Künstlieh gekühlte Hochdruekquecksilberdampiröhre.
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Artificially cooled high pressure mercury vapor tube.
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In this tube, the electrode 2 is used as the cathode and the electrode 3 is used as the anode.
The hot cathode 2, which is not heated by a special heating current, but rather by the discharge, can optionally be provided with strongly electron-emitting substances, such as alkaline earth oxide. The cathode and anode are partially surrounded by mercury 6 and protrude only a little, about 0.5 and 1.5 mm, respectively, from this.
The mutual distance between electrodes 2 and 3 is 12.5 mm. In the tube there is also argon under a pressure (at room temperature) of 50 mm of mercury.
The discharge tube described is surrounded by a cylindrical glass vessel f, which is closed at the ends by plugs 8 and 9 through which the power supply wires 10 and 11 are guided. These wires are surrounded by insulating tubes 12 and 13. A cooling liquid, most simply water, is passed through the vessel y, which flows along the tube 1 and effects intensive cooling of the discharge tube. The tube is connected to a direct current source via a resistor. B. 600 volts, the series resistor can be adjusted so that the current, after the discharge has reached its final state, is 2 amps.
The voltage between the electrodes is 500 volts, which corresponds to a mercury vapor pressure of approximately 100 atm. corresponds. The load on the tube is 800 watts per centimeter of length of the discharge path.
If the vessel 7 is made of a material that transmits ultraviolet rays, the tube can be used not only for emitting visible light but also ultraviolet rays.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Artificially cooled high-pressure mercury vapor tube with fixed electrodes, which protrude only slightly from a partially surrounding, consisting of mercury or amalgam, vaporizable amount of metal, characterized in that the cross section of the part of the anode protruding from this amount of metal is larger than the cross section of the amount of metal protruding part of the cathode.
