<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the production of piston rings
The present invention relates to the production of piston rings with a porous structure by a powder metallurgical process.
It is known to manufacture sliding machine parts, including piston rings, from metal powder to which Cu + C or CuPb + C is added. This production is difficult, however, since the material has to be hot or cold pressed in order to achieve a specific weight of over 7.2 g / cm3. The technical literature including the patent literature shows that the most important mechanical properties of the piston rings produced by powder metallurgy, especially the hardness, tensile and flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, etc., which are decisive in their use, are almost the same as the properties of the conventional cast piston rings . But sintered piston rings are economically more advantageous.
The invention relates to a method for producing piston rings from a mixture of iron powders and graphite with an addition of CuPb or Cu powder by the known powder-metallurgical route, i. H. by cold pressing, sintering at 1050 - 11700 C in a protective gas atmosphere, cooling, calibrating, slitting the rings through a radial section, geometric shaping of the rings in the open state, thermal relaxation and further cooling.
According to the invention, the mixture is first cold pre-pressed into a pellet with a porosity of 10 to 250/0, the pellets either immediately after sintering of about 830-900 C with a temperature of about 830-900 C, which takes place in a reducing, nitride-promoting protective gas atmosphere of split ammonia Always constant minimum speed of 1000 C in 15 minutes, preferably in a protective gas atmosphere, cooled to room temperature, or this cooling takes place in pressed parts that have been cooled as desired after sintering, after they have been reheated to 8300C for one hour, in a reducing protective gas atmosphere a minimum speed of 1000 C in 15 minutes, which is always constant,
whereupon the press lin-

Pressings are ground, trimmed, cut and exposed to oxidation in air for at least 1/2 hour, but at most 20 hours at a constant temperature of 130 to 5700 C; the end of the thermal treatment and the final shaping of the rings in operation is carried out by the heat generated by the engine.
The second heat treatment that follows after cutting is called "thermo-oxy fixation" for short. This designation is to be understood as a heat treatment, which aims to remove the tension created by the previous opening of the pressed part and to fix the new shape of the piston ring with simultaneous oxidation.
The pellets are slit open by a thin radial cut, the thickness of which is given by the blade of the cutting machine and which is approximately 1 mm. The actual heat-setting takes place on a device in which the pellet lies freely on a smooth surface. Before this, a body with the dimensions of the required opening of the ring is inserted into the cut so that the necessary tension is created against the cylinder.
With a thermo-oxy fixation, a selective oxidation of the pellets takes place at the same time as the thermofixation, with a thin surface layer of the black, firmly adhering fep. 4. arises.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The heating in the Thermo-Oxy-Fixation takes place once or more often while maintaining the total duration of 1/2 to 20 hours in air in a temperature range from 130 to 5700 C.
According to a further feature of the invention, small amounts of boron, beryllium or scandium can be added to the powder mixture in order to improve the mechanical properties and in particular to obtain pellets whose porosity approaches the maximum permitted value.
During the thermal operations, especially when sintering in split ammonia, the iron is nitrided, the nitrogen content of which increases several times compared to conventional steels with a nitrogen content of only 0.004 to 0.0080lu.
The piston rings produced in this way contain, depending on the choice of the parameters for time, pressure and temperature, 0.5-5% by weight oxygen and 0.007-3% by weight nitrogen and have the following properties:

The advantages which the invention brings with it are first of all the formation of a further structural component Fe in the final phase of fixing the geometric shape.
Furthermore, the method according to the invention enables the production of a piston ring with a smaller specific weight than previously usual, the porosity being increased and the macro hardness being reduced by the new structural component; In addition to the unchanged micro-hardness of the usual component, the higher micro-hardness of the new component Fe 0 is added, which increases the mechanical values and improves the functional properties of the ring, in particular the resistance to rubbing in.
Due to the fact that the working heat of the engine is used to end the heat treatment and that a constant geometric shape of the ring is only achieved after the run-in, there is a reduction in the roughness of the piston surface or a roughness that is otherwise only found in rings is achieved with a special surface. The overall effect is that the sliding surfaces of the cylinder and the ring come closer together and the capillary forces are almost doubled, so that the ring is not only geometrically perfectly adapted to the cylinder, but also seals better. This results in a reduction in fuel consumption and an increase in performance, as well as an improvement in engine elasticity.
