Description

Shaped bodies made of porous iron or steel and a method for producing hollow bodies from the same.

It is known to provide objects made of molten iron or steel with a hard and corrosion-resistant surface by heating in the absence of oxygen in the presence of volatile silicon compounds. With this process it becomes unpleasantly noticeable that the deposited silicon or ferrosilicon is very brittle and tends to flake off the metallic base body.

It has now been found that when siliconizing porous, pressed or sintered bodies made of iron or steel - in contrast to the dense bodies produced by melting - layers with a silicon content of about 13% silicon are formed, which are relatively elastic and bond with the porous base body excellently are.

Depending on the choice of conditions, the ferrosilicon layer can be kept porous or practically dense. The layer is in any case thicker than silicon-containing layers produced under the same conditions on dense bodies, which consist of iron or steel produced in a molten manner.
Since the ferrous silicon which forms on the surface is acid-resistant, it is possible to produce thin-walled hollow bodies made of iron-silicon alloys in a simple manner from the siliconized molded bodies obtained by the process according to the invention. For this purpose, iron powder is pressed and, if necessary, then sintered.

The porous molding is then siliconized and finally the practically silicon-free core is removed by treatment with acid after part of the silicon-containing surface has been removed.

In some cases it is advantageous to deposit metallic chromium after siliconizing the porous body or at the same time.
