Description

Schnitt durch die am Austrittsende des Hauptzylinders angeordnete Ventilvorrichtung ;

Fig. 5) zurückgezogen wird.

Fig. 5) miteinander in Berührung gehalten werden.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Device for hydraulic power transmission, in particular for hydraulic brakes of motor vehicles.

The invention relates to a hydraulic braking device, in particular for motor vehicles, but with regard to individual features of the invention is also suitable for other purposes.

In the case of hydraulic braking devices, it is extremely important that the brake lines, the wheel brake cylinders and the master cylinder are completely filled with a fluid or a non-compressible body in order to transfer the pressure exerted on the brake pedal to the brake shoes of the vehicle wheels without loss of pressure. With braking devices that have already been in operation for a long time, it now happens that the seals of the wheel brake cylinders have worn down to such an extent that they allow small amounts of air to seep through to the pistons of the wheel brake cylinders.

These amounts of air are usually so small that they do not interfere with the operation of the braking device, if it is designed in such a way that such amounts of air are automatically removed by the normal operation of the device.

If the brakes of a vehicle, u. Particularly in the hot season, the brake shoes, brake drums and wheel cylinders are heated to a relatively high temperature, and in extreme cases this temperature can reach such a level that the brake fluid in the wheel brake cylinders and in the adjacent ones Parts of the brake line evaporate. This evaporation of the brake fluid is undesirable because under certain circumstances the functioning of the brake device can be called into question as a result.

A main purpose of the invention is to provide a braking device in which air which has possibly penetrated into the device is discharged by itself; Furthermore, the cooling of the brake fluid should be facilitated. This is achieved through new arrangements for the wheel brake cylinders, cylinder pistons and lines.

According to the invention, two valves are provided at the outlet end of the master cylinder, one of which is used to prevent the fluid from flowing from the master cylinder into the brake lines and the other is used to prevent the fluid from flowing from the brake lines into the master cylinder, and it becomes the hydraulic line arranged in the form of a closed line, the wheel brake cylinders being connected to this line at certain intervals along this line.

It is already known in hydraulic braking devices, in particular for motor vehicles, to divide the hydraulic line into two branches which open into a common opening in the wheel brake cylinder. With this arrangement, however, only a more or less strong cooling of the working fluid in the vicinity of the wheel brake cylinder can be obtained.

The design of the braking device according to the invention, on the other hand, enables very effective cooling of the working fluid in that it circulates through the entire line, and creates an advantage that consists in this. that an effective flushing of the fluid lines is achieved, whereby all air bubbles possibly arising in the device are conducted into the master cylinder and can escape into the fluid container, so that an effective braking is always possible.

Other advantages emerge from the description below.

In the drawings, FIG. 1 shows a part of the vehicle frame of a motor vehicle with a braking device according to an embodiment of the invention attached to it in plan view,

5 shows a schematic representation of the embodiment of the brake according to FIG. 1, FIG. 6 shows a similar schematic
Illustration as in FIG. 5, but for a different embodiment of the invention, FIG. 7 a section through one of the wheel brake cylinders used in the embodiment according to FIG. 6, and FIG. 8 a
Section through a wheel brake cylinder of the same nature as the wheel brake cylinder according to FIG. 7, but for a different application of such a wheel brake cylinder.

The embodiment of the invention shown in FIGS. 1-5 of the drawing will first be described. Fig. 1 shows in dashed lines the vehicle frame and the running gear of a conventional motor vehicle. On this frame a master cylinder with a container 10 is arranged, which can be of any conventional design.

The master cylinder and reservoir assembly generally consists of a fluid reservoir containing a master cylinder 12 with a piston 13; this is driven by an arm 14 which is carried by an oscillating shaft 15 which protrudes outside the container and is connected to the conventional brake pedal 16 there. The arm 14 is releasably connected to the piston 13, and this is pulled back by a spring 77, whereas the brake pedal 16 is pulled back by a separate spring 16 a (see FIG. 5). In its retracted position, the piston 13 releases an opening through which a free connection between the cylinder 12 and the interior of the container 11 is established.

The rear end of the container 11 is provided with an extension 18, and a bolt 19 which has a T-shaped bore 20 is screwed into this.

A valve holder 21 is inserted between the shoulder 18 and the head of the bolt 19. The holder 21 has a valve chamber 22 with a valve 2, 3, which usually interrupts the connection between the chamber 22 and the T-shaped line 20 of the bolt 19. The T-shaped line 20 is in open connection with the outlet end of the master cylinder 12 through the channel 24.

When the driver of the vehicle applies the brakes, the valve 23 is lifted from its seat by the fluid emerging from the master cylinder against the tension of the valve spring 26, and the fluid flowing through the valve flows through the tubular extension 27 and from here into the Line 28, which in the present exemplary embodiment is arranged along the left side member of the vehicle frame and leads to a T-piece 29 seated approximately above the rear wheel axle of the vehicle.

A flexible hose 3C leads from the side outlet of the T-piece 29 to the inlet nipple of the wheel brake cylinder 32. This wheel brake cylinder is shown most clearly in FIGS. 2 and 3 and consists of a cast piece 34 with lugs 35, which are used to accommodate bolts 36 Internal threads are provided, through which bolts the wheel brake cylinder is fastened to the usual holding shell 37.

The casting 34 has a cylindrical bore. 38 which is connected to the nipple 31 by a channel 39.

The cylinder bore is connected by a second channel 40 to an air screw 41, which can be of any conventional type, but in the present embodiment consists of a tubular sleeve 42 screwed into the casting 34 and a valve body 43 which has an inner pointed end through which the channel 40 is closed.

If air is now to be let out of the wheel brake cylinder, the valve body 43 is unscrewed sufficiently far that the pointed end of the same no longer closes the channel 40, whereupon the air flows through this channel 40 into the transverse openings 44 in the valve body 43 and from here into a longitudinal channel of the valve body 43 communicating with the outside air can pass.

If the pistons arranged in the wheel brake cylinder 32 can also be of any conventional type, pistons of the type shown at 45 in FIG. 2 are preferably used. Such pistons have flat surfaces which are usually held in contact with one another by retraction springs 46 (see FIG. 5). The flat surfaces of the pistons 45 end in inclined surfaces 47 which form an annular groove for distributing pressurized liquid which is fed to the channel 39.

It should be noted that the abutting surfaces of the pistons are not so precisely machined,
 EMI2.1
so that when liquid under pressure acts, the pressure of the liquid acts on the entire surfaces of the pistons 45.

Each piston 45 is provided with an annular recess 48 in which a rubber ring 49 of U-shaped cross-section is inserted. Each piston 45 is further provided with a tapered recess 50 for receiving a piston rod 51, the other end of which is adjustably connected to a sleeve 52 which itself is in contact with a brake shoe 5.3.

A toothed wheel 54 with a coarse toothing is connected to the piston rod 51 and the holding shell 37 is provided with an opening 55 provided at a suitable location through which the end of a screwdriver can be inserted to act on the toothed wheel 54 and thereby the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

Adjust the length of the piston rod to accommodate changes in the thickness of the brake pad 56. The ends of the cylinder 32 are closed by rubber boots 57 in order to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture.

The rear outlet of the T-piece 29 is connected to a line 58 which is arranged along the side member of the vehicle frame to the next cross member and from here along the latter and leads to the other side member, where said line with a second T-piece 59 is connected.

The T-piece 59 is connected to a second wheel brake cylinder 32 a by a flexible hose 60, which can have the same design as the wheel brake cylinder 32 already described. A line 61 connects the T-piece 59 with the T-piece 62, which is itself connected by a flexible hose 63 to a third wheel brake cylinder 32b.

The T-piece 62 is preferably arranged approximately at the point where a cross member connects the longitudinal members of the vehicle frame to one another. A line 64 is arranged along this cross member and connects the T-piece 62 with a further T-piece 65, which is itself connected by a flexible hose 66 to a fourth wheel brake cylinder 32c. The wheel brake cylinders 32 b and 32 c can also be similar to the wheel brake cylinder 30 described first.

The T-piece 65 is connected to the tubular nipple 68 (Fig. 4) by a line 67,

for the valve 69, which is pressed against this seat by a spring 70.

Under certain circumstances, it may be worthwhile to keep the annular grooves 48 of the pistons 45 connected to the main line, and for this purpose the pistons in the present exemplary embodiment are provided with channels 47 a. In some cases such channels are either unnecessary or undesirable and can be omitted.
 EMI3.2
a complete cycle. The liquid emerging from the main cylinder is pressed through the valve 23 into the line 28, from which it flows in the direction of the arrows after the T-piece 29.

The shut-off valve 69 prevents any part of the liquid emerging from the master cylinder from entering the line 67.

When the pistons of the wheel brake cylinders are retracted into the normal position by the return springs 46, the fluid returned by the wheel brake cylinders into these lines tends to flow in the direction of the arrows, being pushed through the shut-off valve 69 and returned to the master cylinder . The liquid thus tries to move in the circuit and the same liquid is not pressed several times in succession into the wheel brake cylinder.

The pistons 45 are designed in such a way that, when they can be seen in the normal from FIG. 2
Position are located, the amount of liquid remaining in the cylinder is very small, so that during the retraction stroke of the piston 45 practically all of the liquid that is in the when the brakes are applied
Cylinder was contained, is pressed from the same.

It should also be noted that the flexible
Hose lines, through which the wheel brake cylinders are connected to the line arrangement on the vehicle frame, have an inner diameter of only 3 mm, so that the amount of fluid contained in each hose is small compared to the amount of fluid contained in the associated wheel brake cylinder, whereby the amount of fluid contained in a flexible hose Each time the brakes are applied, the amount of fluid contained is pressed several times in succession into the associated wheel brake cylinder and expelled from it, which causes a complete change in the fluid contained in the hose.

As already mentioned, the brake shoes, the brake drum, the wheel brake cylinders and the parts connected to them become hot when the brakes are used for a long period of time, whereby the heat generated in this way is transferred to the fluid contained in the wheel brake cylinders, which sometimes causes the temperature to rise this liquid rises so high that one of its components evaporates. When the brakes are released, practically all of this hot liquid is pressed out of the wheel brake cylinders into and through the lines 58, 61, 64 and 67, which are suitably made of copper, thereby rapidly cooling the liquid flowing through them.

The fluid expelled from a wheel brake cylinder does not return to this wheel brake cylinder the next time the brakes are applied, but moves to the next following wheel brake cylinder in the circuit, but before the fluid expelled from a wheel brake cylinder can reach the next wheel brake cylinder, it has to cool a considerable length of a relatively long Copper line flow through, and during this transition from one wheel brake cylinder to the next, the liquid assumes a temperature which is significantly lower than the temperature which the liquid had immediately after it was expelled from the next preceding wheel brake cylinder in the circuit.

The closed line circuit on the vehicle frame is usually arranged above the wheel brake cylinders, so that the flexible hoses from the wheel brake cylinders according to the aforementioned

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

Lead the lines in the direction from bottom to top. As a result, air that has entered a wheel brake cylinder, for example, can pull up through the flexible hose and enter the copper lines attached to the vehicle frame. The next time the brakes are applied, these small amounts of air are transported in the circuit until they possibly reach the master cylinder, from which they get into the container and from here escape to the outside. In this way the air is quickly removed by itself from the entire device, which in this way retains its highest efficiency.

This automatic evacuation of the air is also facilitated by the special design of the wheel brake cylinder, by means of which practically all of the liquid with any air bubbles that may collect therein is expelled from the wheel brake cylinder during the retraction stroke of the wheel brake cylinder piston.

6 and 7 show another embodiment of the invention, which mainly relates to the arrangement of the lines and the design of the wheel brake cylinder casting. In this embodiment of the invention, the same master cylinder and container arrangement 10, the same brake pedal 16, the same return spring 16a, the same actuating linkage, the same valve body 21 and therein the same arrangement of inlet and outlet valves as in the previous embodiment can be used.

The main cylinder opens into a line 80, which expediently consists of a copper tube which is fastened to the vehicle frame and runs along a longitudinal beam of the same to a point near the rear wheels. By means of a flexible hose 81, the line 80 is connected to the
 EMI4.1

The pistons, piston rods and associated devices can be identical to those of the device of FIG. The outlet opening 87 is provided with a nipple 88; this is connected to a copper line 89 which extends along the rear wheel axle housing and is connected to the lower nipple of the wheel brake cylinder 90.

The upper nipple of the wheel brake cylinder 90, the
Wheel brake cylinder 83 corresponds, is connected to a flexible hose 91, which leads to the adjacent end of a copper line 92 attached along one of the longitudinal members of the vehicle frame.

The front end of the line 92 is connected to a flexible hose 93 which leads to the lower nipple of a wheel brake cylinder 94 attached to the right front wheel. The line 95 is arranged along the front axle of the vehicle and connects the upper nipple of the brake cylinder 94 with the lower nipple of the wheel brake cylinder 96. The ends of the line 9 must be flexible to enable the front wheels to be steered. The flexible hose 97 connects the upper nipple of the wheel brake cylinder 96 with the copper pipe 98 which runs along one of the. The longitudinal beam of the vehicle frame is arranged and connected to the nipple 68 screwed into one end of the valve body 21 in the manner shown in FIG.

As can be seen most clearly from FIG. 7, the cast wheel brake cylinder is fastened to the holding shell 37 a by nuts 99 which are connected to inlet and outlet nipples 82 and 88, respectively. The lower nipple serves as an inlet nipple and the upper nipple as an outlet nipple, so that any air penetrating into the cylinder can be discharged through the outlet nipple under the influence of the retraction springs 46 during the retraction movement of the wheel brake cylinder piston.

The operation of this embodiment of the invention is generally similar to that of the previous embodiment. In the embodiment according to FIGS. 6 and 7, however, no fluid is pressed back into the wheel brake cylinder from which the fluid was expelled when the brakes were previously applied by a second application of the brakes, while in the embodiment according to FIGS. 1-5 the A small amount of fluid contained in each flexible piece of hose is pushed back into the wheel brake cylinder from which it has just been expelled.

8 shows a wheel brake cylinder 83 'which can be of the same type in every respect with the wheel brake cylinder 83. The wheel brake cylinder 83 'is shown here to be smaller than the cylinder 83, but it should be noted that the wheel brake cylinder 83', like the wheel brake cylinder 83, can be of any desired size. The wheel brake cylinder 8.3 'consists of a cast piece 84' with a cylindrical bore 8.5 'in which the pistons 45' are arranged, which pistons can be of the type shown in FIG. 2 or of any other desired type. The cylinder casting 84 'also has channels 86' and 87 'which, as shown in the drawing, are connected to the cylinder bore at the highest and lowest point, respectively.

In this figure, the wheel brake cylinder 83 'of a known type of braking device for vehicles is shown, a pressurized fluid being passed through a single line from the master cylinder to the wheel brake cylinder and from there back into the master cylinder. Provided in the channel 86 ′ is an enlargement 100 which is provided with an internal thread and into which a tubular nut 101 is screwed. A line 102, which leads to the master cylinder and is attached to this by a pressure coupling or any other suitable device

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

is the only means by which liquid can be forced into or expelled from the cylinder?

The tubular nut 101 has an inner pointed end which forms a liquid-tight seal with the shoulder formed at the junction of the extension of the line 86 'with the narrower part thereof. The channel 87 'similarly has an enlarged internally threaded part 103 which is the same size as the internally threaded part 100 of the channel 86'. This channel is shown here closed by a propeller 104 which has a fully pointed inner end which, with the shoulder, brings about the closure between the widened and narrower part of the channel 87 ′.

By slightly unscrewing the propeller 104, the pointed end of the propeller is removed somewhat from the shoulder of the channel 87 ′, as a result of which air or liquid can escape through the transverse bore 105 and the bore 106.

A great practical advantage of the wheel brake cylinder shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 is that the channels 86, 87, 86 'and 87' are arranged equal to one another and symmetrically with respect to the horizontal plane passing through the center line of the cylindrical bore. It is thereby achieved that if such a wheel brake cylinder is used in one of the devices according to FIGS. 5 and 6, any one of the channels can be arranged at the top and a uniform cylinder design can be used for all wheels of the vehicle. Likewise, when using such a cylinder in a device according to FIG. 1, it does not matter which cylinder side is on top, and either the channel 86 'or the channel 87' can be arranged as the upper channel and connected to the propeller.

In this way it is possible to use a single cylinder for all types of equipment, instead of providing two or more cylinder designs for use in certain types of equipment, as was previously necessary.

This feature of the wheel brake cylinder according to FIGS. 7 and 8 is also particularly valuable when the wheel brake cylinders have two different diameters, because by arranging the channels in the manner shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, the need is avoided, wheel brake cylinders for the right and to be provided for the left side.
