<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Method for the hot forming of metals The invention relates to the hot forming of metals by pressing (with or without the use of a mandrel), punching or drop forging. Its purpose is to extend the life of the dies, mandrels and punches used in these processes by improving their lubrication and, at the same time, thereby reducing the pressure required to deform a given metal.
The method according to the invention is carried out using a lubricant that is solid before the pressing process and is characterized in that the only lubricant used is an organic lubricant which passes into the gaseous phase during the pressing process and which causes the lubrication in this phase.
The organic material is preferably made of polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, but any other material can also be used which is completely or predominantly converted into gases under the specified conditions. In general, all synthetic polymers can be converted in this way.
It has long been known to press a lubricant under Druckzu between the cold or heated material and the die and optionally the mandrel in the production of rods or tubes in extrusion presses, which can be solid, liquid, pulpy or vaporous. For this purpose, molten slag, borax, etc. have been proposed for higher temperatures and oil for lower workpiece temperatures. Sheets of plastic material, e.g. B. PVC, have already been used as a lubricant in deep drawing, i.e. a cold forming process.
On the basis of these known processes, however, it could not be foreseen that an organic material which is solid at normal temperatures, even if it increases the lubricity during cold deformation, would be able to exert an excellent lubricating effect in the gaseous phase under the conditions of hot deformation. This made it possible for the first time to combine the advantages of a lubricant that was solid before the pressing process, as will be explained in more detail below, with an improved lubricating effect compared to previous agents.
Another lubricant currently in use consists of a mixture of various substances including graphite, carbonaceous materials and an oxygen source, with the graphite being the main component. This lubricant partially evaporates at the operating temperature and pressure applied. In this case, the lubricating effect is mainly due to the graphite.
EMI1.1
means is used to lubricate the die or mandrel and it is assumed that actually all or practically all of the lubricating effect is caused by a gas film generated from the organic material at the operating temperatures and pressures.
In any case, the result is an extended life of the die or mandrel compared to the life when using the above-mentioned graphite-containing lubricants.
The organic material can be used as a molding compound, which can easily be preformed in such a way that it corresponds to the shape of a specific compression nozzle or the like and can therefore be used conveniently. However, the organic material is preferably used in the form of a powder or granules.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
det that is bound to a flammable carrier or is enclosed in such, because in this
Trap the cost of prior deformation of the material can be avoided.
The invention can advantageously be used when extruding pipes using a mandrel passing through the press nozzle. In this case, the mandrel can with the organic
Material covered or coated and lubricated by the gases evolved from it. The
However, the mandrel can also be lubricated by gases which are developed by a solid organic material introduced between the hot metal and the nozzle, i. that is, the mandrel itself does not need to be covered or coated with the organic material. Here, too, with a mandrel lubricated in this way, the inner surface of the pipe produced is of better quality than has been more common in the past
Lubrication methods.
The invention is explained in more detail with reference to the drawings, in which: FIG. 1 shows a schematic illustration of part of a pipe press just before the start of the extrusion; 2 shows a section through a carrier with powdered organic material; 3 shows a plan view of this carrier and FIGS. 4 and 5 depict a drop forging process.
In the press shown in FIG. 1, 1 represents the press cylinder and 2 a movable nozzle carrier, with the aid of which press nozzles can be brought one after the other to snap into the outlet opening of the cylinder; Such a press nozzle is designated by 3. The press is intended for the production of steel pipes and also contains a shaft 4 with a press disk 4a and mandrel 5, which are guided together through the cylinder during the pressing process. The press is shown in the stage in which a ring-shaped workpiece (Zaggel) 6 has been introduced into the cylinder, immediately before the application of pressure. The press nozzle 3 has a frustoconical mouthpiece.
Before this is inserted into the end of the cylinder 1, it is covered with a molded piece 7 made of polyethylene, which rests against the frustoconical part of the nozzle and projects into the nozzle opening with a tubular extension.
This extension piece is provided because the carrier 2 is rotated rapidly in order to bring the nozzle into position, and during this movement the fitting 7 is held in place by the friction of the extension piece inside the nozzle.
Fig. 1 also shows a paper sleeve 8 with a coating of powdery organic material in its position on the mandrel 5. This sleeve is pulled over the mandrel before the introduction of the thorn into the cylinder. The powdery organic material can be bonded to the paper by means of a mixture of trichlorethylene and polystyrene or by means of cold glue.
When the hot workpiece 6 first comes into contact with the shaped piece 7, some smoke is developed, but no substantial gas development takes place until the workpiece is exposed to the pressing pressure. When the pressure is applied, a lot of gas is evolved and this gas is used to lubricate the surface during the entire extrusion process, provided that the polyethylene or
Polyvinyl chloride is present in sufficient quantities. The polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride is not completely converted into gases; Surprisingly, a small tarry residue remains on the face of the pressed pipe.
For example, it was found that when extruding a hollow stainless steel workpiece, using an uncovered dome, through a nozzle with an entry angle of 270, which consisted of 91a tungsten-containing steel, a molded piece 7 made of polyvinyl chloride of 2 mm thick provides complete lubrication of a workpiece 380 mm long and 164 mm outside diameter to produce a pipe 62 mm outside diameter and 50 mm inside diameter, the extrusion ratio being 18: 1 and the length of the pipe being over 6 m. In this case, the inner wall of the press cylinder was lubricated in the usual way by a mixture of oil and graphite.
A particularly expedient way of using an organic material in powder or granular form consists in mixing it with a binding agent and enclosing this mixture between two sheets of paper. Such an element 9 is shown in Figures 2 and 3; It consists of two pieces of corrugated cardboard 10 of the desired size and shape with the mixture 11 of organic material and binding agent in between. For such an element with an outer diameter of 170 mm and an inner diameter of 65 mm, for example, a mixture of 60 g polyethylene, 3b g polystyrene and 1/4 l trichlorethylene can be used, which hardens after being placed between the papers.
If the element 9 is to be used in a compression nozzle fixed by a rotating support, it is brought into position as long as the nozzle is not yet connected to the cylinder and it must be held in position by friction. For this purpose, an attachment 12 is provided which consists of a tube 13 and a flange 14 which is pressed into the mixture before it has hardened.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The tube 13 can be made of sheet metal, cardboard or any other suitable material.
The element 9 can be easily handled; the corrugated cardboard acts as a heat insulator and prevents premature combustion or volatilization of the organic material if the element comes into contact with a hot surface.
A sleeve to be pulled over the mandrel can be made in a similar manner.
In the closed-die forging process shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, flat disks 15 are used which protrude beyond the effective surfaces of the dies 16, as can be seen from FIG. One of the disks 15 is placed in the lower die, the hot metal 17 is placed on top and covered with the second disk 15. just before the top die is brought down.
It has been shown that during an extrusion process the air present in the press cylinder is sufficient to generate the gases by chemical reaction with the polyvinyl chloride or other material, but oxygen can also be added if necessary. For example, the molded body 7 can be covered with a layer of an oxidizing agent, or a substance containing excess oxygen can be incorporated into the mixture 11. A suitable oxidizing agent is e.g. B. Manganese dioxide. The oxidizing agent is not completely converted into gases, which is disadvantageous, so that it is only used in a small amount, e.g. B. at most zozo of the organic material should be used.
The great advantages that can be achieved according to the invention could be made clear by experiments in which in a pipe press pipes made of stainless steel with a content of 18% chromium, nickel and a small amount of titanium were used in the usual way by a mixture of graphite and combustible Substances lubricated nozzle were generated. The average life of these nozzles in the press used corresponded to 35 pressing operations. The surface quality of the pressed stainless steel was such that 50-70% of the pipes had to be sanded to repair surface damage.
The average pressure required during extrusion was 59.3 kg / mmZ, measured on the cross section of the raw workpiece.
EMI3.1
Under otherwise identical conditions, if replaced, the average service life increased to 54 pressing processes, the average number of pipes that require regrinding fell below 5e and the average extrusion pressure to 55.2 kg / mm2.
When a more heat-resistant steel with a content of 18% chromium, 11.5% nickel and 2.2fro molybdenum was extruded at an extrusion ratio of 18: 1, the life of the nozzles was in use
EMI3.2
The pressing work, which normally requires a 1700-ton press, could be performed with a 1530-ton press. Conversely, when using the lubricant according to the invention, a 1700-ton press can be used with a higher extrusion ratio than was previously possible, so that the output that can be achieved by the press can be increased. These advantages are achieved in addition to extending the life of the tool parts.
