Preparations for soldering, welding or metallizing metals.

In the case of soldering, the solder has hitherto generally been supplied to the soldering point in a metallic state and has been melted there. The solder generally consists of a different metal or alloy than the surfaces to be joined by soldering. Similar conditions generally apply to welding. When metal objects are metallized, the coating metal is applied as a metallic melt either by spraying or dipping. What these methods have in common is that the soldering, welding or coating metal is supplied in a metallic state.

When using the agent according to the invention, the soldering, welding or coating metal is not supplied in a metallic state, but in the form of chemical compounds, such as salts or oxides, from which compounds the metal is only in and through contact with the to be soldered, metal to be welded or metallized is deposited. These chemical compounds should react with the base metal in such a way that the metallic components are released in the molten state, which can be achieved by supplying heat or wholly or partially by the reaction heat released during the reaction.

The conversion results in a fresh surface on the base metal on which a slight and complete union with the melt of solder, weld or coating metals formed by conversion takes place. The chemical compound from which metal is to be freed is supplied in a mixture with one or more other substances.

Various flow salts can be used to lower the melting point of the molten salt or to detach metal oxides from the surfaces that are to be soldered, welded or metallized, or to dissolve oxides or salts formed during the reaction.

According to the invention, the means for soldering, welding or metallizing consists of a mixture of a compound of a metal, which can be freed by reaction with another metal, with a flux containing an alkaline earth metal halide and optionally an alkali metal halide, at least one component of the mixture being a fluoride have to be. The metal to be made free can, for. B. cadmium and (or) zinc and is introduced in the form of a salt, advantageously the chloride. For the other components come z. B. the chlorides of potassium, sodium and calcium and calcium fluoride into consideration.

When soldering aluminum, the practical procedure is to apply a flux consisting of KC1 + NaCl + Cacas + CaF2 mixed with cadmium chloride to the points to be soldered, whereupon these points are pressed against each other while being heated. After the flux has melted, the cadmium chloride reacts with aluminum and the resulting molten cadmium metal acts as a solder. The aluminum chloride formed during the reaction in turn reacts with the flux. Instead of cadmium chloride, other metal chlorides or oxides or mixtures of those which react with the aluminum can also be used.

If zinc chloride is used in addition to cadmium chloride, it has proven advantageous to choose the starting mixture so that it contains 12 parts by weight of cadmium chloride and 47 parts by weight of zinc chloride and 15 to 30 parts by weight of a flux, e.g. B. calcium fluoride contains. This means that cadmium and zinc are released in a ratio of about 1: 3 during the reaction.

For tinning iron, the iron surface, which is well cleaned in the usual way, is melted with a melt
