Device for controlling the luminous flux of a constant light source for television purposes and
Optical sound recording.
The invention relates to a device for controlling the luminous flux of a constant light source for television purposes and light tone recording. The known control device with Kerr cell with nitrobenzene, which has been used as an effective frequency-independent means for such purposes, has a number of disadvantages, which are based in particular on the fact that this liquid has a relatively insecure insulation resistance and also requires very high control voltages. In order to achieve useful fluctuations in brightness, the available control range must be used up to the vicinity of the breakdown voltage.
This necessity forms a constant source of danger for the safe and sustainable functioning of the light control device and therefore requires constant monitoring of the facility.
Furthermore, solid crystals which serve as light-controlling bodies have been used which have a field-proportional direct electro-optical birefringence. It is known that there are isotropic and anisotropic crystals with regard to optical properties. In the former the speed of propagation of light is equally great in all directions of passage. It can also be influenced by electrical influences only when using extremely high voltages. These
The group is therefore excluded for rental tax purposes as well as the amorphous bodies. The anisotropic
As a result of the different speeds of propagation in different directions of passage, crystals can have both natural and electrically induced birefringence.
In the substances used for crystallographic investigations, the electro-optical effect is only shown to a very small extent. This effect does not occur with the quartz and calcite crystals, which are almost exclusively used for practical purposes. It is true that birefringence can be achieved by mechanical deformation. This indirectly caused effect is ruled out for television purposes because of its frequency dependence.
The light control cell according to the invention consists of a crystal made of natural zinc blende, which is arranged between two plate electrodes. Zincblende is transparent and electrically insulating in the visible spectral range. Their mode of operation is based on the direct electrical birefringence, which is inertia-free and frequency-dependent. These properties make the proposed cell particularly suitable for television and optical sound recording purposes. Another advantage of the crystal cell with zinc blende is the fact that very low voltages are sufficient to control it compared to other cells.
The rest of the device of the light control device corresponds to the known Kerr cell device, so that a more detailed description of the parts required to complete the crystal cell device is superfluous.
