Process for the production of wood fiber boards that are difficult to ignite
The production of hard-to-ignite wood fiber boards has already been tried many times, but without satisfactory success; metal salts in combination with binders and, more recently, synthetic resins in combination with phosphates have been used for this purpose for a long time.
Obviously, it has also been proposed to add the chemicals in question to the suspension of the starting materials, but this requires an economically unacceptable large amount of chemicals; In addition, this method also causes disruptions in the manufacturing process.
Other known attempts are based on preparing the plates between pressing and drying by spraying on dissolved chemicals; This process did not produce any useful results either, because the fibers in the impregnated layer were destroyed during drying, which must be carried out in accordance with the rest of the production process at a relatively high temperature.
In contrast, in the process according to the invention, the wood fiber boards are coated with a coating of phosphates, preferably ammonium phosphates, urea, pentaerythritol and formaldehyde, which under the action of heat forms an insulating foam layer and ensures fire resistance that meets the strictest official regulations.
According to a further feature of the invention, this coating of phosphates should preferably contain mono- and di-phosphates in such a mixing ratio that the pH is in the range 4.5-5.5; the pH value is of particular importance for the usability of the paint and should be adjusted to about 5.
The phosphate and urea content of the paint can also vary within wide limits - however, a total proportion between 50 and 60 gel% is preferable.
In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the paint is applied to the already dried panels, u. between. Preferably immediately after drying.
The paint according to the invention is made up of the same basic components as the paints in the known impregnation processes, namely from ammonium phosphates and urea; However, by adding the other chemicals-pentaerytritol and formaldehyde-it is achieved that the coating can be applied successfully even after the panels have dried without disturbing the manufacturing process.
These latter constituents also give the paint film-forming capacity, stability, and adhesion to the substrate, and also promote foam formation.
These important effects of chemical additives are by no means limited to ammonium phosphate paints, but also occur in the same way in connection with other phosphates.
Kaolin is also added to the paint in order to ensure color stability.
The paint according to the invention is applied to the wood fiber boards by spraying immediately after they have finished drying; The temperature of the panels is so high that the paint dries in a relatively short time.
To meet the stringent fire resistance requirements mentioned, a paint quantity of approximately 400 g / m 2 is required.
