 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  Exhalation valve for gas masks.

Exhalation valves for gas masks are already known which consist of two sheets of rubber connected on the edge with an interruption, one rubber sheet being connected to a short rubber hose serving as a valve seat, while the other rubber sheet is sucked into the valve seat when inhaled and therefore serves as the actual valve. The sealability of such valves is not sufficient, since the one necessarily made quite thick and attached to the second
Rubber sheet bound by an edge connection and serving as a valve rubber sheet cannot adapt exactly to the valve seat.

This deficiency is to be remedied by the invention in that a thin rubber membrane serving as a valve is loosely inserted between the two rubber plates. This loosely inserted
Since it is not bound to any other component of the valve and because it is protected by the two outer rubber plates, the rubber membrane can also be made thin; it is sucked into the valve seat when inhaled and thus seals.

It is difficult to discard the rubber membrane, because when you exhale the membrane is pressed against the inner wall of one rubber plate and lifted off the valve seat with it. When inhaling, the rubber plate with the rubber membrane adhering to it approaches the valve seat, whereby the membrane can then adapt itself precisely to the valve seat after sitting on, regardless of the rubber plate. The rubber plate serves to a certain extent only as a regulator for the membrane.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the valve has edge cutouts (preferably semicircular) of the two rubber plates, which, since they are not glued together at the points of the edge cutouts, provide a sufficient exit cross section for the exhaled air without overcoming its elasticity, whereby the exhalation resistance is significant is reduced.

In Fig. 1, the arrangement of the valve and the exhalation chamber is shown schematically.

Fig. 2 shows schematically the exhalation valve in size corresponding to the actual embodiment in plan view and Fig. 3 in section.

As can be seen from FIG. 3, the valve consists of two circular leaves e-e 'glued together with interruptions on the edge at h (FIG. 2). Between two side-by-side glued together edge parts of these sheets are to achieve an increase in the free
Cross-section for the exhaled air is preferably provided semicircular cutouts. A rubber membrane g serving as the actual valve is freely placed between the two leaves.

When inhaling, the membrane sits close to the seat formed by one end of the short rubber tube t, but when exhaling is pressed close to the inner side of the leaf e ', which enables the exhaled air to escape freely through the openings i.

The metal exhalation chamber b of the gas mask a can be provided with appropriately distributed openings (not shown) for the further escape of air either on its cylindrical outer surface or on its front face. A whistle d is provided in a corresponding place (in the exemplary illustration on the front face of the exhalation chamber). In the interior of the exhalation chamber a movable slide c is attached, which can be reached by a handle j in attached to it and emerging through a cutout located in the chamber

can bring the two abovementioned end positions. These end positions are determined by the length of the cutout selected accordingly.

In one end position, the openings on the exhalation chamber wall are blocked by the slide, so that the exhaled air can only escape through the whistle, which activates it. In the other edge position of the slide, the exhaled air escapes through the openings arranged on the slide and the exhalation chamber wall into the open.
