 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Ignition rod for repeated ignition and extinction.

The invention relates to an ignition rod for repeated ignition and extinguishing, with a combustible substance, mainly consisting of one or more organic substances and a separate ignition material, which generates an oxygen generator, e.g. B. potassium chlorate contains.

Such ignition rods are already protected by Austrian Patent No. 146374.

The object of the present invention is in particular to significantly reduce the ability of the ignition material to propagate combustion or even to prevent it entirely, despite the presence of an amount of potassium chlorate or other oxygen generator required for ignition, so that the ignition material only flares up briefly and the combustible material ignited. According to the invention, this is achieved in that the ignition material separated from the fuel contains an incombustible, preferably inorganic, binding agent such as water glass, so that the ignition material cannot sustain continuous combustion.

The reason why a corresponding combustion rate of the ignition compound can be obtained with an ignition rod of the composition according to the invention is that the oxygen generators of the ignition compound do not have any combustible material in their immediate vicinity that can be oxidized by the released oxygen with the development of heat. As a result, even up to 70% potassium chlorate can be used in the primer without any difficulty in extinguishing. In cases where a more ash-free residue is desired, ammonium perchlorate can be used as an oxygen generator in the ignition mass of the potassium chlorate. Particularly suitable binders for the oxygen developers are alkali silicate, such as. B.

Water glass, but also other inorganic binders can be considered, e.g. B. cement or plaster. As an example of the composition of the ignition compound, 60-70 parts of potassium chlorate and 30-40 parts of a 30% water glass solution can be mentioned, which solution, as is known, is converted into silica under the influence of carbonic acid. Furthermore, such difficult to burn substances, such as artificial resins, such as. B. Bakelite, and cellulose derivatives such as cellite can be used. In such a case, the ignition compound can consist of 60 to 70 parts of potassium chlorate, 20-30 parts of Bakelite or cellite dissolved in acetone and the remainder of pulverized glass and possibly sulfur or other substances commonly used for ignition compounds.

Any fuels can be used to produce the combustible mass, but such organic substances are particularly suitable for this purpose. which have a low gasification temperature, such as metaldehyde and other aldehydes as well as hexamethylenetetramine and other amines. In this case, either a single such substance or a mixture or combination of two or more of them can be used. It is therefore advisable in certain cases to initially use a more easily ignitable substance in the ignition material than in the rest of the combustible material. Since, when using completely incombustible binders such as silica, the rod extinguishes itself after a certain period of time under certain conditions, this can, if desired, be achieved by adding an oxygen developer, e.g. B.

Ammonium perehlorate, which does not leave any ash residue, or a low-boiling organic substance can be prevented, which additives also facilitate the inflammation.

The ignition mass can either be arranged around or only along part of the surface of the combustible mass, or it can be designed as a strand and enclosed in the mass, either inside the mass, and the like. between appropriate in their middle or pressed into the outer surface of the rod.
