Festwert-Speichermatrix
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Fixed value storage matrix
The invention relates to a memory system in matrix form for pulse operation, particularly for digital computing systems; it specifically relates to a read-only memory. Read-only memories are now an integral part of the control of many normal computer systems. In Anglo-Saxon literature they are known as "Read Only Storage".
A known memory system in matrix form for the application mentioned consists of an arrangement of electrical conductors in rows and columns. In this arrangement, information can be stored by introducing coupling elements at selected crossing points of rows and columns.
Arrangements of this type, in which ferrite cores are provided as coupling elements, have already been used to generate control signals for a computer system. The task of the matrix in this application is the formation of rows of control words, each word containing a specific pattern of binary digits. A special switching function is linked to each pattern.
In the known case, these word sequences are formed one after the other by exciting selected rows of the matrix. These rows are selectively coupled to different column read lines through ferrite cores. The number of column read lines is equal to the number of digits in each pattern.
Such a matrix has become known under the name "constant matrix" because the information contained in it is obtained by setting up the coupling elements, e.g. B. magnetic cores, is determined and because new information can not be entered without removing or adding cores.
The inductive read-only memory set up with ferrite cores has the disadvantage of the difficulties associated with automatic core winding, namely, even the simplest matrices have to be wound by hand. Once a matrix is wrapped, it is hardly possible to change the core pattern. Avoiding this disadvantage is part of the task on which the invention is based.
The invention is based on a fixed-value memory matrix, which consists of two preferably vertically crossing groups of mutually isolated parallel wire loops as driver and sensing conductors, which can optionally be coupled to one another at their crossing points by coupling elements, the arrangement of the coupling elements for the information to be displayed is decisive. Read-only memories of this type are also known per se and are intended to be further developed by the invention.
The core of the concept of the invention lies in the special use of Lenz's law when coupling at selected crossing points of the memory matrix or the read-only memory. The well-known Lenz's rule states that the electrical fields, currents and forces generated by induction processes always hinder the process that initiates induction. The induced current always flows in such a way that it prevents the movement that caused it. The magnetic force of the current always works against the magnet that generates it. These facts enable the direction of induction to be determined in advance in the case of an induction that is produced by switching a circuit on and off.
Lenz's law applies to the direction of the induced voltage: Die
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
induced voltage is always directed in such a way that the magnetic field of an induction current generated by it counteracts the cause of the induction.
The invention then relates to a fixed-value memory matrix in which the stored information can be read by selecting the memory location in which the desired information is stored, with inductive coupling by means of a coupling element in the area of the intersection of a matrix line conductor loop with a matrix column conductor loop forming the memory location whose loop halves in both coordinate axes on the one hand enclose a central quadrilateral in a plane parallel to the matrix surface and whose loop halves on the other hand form coordinate crosses, the coordinate beginnings of these coordinate crosses of a memory location being the corner points of the central quadrilateral.
For such a fixed-value memory matrix, the invention consists in that the coupling element is arranged in the form of a closed conductor loop in the quadrant of the coordinate system outside the central square and that part of this closed coupling conductor runs next to the row conductor and another part runs next to the column conductor, so that a linkage through the magnetic flux can form for one matrix conductor with one part of the coupling conductor and for the other part of the coupling conductor with the matrix conductor lying in the other coordinate direction and belonging to the same intersection area.
A memory matrix has already become known which has coupling elements at selected crossing points of driver lines with read lines which modify the electromagnetic field at such a point. These coupling elements sit in the origin of the coordinates of intersecting conductors and each consist of a small square copper plate or a square copper plate provided with a slot or closed conductor loops or an entire matrix area. surface occupying conductive sheet, which has an inclined slot in selected crossing points.
However, this known memory matrix does not contain any return lines routed in the matrix area, either for the driver lines or for the read lines. In contrast, the invention enables the return line to be included in the coupling process and thus an intensification of the coupling effect.
Without any further, special modifications, the arrangement according to the invention provides a favorable ratio of the useful signal to the noise. For certain applications it can be desirable to have a larger output signal. As can still be seen from the following, a certain amount of the flow generated by the driver lines is directed in such a way that it does not influence the coupling lines and is therefore not available for the formation of an output signal. A convenient way of signal amplification is to direct this flow through the memory locations, e.g. By using magnetically permeable material on one or both surfaces of the matrix system.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the schematic drawings. 1 shows a printed pattern of the driver and read lines for the control matrix of a computer system, FIG. 2 shows a printed pattern of the coupling conductors for cooperation with the pattern according to FIG. 1, FIGS. 3 and 4 show the arrangement of the coupling conductors in detail for the storage of the zero or the one, Fig. 5 shows a timing diagram for the pulses occurring during the operation of the device according to the invention and Figs. 6, 7 and 8 show an embodiment for a matrix according to the invention in which the coupling conductors are perforated of a copper-clad insulating sheet.
In Fig. 1, the driver lines and write lines are designated by 1. A sheet 2 made of insulating material carries a set of printed driver lines 1 on one side and a set of printed sense conductors 3 or read conductors on the other side. The lines 1 and 3 are arranged at right angles to one another. The insulating sheet 2 is made of resin-bonded paper and is 0.2 mm thick, although it has been found that sheets of 0.05 mm thick give good results. A system of shielding conductors 4 made of copper, which is used to reduce the interference between adjacent intersection points or crossing points, is provided, likewise printed, on the sheet.
Fig. 2 shows a pattern of the coupling conductors printed on an insulating sheet. The coupling conductors are arranged in such a way that when the sheets according to FIGS. 1 and 2 are brought together, the coupling conductors correspond or are registered with selected intersections of these driver lines and sense lines (read lines). Where a one is to be stored, the coupling conductors are placed on each other for a specific intersection . There is no coupling conductor where a zero is to be stored.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
3 and 4 show details of the arrangement of the coupling conductors. It can be seen there that a coupling conductor is placed in the common area for both the sense and drive conductors to store a one. Four other conductors of this type are located at locations on diagonal areas that protrude radially from this common area.
The easiest way to store a zero is to leave the crossing point free of coupling conductors. Namely, since the drive and sense conductors are at right angles to each other, there cannot be mutual coupling in the absence of a coupling conductor, but an improved signal to noise ratio is obtained when the arrangement of Figure 4 is used. In this arrangement, the common area is left blank and the coupling organs are located directly above, below and on both sides of the common area.
The operation of the device according to the invention is as follows:
Assume that a current is fed to an address conductor in the direction of the arrow shown in FIG. 3. A current is induced in the coupling conductors which generates a field which, according to Lenz's law, tends to counteract the field which is generated by the current in the address conductor. The direction of the current in the coupling conductor is indicated in the drawings by arrows. This current in turn generates an EMF in the sense conductor (read conductor), which forms a "one" in the output.
Similarly, the arrangement of Figure 4 provides a "zero" output from the opposite direction in the sense conductor in response to a change in current of the same polarity as before in the address conductor.
The output on the sense conductor is as shown in FIG. A positive change in the driver current leads to a positive pulse in the sense conductor, and the subsequent negative change in the driver current generates a negative pulse. If a zero is stored, the first pulse in the sense conductor will be negative and the next pulse will be positive.
If it is desired to store ternary information, then the three digits, e.g. B. l, -1 and 0, are represented in sequence by a pattern of coupling conductors, as shown in FIG. 3, u. between. By a pattern, as FIG. 4 shows, and no pattern. This provides a positive pulse on the sense line, followed by a negative pulse, a negative pulse followed by a positive pulse, and no pulse, according to the stored digits.
Although coupling conductors are provided in the form of thin sheets of conductive material in the embodiment described above, these coupling conductors can equally well take the form of closed printed conductors. The structure shown, however, makes the device easier to manufacture because the insulating sheet is initially covered with a conductive pad, e.g. B.
Copper sheet, can be provided, from which the parts of the sheet which do not need coupling conductors are subsequently punched out. Such an arrangement is shown in FIGS. 6-8.
The arrangement of Figs. 6-8 is of sandwich construction and includes the information-bearing copper sheet on its insulating backing and that of the insulating sheet which carries the driver and sense conductors. An additional advantage of this type of construction is that the sheet carrying the information serves as a conductor to reduce the inductance of the drive and sense wires, thus allowing a faster operating speed.
In relation to the above description, it should be mentioned that because of the arrangement of the driver lines only on one side of the coupling conductors, a certain amount of the flow developed when the driver lines are excited does not pass the storage locations.
In certain applications where it is necessary to have a large output signal, the creation of a block of magnetically permeable material such as e.g. B. ferrite material, on one or both surfaces of the matrix an increase in the output signal in the range of up to 10 times.
A particularly convenient embodiment of this improvement is the sandwich form, in which the sheets of FIGS. 1 and 2 are held together between blocks of ferrite material.
