 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Socket connection for pipes made in particular of thermoplastic material
Plastic, as well as the method and core for forming the same
The invention relates to a method of forming the socket for a socket joint for
Pipes made of thermoplastic material, in which one end of the pipe is pushed into the end of the adjoining pipe that is widened to form a socket, and the seal is by at least one in an inner one
Circumferential groove of the sleeve mounted elastic sealing ring is effected, at least on one side of the sealing ring in the groove extending a fixed ring with its outer surface on the groove wall, which forms an axial abutment for the sealing ring with an end wall.

The main field of application of the invention is plastic pipes with larger dimensions.

In the known socket connections, the sealing ring is located in a ring bead with an approximately semicircular or rounded rectangular inner cross section. In the case of small pipe diameters, these beads and the sealing rings located in them are dimensioned relatively large, so that a satisfactory seal is achieved as a result. In the case of larger pipe diameters, however, a difficulty arises in that when the spigot end is pushed into the socket, the spigot end often pushes the sealing ring out of its groove. Of course, this makes assembly much more difficult.

You can glue the sealing ring in the bead. However, this is very cumbersome. You can also improve the seat in the bead by choosing a harder rubber quality for the sealing ring. However, this significantly increases the force required to insert the spigot end and also leads to undesired stresses in the socket and spigot end. Finally, the dimensions of the bead and ring can also be chosen to be significantly larger, so that the ring itself has greater rigidity. However, such a procedure leads to increased material and labor.

It is also known to provide socket pipe connections with a seal constructed according to the stuffing box principle. In these constructions, the sealing ring rests against a shoulder of the socket via an intermediate ring and is pressed axially together via an intermediate ring by means of a "stuffing box" which can be screwed into the socket and thus also pressed against the inserted spigot end. Such constructions are expensive to manufacture and, at least in the case of plastic pipes, require careful, excessive stresses in the socket and the spigot end to avoid assembly. Finally, a coupling sleeve for smooth socket pipes is known which carries a sealing ring at each of the two inwardly drawn-in ends.

The two sealing rings are supported against one another against axial displacement by a spacer cage located inside the sleeve. Transferring the construction of this sleeve to a pipe connection with a sleeve fixed to a pipe would lead to a complex construction that no longer meets today's requirements, since it is difficult to introduce a spacer cage that is sufficiently strong to guide the spigot end in the sleeve.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

In all of these known pipe connections, a bead is first created in the socket; then the sealing ring and then the fixed ring are inserted into the groove. As indicated at the outset, this presents difficulties, especially with large-diameter pipes. Even with small ones
Such an approach is cumbersome.

The invention creates a method of the type outlined at the beginning which does not have the deficiencies of the known methods, that is, the introduction of the sealing rings even with large ones
Pipe diameters permitted and moreover requires a minimum of manufacturing effort.

The method according to the invention is characterized in that, as is known per se, the
The socket end of the pipe is heated up to the thermoelastic deformability area so that the fixed ring or rings and one or more sealing rings are placed on an essentially cylindrical core whose outside diameter is the same as the desired one
The inner diameter of the sleeve is that this core with the rings is pushed into the deformable sleeve end or the sleeve end is pushed onto this core that the sleeve end over the
Core and the rings is solidified by cooling, and that the core is pulled out of the socket end or the latter is pulled off the core.

A particular advantage of this method is that the socket on the
Pipe end can be formed. The fact that the socket end, that is to say the pipe end that has already been expanded to form the socket or preferably still to be expanded to form the socket, extends into the thermoelastic
Deformability area was heated, the pipe end rises when inserting the core over the
Rings away and closes behind them again elastically to the diameter of the core. According to the relativity principle of mechanics, the sleeve end can of course also be connected to the
Core are pushed without leaving the invention.

The molding of sleeves onto thermoplastic plastic pipes by heating them in the thermoelastic deformability area and sliding them onto a core is known.

Under certain circumstances, it can be advantageous for the area deformed to accommodate the sealing ring or the sealing rings and at least one fixed ring to be radially compressed from the outside before the re-solidification of the socket end.

This increases the snugness of the elastically contracting pipe part.

The method is carried out particularly favorably if this compression is brought about by axially sliding on a corresponding hollow shape, since the end face of the sleeve can also be shaped at the same time.

In order to avoid too rapid solidification of the sleeve end, which is in the thermoelastic temperature range, when the core is inserted, it is advantageously heated beforehand. The insertion of the core is also advantageously facilitated by the fact that the core is provided with a lubricant after the rings have been applied and before it is inserted into the socket end. The sealing ring is advantageously held together radially from the outside before being pushed into the deformable socket end. This is essential insofar as the maximum diameter of the sealing rings, because of the elasticity of the same, is often kept somewhat larger than the maximum diameter of the groove receiving the ring later. If such a ring sits on the core, it may sag a little below.

Under certain circumstances, this slack can prevent the socket end from slipping properly over the ring when it is pushed into the socket end, which has been made elastically deformable. This is avoided by holding the ring together radially.

The invention also comprises a core for performing the method. This core is characterized in that it consists of an essentially cylindrical body which has stops which can be brought out of action at will for holding the fixed ring closest to the core tip. These stops prevent that when the core is pushed into the sleeve end to be expanded, the elastic plastic of the sleeve does not climb over the first fixed ring when it strikes, but pushes the ring in front of it.

Since a second, preferably provided, fixed ring, lying away from the core tip, must be secured against the sleeve plastic trying to push it in front of it when it strikes this ring, an axially displaceable cylinder on the core is provided for this purpose according to the invention. In order to hold the sealing ring or the sealing rings radially, according to the invention, a bushing axially displaceable on the cylinder is provided before it is pushed into the deformable socket end.

The invention also comprises an embodiment of the socket connection which is particularly favorable for carrying out the method. This is characterized by the fact that the socket opening

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

remote fixed ring has a profile whose outer surface slopes away from the sealing ring to the inner sleeve surface. Such a design makes it much easier to push the thermoelastic pipe end onto the fixed ring. The construction is particularly favorable if a fixed ring is arranged on both sides of the sealing ring, the outer surface of each of the two fixed rings sloping away from the sealing ring to the inner sleeve surface.

As a result, the axial distance on which the thermoelastic pipe end can contract again after crossing the sealing ring is lengthened and an excessive rounding of the transition of the bead on the side facing the socket opening into the cylindrical socket area is avoided.

The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawings in the form of exemplary embodiments. Fig. 1 shows in axial section a pair of fixed rings as they can be used according to the invention, Fig. 2 shows in the same representation another embodiment of a pair of fixed rings, Fig. 3 shows in axial section the upper half of the preferred embodiment of a socket end manufactured according to the invention two sealing rings, FIG. 4 shows in axial section the production of the preferred embodiment of a socket end according to the invention with only one sealing ring during the insertion of the core and FIG. 5 shows the same construction as FIG. 4 after the insertion of the core has ended.

In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the end of the pipe-l-is an insertion sleeve

also the fixed rings-4, 5 and 6--. The sealing rings --7 and 8 - are made of rubber. The pipe is suitable for pressurized lines, u. both for those who are under internal as well as for those who are under external pressure.

As can be seen from the drawings, the fixed rings --5-- with their inclined outer surfaces lie firmly against the wall of the extension --3-- of the socket. They leave between them
 EMI3.2

Cross section free. The cross section of these annular grooves widens outwards. As a result, the sealing rings --7 and 8 - find an excellent hold in it, and it is avoided that they are
Pushing the spigot end out of the grooves holding them. It goes without saying that the inside diameters of the fixed rings 4, 5 and 6 are slightly larger than the outside diameter of the spigot to be inserted, taking into account the manufacturing tolerances.

   To
To avoid notch effects, the edges of the rings - -4, 5 and 6 -butted against the inner surface of the pipe socket - are rounded. The peculiar profile of the sealing rings used here is characterized by particularly great flexibility without excessive increase in the forces required for inserting the spigot end. If the sealing rings 7 and 8 are interchangeable in the construction shown, the support rings must be divided or slotted.

In the case of the fixed rings -12 and -13-shown in FIG. 2, for example made of a thermosetting plastic, a groove -9 of dovetail profile is provided in each of the sides facing the sealing ring. These rings are particularly suitable for being firmly connected to the rubber ring. For this purpose, they are used in the shape intended for the production of the rubber ring. If the rubber sealing ring is then injected, the dovetail-shaped grooves-9-are also filled with the rubber, and a firm, form-fitting connection is created.

The sleeve construction shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 represents the preferred embodiment of a sleeve with only one sealing ring. It differs from the construction according to FIG. 3 essentially only in that one sealing ring is provided instead of two sealing rings.

Accordingly, the axial extent of the entire sealing construction is significantly less than in the construction according to FIG. 3.

The method according to the invention for producing the socket connection according to the invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to FIGS. 4 and 5, in which the core 16 is shown in section in the upper half.

The core --16-- consists mainly of a steel jacket, the outer shape of which essentially corresponds to the inner shape of the pipe socket to be produced. Its right end in Fig. 5 is tapered to make it easier to push on the thermoelastic pipe end.

To hold the right hard ring - 21 - the core has some radially movable pins - -24-- which, under the influence of a spring --25--, strive to move so far into the core that they cover the circumferential surface of the core no longer protrude. These pins cooperate with a conical control piece --29--, which sits on the rod --31-- that is inserted into the

Bearing washers 28 and 30 are axially guided.

If the rod is moved axially to the right into the position shown in Fig. 4 and 5, the pins --24-- are radially outwards

axially displaceable a bushing --17--, which serves to secure the fixed ring --20-- against being caught by the end --32-- of the socket end --27-- and shifted along the core. Since the end of the fixed ring --20-- on the left in Fig. 4 and 5 is advantageously as sharp-edged as possible in order to avoid the formation of dirt chambers, the contact surface between the bushing -17- is, as is also indicated in the drawings. and the fixed ring --20 - conical.

On the bush-17-there is also a second bush -18- which is axially displaceable and which is intended to hold the sealing ring -22- before it is pushed into the elastically deformable sleeve end -27- radially inwards. The right front end of this ring can be grasped by the socket end-32- while being pushed into the socket end and then slides on the bushing-17-.

The implementation of the method according to the invention is described below with reference to FIGS. 4 and 5.
 EMI4.2
--31-- The bushes --17 and 18 - are in the position shown in Fig. 4, where they are held. The two fixed rings - 20 and 21-- can also be made of a plastic that softens at a higher temperature than the pipe. Now the bar --31-- turns to the right
 EMI4.3
Coat the outside with a lubricant before application.

Now the core is pushed into the sleeve end, which has been made elastically deformable by softening in the meantime. This socket end is expanded, as can be seen from FIG. When the outermost edge -32- of the socket end has reached the position shown in Fig. 4, it pushes the bushing -18- in front of it against the pressure of a weak spring, not shown. When the sleeve 18 has reached the outer stop collar on the sleeve 17, it actuates a limit switch, not shown, which after a certain delay moves the sleeves 17 and 18 to the left.

In this state the extreme left end - 32 of the sleeve - has already enclosed the sealing ring - 22 - and holds it clamped together in the radial direction. Furthermore, it has already come so far on the outer conical circumference of the fixed ring --20-- that it no longer tries to push this ring in front of it, but rather because of the inclination of the circumferential surface of the ring --20-- it is in holds its position. Now the two bushings - 17 and 18 - can be dispensed with and are therefore put out of action. This state of the two rings is shown in FIG.

It is of course essential that the inner diameter of the liner --18-- must be selected so that the right-hand face of this liner still rests with a sufficiently large area on the left-hand face of the pipe socket end when the two bushings --17 and 18-in the position shown in Fig. 5 can be withdrawn out of the operative position. Now the core slides further into the elastic sleeve end, which constricts itself again after it has exceeded the annular bead formed by the rings. It slides until the left end --32-- of the socket end is in contact with the right end of the bush-17-.

Now, if necessary, the bead created can also be reshaped from the outside. However, this is usually not necessary.

Finally the socket is cooled and thereby solidified. Now after moving the rod to the left --31-- and the resulting pulling in of the pins --24--, the core --16-- can be pulled out of the finished sleeve.
