For your safety door
The invention relates to a fire door with two sheet metal walls fastened to a frame, between which insert plates made of asbestos or the like are arranged. Doors of this type have the task of largely preventing heat transfer to the other room if a fire breaks out in one room. Even with long periods of intense heat on one side, the other side of the door should be heated to a maximum of 1000C. It has now been shown that the commercially available asbestos sheets or the like are not sufficiently heat-resistant that they rather char to a certain extent and lose their bond when heated for longer and more intense periods. The same applies to pressed slag wool panels.
In order to protect these insert panels even better and to achieve a more favorable heat resistance, it has already been proposed to provide the asbestos panels on the side of the expected fire with an aluminum foil or to insert such foils between the asbestos panels. The aluminum foils should reflect the heat rays and prevent them from passing through. However, since aluminum melts at temperatures below 6000C, the foils cannot perform this task at higher temperatures.
In contrast, the invention aims to create a fire door in which the insert panels are better protected with simple and inexpensive means and overall a more heat-retardant effect is achieved.
The invention essentially consists in that at least one of the insert plates is provided on at least one side with a spatula-troweled or painted-on protective layer, which consists of a mixture of magnesite and magnesium oxide mixed with water glass, preferably two parts of magnesite powder and one part of magnesium oxide powder. On the one hand, this mixture achieves a sufficient binding capacity, on the other hand, cracks that would otherwise occur and the risk of the layer peeling off are avoided. The layer only needs to have a thickness of 1 to 1.5 mm in order to do its job fully.
In a fire test in which a fire door with insert panels coated according to the invention was heated on one side to 11000C for a period of more than 100 minutes, the average temperature on the other side of the door was only about 80C. The asbestos panel closest to the fire was bare slightly darkened, but otherwise completely unchanged. The remaining plates did not even show any discoloration. In contrast, the first insert plate in a test carried out under the same conditions with uncoated plates was completely black and crumbled.
The temperature on the side of the door facing away from the fire was much higher.
Although it is known to use magnesite and magnesia for refractory furnace linings, it has not previously been possible to produce a usable paint from these substances which would give the described protective effect even in a thin layer. There are also fire doors known, the insert plates of magnesia cement and fillers, so are not commercially available, but must be made separately. After all, it is no longer new to use water glass as a binder in various fields of application, but it has not yet been used as a binder for a coating compound on fire doors.
