wisely, the contact mass is divided into several sections, between which the temperatures of the partially converted gas mixtures can be regulated. If the temperature is too high, the SO 3 / SO 2 equilibrium shifts to the disadvantage of the SO3 formation; if the temperature is too low, the SO 3 / SO 2 oxidation ceases completely; the lowest temperature at which you can still work is referred to below as the light-off temperature.
The heat regulation is practically carried out either with the help of heat exchangers or by blowing in cold air, or by a combination of both measures. Blowing in cold air has the advantage of reducing the SO2 concentration of the gas to be converted, which, according to the law of mass action, increases the achievable conversion. However, the amount of dry air to be blown in is limited by the fact that when the reaction gas is mixed with the cooling gas, the temperature must not fall below the light-off temperature.
In this way, conversions of 98.2 to 98.40 / 0 'are obtained in technical furnaces
The subject of the invention is a method for the production of SOs from SO-containing gases in a manner known per se while blowing air into the contact furnace, which consists in blowing hot air into the contact furnace.
The amount and the temperature of the hot air to be blown in depends of course on the respective conditions, generally the temperature is between about 150 and about 350 C.
According to the invention, the above limit is exceeded if, what seems paradoxical, the cooling air is preheated and thereby the combination between the theoretically calculable increase in conversion through dilution with the empirically determined lowering of the light-off temperature, which obviously depends on the dilution, is carried out.
Example: In the last part of a 50 tpd contact furnace, so much warm air of about 3000C was blown that an SO2 concentration, converted to inlet gas, of 4.50/0, at an outlet temperature of 395C from the last contact part was achieved. A conversion of 99.00 zozo was obtained. In the previous mode of operation, i.e. when cold air was blown in, only a conversion of 98.2% was achieved in the same furnace. Because of the reduction in the SO! Content in the exhaust gas from the sulfuric acid factory, the new process is also of general interest.
