 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Process for the manufacture of packing boxes
The invention relates to a method for the production of stuffing box packings which contain organic, inorganic or synthetic fibers in the form of threads and lubricating solids.

   It has already been proposed to manufacture gland packings of this type in such a way that one can make of fibrous materials, e.g. B. asbestos, produces yarn and wound bobbins from this yarn, preferably in such a way that the yarn crossed each other in the individual turns of the bobbins, whereupon these bobbins with a binder, e.g. Natural or synthetic rubber, impregnated and then the solid lubricants, e.g. B. graphite applied.

   Likewise, it has already been proposed to produce sleeve-like gland packs from paper-like fibrous foils or fibrous nonwovens by winding, with also subsequently solid lubricants such. B. graphite, were applied to the surface, preferably after moistening with a binder.

   The graphitized sleeves are then compressed in a press tool in the shape of an accordion to form a smooth and solid gland packing. As a result of the previous graphitization, the entire surface is covered with a thin graphite layer.
 EMI1.1
 because the thin graphite layer adhering to the surface wears out quickly, so that the dry fiber then causes very high friction.

   Furthermore, stuffing box packings have become known which are braided from threads similar to rayon or wound fabrics made from threads of this type. The rayon threads were produced in such a way that colloidal graphite was distributed in the viscose solution or in a melt of the material to be spun, which was pressed out of the spinneret when the individual fibers were produced. The fibers and threads emerging from the spinneret into the precipitation bath or formed by the solidification of the spinning mass consisted of a homogeneous mixture of rayon and graphite finely distributed in each individual fiber.

   These graphite-containing fibers, as constituents of the stuffing box packings, only had an inadequate lubricating effect because the amount of graphite is too small, the graphite does not sit on the surface of the fibers and is not in the form of the finest flakes.

   Finally, for the production of stuffing box packings from fleece-like layers wound into rolls, it has already been proposed to introduce graphite or other solid lubricants into the spaces between the intertwined fibers forming the fleece.

   The impregnation of these known stuffing box packings, which were made from yarns and textile fabrics, knitted or woven from them, or from paper-like foils, did not result in satisfactory fatigue strength because the graphite is only on the surface and not inside the yarn threads or foils. In the case of packs wound from nonwovens, the graphite was only introduced into the spaces between the fibers used to form the nonwoven, without completely enveloping the fibers.

   The method according to the invention creates gland packings with a hitherto unachieved content of solid lubricants, in particular graphite, essentially by first applying the lubricating solids, preferably graphite, to the fibers used to produce the threads in a manner known per se. z. B. by dipping in a solution or dispersion containing these solids or by spraying z. B. applies a binding agent containing the solids, so that they cover every single fiber as possible on all sides, whereupon, as is known,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 makes threads from these individual fibers and the packings from these threads.

   The high content of solid lubricants gives the packs produced according to the invention a significantly longer service life. The packs also withstand significantly higher pressures and temperatures than packs that have been produced using the methods known up to now. In the process according to the invention you can use organic fibers such as cotton, wool, silk, rayon, fibers made of polytetrafluoroethylene, polyamide fibers and the like. Like. As well as of inorganic fibers, e.g. B. asbestos, glass fibers, quartz fibers, slag or rock wool, etc., go out.

   Graphite is primarily used as a lubricating component; however, other powdery additives with lubricating properties are also suitable, e.g. B. mica, talc, molybdenum disulfide and. Like., Also certain metal powder, z. B. lead, copper, tin, aluminum, zinc. One sets the lubricating solids, z. B. the graphite, during the processing of the individual fibers in such a way that the fibers are enveloped on all sides by the lubricating components before a yarn is produced. In practice, the graphite or other solid additives will be added to the fibrous materials on the card at the latest.

   The use of a binder is very useful here. B. can consist of organic or inorganic adhesives. Particularly suitable are natural and synthetic rubbers, such as polymers and mixed polymers of isobutylene, ethylene, styrene and their homologues; Polyvinyl calorides, polyvinyl ethers, polyvinyl acetates, polyvinyl alcohols, polyacrylonitriles, polyacrylic esters, polyacrylamides, polyurethanes, polycaprolactams, polymers of adipic acids and their derivatives, isocyanates, polyesters, terephthalic acid resins, halogenated plastics, especially fluorine hangings; Phenolic, cresol and other condensation resins, silicone resins and rubbers; animal, vegetable and synthetic glues; inorganic binders such as water glass u. like

   These binders can be in various forms; as liquids, melts, solutions, emulsions, latices and suspensions. In these forms, the agents are applied to the fibers together with a coagulant, e.g. B. an acid, an acidic reacting salt or a different electrolyte. In the case of rubber latex, no coagulants are generally required in the presence of asbestos.

   It is applied to the fibers by dipping the fibers in a solution or dispersion of a binder; the loose fibers are stirred or scattered in a dispersion or solution of the binder with the lubricating solid additive, the whole thing works well and then, by coagulation of the binder, this together with the lubricating additive is deposited on the fiber. The mass is then dried, frayed and spun in the usual way. Also by spreading or spraying such a liquid or solution on the dried fiber materials at the latest on the card with subsequent application of the solid lubricant or also by thawing
 EMI2.1
 With the finely distributed, lubricating solids, preliminary products are obtained for the manufacture of the yarns.

   The application of the solids follows either the coating of the individual fibers with the binders, or the solids and the binders are applied simultaneously. If the solids are applied after the binder, they can either be applied by dust or electrostatically.

   When the solid lubricant. Adhere sufficiently to the fibers, the addition of binders can also be dispensed with.

   Another way of producing such yarns is to make a pulp from the individual fibers and the solid, lubricating substances and preferably the binders in the manner of paper technology and to process this pulp into paper-like foils or fleeces, which are then cut into narrow strips, which are then grooved (similar to paper cords) so that they result in yarn-like threads that are further processed into packs.

   The further processing takes place either by producing bobbins, the individual thread layers of which cross each other, which gives the bobbins sufficient strength. Or you can produce woven, knitted or braided fabrics in the form of webs, the width of which corresponds approximately to the axial length of the desired packages, and these webs are wound up to form the desired packages.

   Instead of using the woven or knitted fabric, one can also proceed in such a way to wind up the packs that the threads either as such or after processing into wider strands around a core or lace and the braid is wound up so far that the pack is thick enough .

   Another possibility is to use a long thread of thread of the type described above.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 benen type wrapped around the metal core to be surrounded by the pack at the desired location and in this way creates the pack in place.

   The drawing explains some possible embodiments of the method according to the invention.

   1 and 2 show a package wound from individual layers of yarn in the form of a bobbin in section and in plan view, FIG. 3 shows a package produced by winding a woven or knitted fabric, FIG. 4 shows the braiding of a core with strands for production a package and FIG. 5 shows the winding of a single long thread on a shaft to create a package in place.

   In Fig. 1 and 2, the package 1 is wound up from several layers of yarn 2, the directions of the
Cross threads 3 and 4. In FIG. 3, the pack is produced by winding a woven or knitted band 6 onto a core 15 as a roll 5. According to FIG. 4, a thread 8 or somewhat widened strands are braided into a band and this is wound onto a core 15, so that a bobbin 7 is created. Fig. 5 shows the winding of a long thread 9 on a shaft 10, the diameter of which at i2. something. is greater than 13. 11 is the paragraph from which the winding of the thread begins and continues until the winding is approximately as high as section 12.

   While with the previously known methods a maximum of 30-40 vol. ¯5ta of the lubricating solid additives could be brought into the pack, according to the process according to the invention it is possible to put up to 80 vol, -0/0 and more of the pack in this way so that the lubricating solids are evenly distributed over the entire cross-section of the packing, so that the pack contains a large reserve of solid lubricating substances that cannot be easily washed or rubbed out. Many of these lubricants are in the form of flakes or platelets which, thanks to their characteristic crystallization lattice, result in particularly low coefficients of friction. Other accessories. z.

   B. lead, aluminum or copper powder, are usually so soft that they also very soon take on platelets in operation and then also have a positive effect on the friction.

   Chemical agents can also be added to the packs to improve the resistance to cold and hot media, such as boiler feed water, sea water, as well as acids, alkalis, salt solutions; also against inorganic and organic solvents and their mixtures, oils and gases. Silicones and fluorine-containing plastics in oil or rubber form are suitable as such agents. Generally one can do this. take all substances listed above as binders. You can either incorporate these agents into the fibers or the finished packs, u. in the form of solutions, melts, emulsions or suspensions. In the same way, fats can be added to the yarn or the packs, or the finished packs can be impregnated with them in a known manner.

    Example 1: Spun fibers, made from asbestos or other barrel raw materials are used in an amount of about 60% with 35% powder graphite and 5% natural rubber latex (calculated on anhydrous state) in the Hollander, i.e. H. with the addition of about 10-100 times, on average about 50 times the amount of water, the fibers are covered with graphite.

   To improve the adhesion of the graphite to the fibers, the latex can be coagulated by adding a trace of acid. The mixture is processed into paper-like foils on a long or cylinder sieve machine, which are then defibrated in a shredder after drying. These individual fibers, each of which is completely covered with graphite, are now processed into threads. They are first spun on the card to a roving, which is then spun on a spinning machine and twisted on the twisting machine. The threads obtained in this way, which contain graphite through and through, are processed into gland packs by braiding on a braiding or lace machine or by weaving or knitting and then assembling them.

   Example 2: 10 parts of cotton fibers are mixed with a suspension of 87 parts of graphite and enough of a 20% solution of acrylonitrile in dimethylformamide that the amount of dry acrylonitrile content corresponds to 3 parts by weight. For mixing, the suspension of the graphite and the acrylonitrile solution is added to the fibers while they move over heated surfaces. The solvent evaporates, and individual fibers completely encased in graphite are obtained, which are further processed using the textile technique described in Example 1. The volume ratio of (cotton fibers + binder): graphite is about 23:77.

   Example 3: Asbestos staple fibers are placed on a card or double card and, after leaving the tambour and pequener, the batt is treated with a graphite suspension of 95 parts by weight of graphite and 100 parts by weight of a 5% neoprene latex that all fibers are completely enveloped by the graphite, for which a volume ratio of about 80 parts graphite to 20 parts (asbestos + binder) is required. The dispersant is then removed by heating and the graphite fiber pile is processed by nitscheln on roving, which is then woven, knitted, braided

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 th or processed into a pack by winding over a mandrel.

   Example 4: Loose staple fibers made from asbestos are sprayed with as much of a nitrocellulose solution in
Amyl acetate, that the ratio of asbestos to solvent-free nitrocellulose solution is 98: 2.
This is followed by an electrostatic flocking process, a mixture of approximately equal parts of talc and mica in such a way that each individual fiber is completely covered, u. as soon as possible after the nitrocellulose solution has been sprayed on, as long as the fiber mass is still sticky.

   In this way you can apply so much of the talc and mica mixture that the volume ratio of (talc + mica) to (fiber + binder) is around 70:30.

     Example 5: 8 parts by weight of viscose staple fibers of about 80-30 mm in length are in a
Hollander suspended in water in the usual way, whereupon 90 parts by weight of natural graphite with 98-99% C are added. The amount of water is about 20 to 50 times the amount of fiber. Then you add natural rubber latex in an amount that corresponds to two parts of dry substance and finally a coagulant, e.g. B. a weak acid or alum. This means that the rubber and the graphite are deposited on the fiber in such a way that the mixture can be further processed into a homogeneous fiber fleece.

   After drying, this fleece is shredded in a shredder, whereupon the fibers are processed into a roving yarn on the card and finally processed into a yarn on the spinning machine. from which woven or knitted fabrics are made, which then result in the finished stuffing box pack. In the packs, the volume ratio of (fiber + binder) to graphite is about 5:85.

     Example 6: In a solution of 3 parts of polyvinyl acetate (based on dry substance) in
Amyl acetate is stirred in one after the other: 10 parts of molybdenum disulphide, 76 parts of fine lead dust and 15 parts of chrysotyl asbestos fibers.

   The mass is dried by evaporation of the solvent. Larger pieces that are formed in the process are fiberized in a shredder and the fiber material is processed according to Example 5. The volume ratio of (fiber + binder) to (lead + molybdenum disulfide) is about 4:46.
