Abstract

Natural bast fibers made from hemp, flax, kenaf or nettle should be mixed with clay and / or cement and / or lime mixtures in a fineness and quantity that is sufficient to achieve equivalent or better durability, flexural strength, compressive strength and tensile strength than the same mixtures, with or without the addition of artificially produced fibers. The advantages lie in the ecological production of the raw materials (renewable raw materials) and in the price difference: natural fibers cost approx. 10 - 15 ÖS per kg, synthetic fibers cost approx. 110 - 150 ÖS per kg. The Austrian annual requirement is currently 10,000 t of synthetic fibers. Naturally grown hemp shives should be mixed into homogeneous or MDF boards in a fineness and quantity sufficient to achieve equivalent or better properties than those made from wood or flax shives. The advantages lie in the ecological production of the raw materials (renewable raw materials) and in the price difference: due to a significantly lower bulk density than wood, more volume per kg of hemp shives is achieved. This reduces the raw material price per m3 volume compared to homogeneous or MDF boards manufactured using conventional methods.
