective layer used must also have the exact composition mentioned in order to serve its purpose.
