<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Electric ignition and safety device
The invention relates to an electrical ignition and safety device for burners with gaseous or liquid fuels, in which a heat sensor controls a closing element of the fuel line under the action of the heat of combustion.
The invention is based on such a device in which a contact carrier is supported against the heat sensor. At the free end of the contact carrier, a contact bolt guided movably against an inhibiting force is provided between two mating contacts, one of which is connected to the circuit for the terminating element of the fuel line.
EMI1.1
With this device, the pilot flame has to be lit anew each time in some way. This is a particularly big disadvantage because the pilot valve opens by itself whenever the room thermostat responds due to the room temperature being too low. In this known device, gas constantly flows out, which can cause an explosion if it is not ignited in time.
An ignition device has also become known which is switched on by a push button together with the fuel valve and automatically switched off again by a heating wire with a heat sensor connected in parallel or in series with the ignition coil. The disadvantage here is that after a certain aging of the individual parts of the system, the heat sensor switches off the ignition prematurely, namely before the pilot flame burns. Such an incorrect switching is a major disadvantage.
Finally, safety devices for systems have also become known in which, in addition to the main flame, a pilot flame is supposed to burn constantly in order to reignite it when the main flame is extinguished. In order to prevent gas from continuing to flow out of the main gas line when the pilot flame goes out, even if the main flame should also go out, a device with a heat sensor dependent on the pilot flame has become known which, when the pilot flame goes out, first switches off the entire fuel supply and then switches the entire system on again.
Such devices are disadvantageous because normally when the pilot flame goes out - although the main flame is still burning - the entire system is switched off, the pilot flame is first re-lit and then the main flame is also re-lit via the pilot flame. which is time-consuming and, due to the large number of necessary switching operations, again harbors uncertainty. In addition, it is the point of a main flame to burn safely as long as possible, so that if the pilot flame is finally extinguished, it is very disadvantageous to switch off the main flame only because the pilot flame is defective, although it could continue to burn as long as the fuel supply lasts. This known system therefore also has disadvantages which make it appear unusable as an ignition and safety device.
In addition, ignition devices have also been proposed in which essential parts of the ignition device, for. B. overflow pipes are switched on and off by hand or have to be brought into the operating position and then must be removed again by hand from the operating position. Such systems are useless because a good safety device must work automatically and must not depend on whether a certain operation is carried out by hand
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
has been or not. Even those ignition and safety devices in which a thermo-pneumatic heat sensor is provided are unusable because they do not respond quickly enough when the system cools down.
Such devices have the significant disadvantage that the pipelines with the temperature-dependent expanding or contracting gas heat themselves and then, when the system cools down, delay the switching time due to heat dissipation to the gas used for switching, so that not only one spontaneous shift, but even a delayed shift is achieved. The same disadvantage are those devices in which a fixed heat sensor acts on the resilient end of an electrical contact lever protruding beyond the actual contact, because when the heat sensor cools, a considerable spring travel must first be traversed before the electrical contact switches.
The disadvantages of the known devices are avoided by the invention. The invention has set itself the task of creating an electrical ignition and safety device which, when the combustion heat acting on the sensor is extinguished, closes the fuel line even when the heat sensor has cooled down very slightly and, if necessary, immediately starts the ignition device so that the burner is restarted the fuel supply re-ignites immediately,
The invention consists in that the other mating contact is connected to the circuit of the ignition device and both mating contacts are arranged at such a distance from one another that the contact pin touches both mating contacts approximately in its middle position,
while in one end position when the heat sensor is cold it rests solely on the ignition contact and in the other end position when the heat sensor is strongly heated it rests solely on the mating contact of the closing element.
In the ignition and safety device according to the invention, the first contact controls the ignition device and the second contact controls the gas valve either of an ignition flame or directly and then with the omission of a special ignition flame, the main gas valve. This disconnection occurs with overlapping of the contact sequence, which causes contact to be established after the thermostat has cooled down very slightly.
In the known devices, for a short-term interruption of the fuel supply z. B. in the event of a line fault, the fuel valve remains open and the ignition switched off until the heat sensor has cooled down. If, in the meantime, the fuel supply was restarted, the gas would flow out without being ignited. If the ignition was then switched on after the thermostat had cooled down, there would be an explosion.
According to the invention, the cold heat sensor pushes the contact carrier into a new position, in which it closes the circuit for the ignition device via the first mating contact, while with increasing heating it first additionally opens the control element of the fuel line via the second mating contact and then opens the fuel line control element Heating interrupts the circuit of the ignition device, while the circuit for the control element of the fuel line remains closed. The invention therefore creates an ignition and safety device that operates absolutely explosion-proof.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the counter contacts are resiliently arranged between two stops. The spring force of the mating contacts is less than the frictional force acting on the contact bolt.
The device according to the invention works as follows:
When the heat sensor is cold, the contact bolt rests against one of the mating contacts and thereby closes a circuit that causes the ignition device to be switched on. When the temperature rises, the control element of the fuel line is also opened via the second mating contact. If the heating continues, the circuit of the ignition device is interrupted, but the circuit for the control element of the fuel line is kept closed. If, for whatever reason, the effect of the heat of combustion on the heat sensor ceases, the contact of the circuit for the control element of the fuel line is opened and the fuel supply is interrupted with only a small backward movement of the member carrying the contact pin.
At the same time, the circuit of the ignition device is closed again so that it causes the fuel to ignite immediately when the fuel supply is restarted.
Exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are shown in the drawing. 1 shows an ignition and safety device in which the electrical ignition device is controlled automatically, FIGS. 2a-2c show the three possible operating positions of the contact carrier of the device, FIG. 3 shows a longitudinal section through a structural embodiment of the actual ignition cartridge , FIG. 4 shows, in section along the line A - B in FIG. 3, an embodiment that is somewhat modified in the burner-side part of the cartridge, FIG. 5 shows the circuit diagram of a somewhat modified embodiment.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The main parts of the device shown in FIG. 1 are the burner 1, the ignition cartridge 2, the solenoid valve 3 and the switch box 4. An electrical ignition coil 5 is located in the area of the fuel outlet of the burner 1.
The heat sensor is, as will emerge later from the description of FIGS. 3 and 4, under the influence of the flame of the burner 1 and possibly the ignition coil 5. The heat sensor itself is not shown in FIG. 1; When it is heated, it causes the lever 6 to move with its contact 7 towards the mating contact 8. The other components of the entire device are described below in connection with their effect.
The terminals 9 and 10 of the switch box 4 are connected to an alternating current network with the usual voltage, ie approximately 220 V. The contact 7 attached to the lever 6 of the ignition cartridge 2 does not only work with a mating contact. 8 together, which controls the valve 29 of the fuel line 30, but
EMI3.1
ne 2 controls automatically.
The device works as follows: When the heat sensor is cold, the lever 6 and its contact 7 assume the position shown in FIG. 2a. When the switch 13 is closed, a current flows from the terminals 32 and 33 of the switch box 4 via the primary winding 34 of the transformer 35 housed in the box 3. The partial secondary winding 36 takes the current for the ignition coil 5 from the transformer 35, which this via the Terminals 37a and 38a and the corresponding terminals 37b, 38b and the two contacts 7 and 31 is supplied.
After a certain amount of heating, the contact 7 of the lever 6, as shown in FIG. 2b, also comes into contact with the contact 8 in the ignition cartridge 2, so that the rectifier 27 and thus the excitation winding 28 of the valve 29 via the partial secondary winding 39 and the connection terminal 40a, 41a, 40b and 41b receives voltage. The valve 29 opens, and
EMI3.2
by the flame of the burner 1, as FIG. 2c shows, the contacts 7 and 31 are separated and the power supply to the ignition coil 5 is interrupted. When the burner 1 goes out, the contact 7 returns to the position according to FIG. 2a after the heat sensor has cooled down slightly. The valve 29 is closed and the ignition coil 5 is made to glow.
Then, if the line 30 is charged with fuel, the burner 1 can reignite at the ignition coil 5, and the process described is repeated.
In the switch box 4, a resistor 42 is connected in parallel with the signal lamp 16. In the position of the ignition cartridge according to FIG. 2a, the lamp burns brightly, since the ignition current for the ignition coil 5 flows through it and the resistor 42. In the position according to FIG. 2c, only the weak current for the excitation winding 28 of the valve 29 flows through the switch box 4, the lamp 16 therefore burns only weakly when the device is in continuous operation and thus shows the opening of the valve 29 and the switching off of the ignition coil 5 at.
3 and 4, two structural embodiments of the ignition cartridge 2 are shown. The parts of the cartridge that are sensitive to dirt and corrosion are accommodated in a housing which consists of the cover 43 and the parts 44 and 45. A disk 47 made of insulating material is fastened to the cover 43 by means of the screw 46. A metal sleeve 48 is soldered to the cover 43. A cylindrical ceramic rod 49 is slidably mounted in this metal sleeve. This ceramic rod is supported with its end face 50 against a stop 51 of the sleeve 48, which in the example shown is created by curling. A heating wire 52, which is connected in series with the ignition coil 5, is wound around the ceramic rod 49. The ignition coil 5 is located in front of the end face O of the ceramic rod 49.
Together with the insulating disk 47 is through the screws 46 in the housing, u. A metal plate 54 is fastened between a slot 53 of the disk 47. This carries two arms 55, which are provided at their outer end with a blade bearing 56 for a lever-like bracket 57.
This bracket 57 is pivoted by the ceramic rod 49 with the interposition of a metallic pressure plate 58 and a ball 60 which can be displaced by an adjusting screw 59. It is also under the action of a return spring 61, the suspension arm 62 of which also extends from the metal plate 54.
At its other free end, the bracket 57 has an eye 63 in which a contact pin 64 is slidably mounted. The contact pin has a thickened head 65 as an end stop. A certain amount of friction is exerted on the bolt 64 by a resilient wire 66 fastened to the bracket 57, which is guided around the eye 63 and presses on the bolt 64 in an incision 67. The contact pin 64 works together with two mating contacts 68 and 69, each of which is attached to a resilient plate 70 and 71, respectively. The plate 70 is together with two angle plates 72 and 73, the

Sheet 71 together with an angle sheet 74 fastened by a screw 75 to a disk 76 made of insulating material.
A longitudinal groove 78 is provided in the disk 76 to accommodate the end of the screw 77 which connects the housing parts 44 and 4f: 1 to one another. The disk 76 is connected to the disk 47 by two spacer bolts 79 and 80. In Fig. 3 only the spacer bolt 79 is visible, in Fig. 4, however, both spacer bolts can be seen. In the disk 76 there are four metal threaded pieces 81, 82, 83 and 84. The two fastening screws 75 are screwed into the threaded pieces 81 and 82, and the spacer bolts 79 and 80 are screwed into the threaded pieces 83 and 84. All four threaded pieces have fastening screws 85 at their other end for the four power supply lines (terminals 37b. 38b, 40b and 41b in FIG. 1), which are led through the neck 86 into the housing of the ignition cartridge.
The two power supply lines of the heating wire 52 and the ignition coil 5 are conductively connected to the two spacer bolts 79 and 80. The bracket 57 is also conductively connected to the spacer bolt 79 via the suspension arm 62 and the return spring 61.
The two resilient plates 70 and 71, to which the mating contacts 68 and 69 are attached, are bent at right angles at their free ends and provided with slots 87 and 88, respectively, into which the free ends of the angle plates 72 and 74 protrude. The resilient plates 70 and 71 can therefore only move in a range which is determined by the height of the slots 87 and 88 and the thickness of the angle plates 72 and 73. The upper mating contact 68 is adjustable by means of an adjusting screw 89 which is screwed into the angle plate 73 and which can pivot the angle plate 72 with elastic deformation.
The section shown in Fig. 4 shows a somewhat different design of the burner-side device end. In this embodiment, the heating wire 90 is namely wound around the metal sleeve -18, which contains the ceramic rod 49 and a stop 51 for the same. The heating wire 90 therefore simultaneously serves as an ignition coil. The front part of the device is accommodated in an additional sheet metal housing part 91. The heating wire 90 is fastened in threaded metal pieces 93 and 94 by means of the screws 92. These threaded metal pieces are in turn screwed to the spacer bolts 79 and 80. The spacer bolts 79 and 80 are used in both cases, d. H. both with the heating wire arranged inside the metal sleeve 48 and outside the same as a power supply line for the heating wire and the ignition coil.
This design has the advantage that the ignition coil used for heating can easily be replaced.
The mode of operation of the device is as follows: The mating contact 68 is connected to the terminal designated 37b in FIG. 1. The mating contact 69 is connected to the terminal 40b.
The two spacer bolts 79 and 80 are connected to the stop clamps 38b and 41b, respectively. As long as the metal sleeve 48 is not heated, the device parts assume the position shown in FIG.
If the main switch 13 (FIG. 1) is now closed, the heating wire 52 and the ignition coil 5 or the heating wire 90 receive electricity and glow. The metal sleeve 48 is heated and expands. The ceramic rod 49 supported against the stop 51 of the metal sleeve 48 follows this movement because it is pressed to the left by the return spring 61 via the bracket 57. In this case, the right free end of the bracket 57 and thus the contact pin 64 moves downwards.
The resilient sheet metal 70 and the mating contact 68 initially follow this movement so that the heating wire and the ignition coil remain under tension. After a certain displacement, the contact pin 64 also touches the mating contact 69. This opens the valve 29 of the fuel line 30 and the burner 1 is ignited. The metal sleeve 48 is further heated by the burner flame, and the bracket 57 is pivoted further down with its right free end. The upper edge of the slot 87 rests on the angle plate 72 and the contact pin 64 comes out of contact with the mating contact 68. The heating wire 52 and the ignition coil 5 or the heating wire 90 are de-energized.
When the metal sleeve 48 is heated further, the resilient plate 71 is pressed down, since its spring force is less than the friction with which the contact pin 64 is held in the eye 63. As soon as the upper edge of the slot 88 rests against the angle plate 74, the bolt 64 is pushed into the eye 63 when the bracket 57 is pivoted further. The distance between the head 65 of the contact pin 64 and the upper mating contact 68 no longer changes.
When the flame acting on the metal sleeve 48 goes out, the free end of the bracket 57 moves upwards. After a slight pivoting path determined by the height of the slot 88 in the resilient plate 71, the contact between the contact pin 64 and the counter contact 69 is canceled, and the valve 29 in the fuel line 30 is closed. The contact pin 64 then comes into contact with the upper mating contact 68, as a result of which the ignition coil receives current.
The ignition coil remains under tension until burner 1 is re-ignited.

The temperature at which the valve 29 is opened can be set at the screw 59 of the bracket 57. The interposition of the ball 60 as well as the mounting of the bracket 57 on a cutting edge 56 have the effect that the bracket 57 moves almost smoothly.
The expansion of the metal sleeve 48 is thereby. that the cutting edge bearing 56 is in the immediate vicinity of the contact point of the bracket 57 on the heat sensor, strong. Transfer enlarged to the contact pin 64. The difference between the temperature at which the valve 29 is opened and the temperature at which the ignition current is interrupted can be set at the screw 89.
In the device shown in FIG. 5, a spark gap 95 which is controlled by a spark hammer 96 is used to ignite the stick or burner flame 1. Those parts of the device which are identical in structure and mode of operation to individual parts of the device shown in FIGS. 1-2 are provided with the same reference numerals in FIG. 5 as in FIGS. 1 and 2. From the mains connection terminal 9 of the switch box 4 leads on the one hand a line directly via the signal lamp 97 and the terminals 98 and 98b to the contact 7 of the ignition cartridge, on the other hand a line via the push button switch 14 coupled to the main switch 13, the resistor 42, the terminals 99, 99b to the contact 8 of the ignition cartridge 2 and to the connection terminal 99a of the excitation winding 28 of the solenoid valve 3.
A line leads from the other network connection terminal 10 via the main switch 13 and the connection terminal 100 to the connection terminal 100b of the ignition cartridge 2 and 100a of the solenoid valve 3.
The mode of operation of this device is as follows: When the push-button switch 14 and the main switch 13 are closed at the same time, the spark hammer 96 receives on the one hand via the main switch 13 and the connecting terminals 100, 100b, on the other hand via the signal lamps 97, the terminals 98, 98b and those closed when the heat sensor is cold Contacts 7.31 voltages.
At the same time, the excitation winding 28 of the solenoid valve 3 receives voltage via the terminals 100b, 100a on the one hand and via the fuse 42 and the terminals 99, 99b, 99a on the other hand. The valve 29 opens and the fuel flowing out ignites at the spark gap 95. When the heat sensor is heated by the burner flame, the contact 7 separates from the mating contact 31 and comes into contact with the mating contact 8. As a result, the spark hammer 96 is de-energized and the excitation winding 28 of the valve 29 receives voltage via the signal lamp 97, the terminals 98, 98b, the contacts 7 ... 8 and the terminals 99a, even if the switch 14 is now opened. The signal lamp 97 continues to burn.
If it does not do this after releasing the pushbutton switch 14, the process described has not yet ended and must be repeated.
The device described can either be used to ignite an ignition flame, which then sets the entire burner on fire, but it can also be used directly to ignite the entire burner without the aid of an ignition flame. In the former case, preheating of the heat sensor can be dispensed with. Instead of the frictional force used in the illustrated embodiment, against which the contact carrier is arranged displaceably between the mating contacts. is, can also be worked with liquid friction, with a magnetic field or with friction and a magnet, without departing from the principle of the invention.
