   Österreichische PATENTSCHRIFT Nr. 19835.

     RUDOLF KOTTENBACH ! N TROPPAU.

   Austrian PATENT LETTER No. 19835.

     RUDOLF KOTTENBACH! N TROPPAU.

Apparatus for determining the acceleration due to gravity and for verifying the law of fall. A leaf spring f oscillating in the horizontal plane (Fig. 1 and 2) is used as a timer, which is provided with a corresponding mass m at the front end
 EMI1.1
Mass m ends. into a fork 9 with two prongs which are 7 mm apart and are sharply edged inwards. The falling body, a small steel ball of 6 n1 ho
 EMI1.2
a coil s (Fig. 2 and 3) through which the electric current flows. The spool can be moved by means of a suitable guide on a vertical stand S (FIGS. 2 and 3).

The electrical current which is supplied and diverted in the terminals Kl and K2 (FIG. 3) has to pass a current interruption device before it passes through the coil s. This consists of a fixed part a (Fig. 3) and a movable part b
 EMI1.3
rotatable part can be regulated so that it just touches the mass m attached to the leaf spring in the rest position.

(Obvious from Fig. 3, in which the leaf spring is omitted for the sake of clarity and only the alasse m is drawn in the rest position and in the two extreme elongations on the left and right: the current conduction e, which is omitted in Fig. 2, can also be switched off Fig. 3.) If the leaf spring is now lifted out of the rest position (to the left, Fig. 3) and then released, it opens the current when the rest position is passed, whereby the Toil, which can be rotated around point o b is completely turned over.

At this moment the falling body begins to move. If the distance between the coil and the fork 9 is such that the falling body reaches the level of the fork at exactly the same time when it returns to the rest position for the first time, it falls unhindered through the fork into container c (Fig. 2) that pinches and holds it in place. If the spool is not in exactly the right position, the falling body comes either too early or too late and is accordingly thrown away by the left or right fork prong. In this way one is able to precisely determine the height which the body drops in the time of half an oscillation of the spring.

The period of oscillation of the spring can also be determined precisely by means of the hour clock by observing the time required for 100 oscillations; Thus, two related fall data (distance and time) are known from which the gravitational acceleration can be calculated. In order to prove the law of fall, the falling body is given in sequence such heights that it is at the first, second, third, etc. s. w. Return of the leaf spring to the rest position, the fork happens; these heights behave like 1: 4: 9 and s. w.

EMI2.1 PATENT CLAIM: Apparatus for determining the acceleration due to gravity and for demonstrating the laws of fall using a vibrating body (leaf spring, pendulum) as a timer, characterized in that the falling body is triggered by the vibrating Body (m) happens in such a way that the latter on the first pass through the rest position <Desc / Clms Page number 2> opens a contact and thereby interrupts the current used to hold the falling body and that the end of the folding movement is brought into precise correspondence with the second, third, fourth passage of the vibrating body through the rest position, the falling body passing unhindered through a fork attached to the vibrating body .
