Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  (Fig. 2).

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

  Process for bending and hardening glass panes
The invention relates to a method for bending and hardening glass panes.

   There is currently a great demand, particularly in the automotive industry, for glass sheets with a composite curvature, i.e. H. for panes that are curved in the direction of their length and across it and therefore do not have any straight elements. It is of course possible to bend glass sheets to such curvatures by pressing glass, which is held by tongues, with complementary fixed positive and negative shapes. In addition to this, horizontal bending with the aid of gravity is used, a so-called "ring" shape is used which only engages the periphery of the glass sheet to be bent, allowing the glass sheet to be formed into the desired shape under the influence of heat and sometimes with the help of moments of force that are applied by movable mold sections.

   An inherent disadvantage of such techniques is the need for contact between the glass to be bent and solid objects such as the tongues or the mold surfaces. In the methods and devices for bending glass sheets without contact between the glass and the fixed device bases, glass sheets are carried on a stream of hot gas and conveyed along a horizontally extending bed, the shape of which changes from a flat shape to a curved shape to produce a sheet of glass curved in a direction transverse to the movement path. One of the main advantages of such a process is that the glass sheets can be continuously molded into the final desired shape on the support bed.

   However, if the desired shape of the finished sheet of glass has a compound curvature, i. H. a curvature extending both in the direction of travel and transversely thereto makes it difficult to create such a shape with a support bed while the disc is continuously being conveyed.

   It is an object of the invention to provide a method which provides compound curvatures while continuously conveying sheets of glass without the need for a support bed or other mold surface to conform to the final desired shape. In short, this is achieved by thermally superimposing, in a controlled and reproducible manner, a permanent compound curvature of the original shape or of another shape into which the disk was first physically brought.

   The invention relates to a method for bending and hardening glass panes, in which a glass pane is introduced between two quenching beds provided with gas nozzles, the glass pane being at least partially supported by the cooling gas during its cooling through the transformation area and, after it has been cooled below the transformation area, edge-wise between the gas nozzles.

   The method is characterized in that the two main surfaces of the glass pane are each cooled at different cooling speeds over the transformation area, these two different cooling speeds being suddenly reduced after the glass has been partially cooled through the transformation area, and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the respective cooling speeds can still be kept different.

   The use of different but uncontrolled cooling to change the shape of the glass from just before it is hardened to a time after it has cooled below the hardening range has been proposed, i.a. According to this known proposal, larger blowing currents are used against the lower surface than against the upper surface of the pane in order to eliminate the tendency of the heat capacity of the hardening mold to delay the cooling rate of the part of the glass in contact with the mold. Therefore, the ultimate purpose of this proposal is to achieve a balanced cure. Another proposal relates to a method for hardening glass objects, it being possible to achieve different degrees of hardening in the glass.

   This means the degree of hardening generally known in the industry; H. the amount of pressure or tension created in the glass. This stress is a function of the rate of cooling to which the molten glass has been subjected. This proposal involves cooling one or both sides of the glass in a manner which varies through the glass thickness, producing a uniform hardening and consequently an equal cooling rate on both glass surfaces, in contrast to the unequal speeds according to the invention.

   In addition to these measures, it is generally known to support glass panes on gas beds and to harden them, but without using differentiated cooling in the area of the hardening zone.

   The invention exploits the phenomenon that when quenching in a way in which one main surface of the pane is cooled at a greater rate than the opposite main surface at a time when the temperature of the pane is in the tempering area of the glass, the quenching, in addition to hardening the disc, when it is cooled to a temperature at which it is no longer deformable by viscous flow, a permanent composite curvature is superimposed on the shape of the disc that existed immediately prior to quenching, e.g. B. turns a flat disc into a disc with compound curvature.

   A disc curved in one direction with rectilinear elements in the other will have a compound curvature of reduced radius when the convex surface is cooled at greater speed (thereby producing a greater curvature in the direction in which it was previously curved, and a curvature is created in the direction in which the rectilinear elements previously extended). As the concave surface is cooled at a greater rate, the disc is formed into a double and opposite curvature. A sheet of glass that previously had a compound curvature will now have a curvature with increased or decreased radii depending on which side is cooled more quickly.

   The method according to the invention can be carried out with a device in which glass panes are carried on a stream of gas while they are heated, if appropriate bent and quenched, thereby preventing contact of the glass with stationary device parts and maintaining the exact desired shape during the entire process becomes. In the quenching zone, upper and lower nozzle beds are arranged close to the glass sheet to be treated (i.e. less than 3.8 mm apart) in order to achieve the greatest possible heat transfer and precise control of the heat transfer.

   It is therefore a practical necessity that the glass sheet be temporarily held practically in its original shape corresponding to that of the nozzle beds while it is being quenched to prevent contact between the nozzles and the glass.

   When carrying out the method according to the invention, a pane of glass which is quenched between opposing currents of a cooling flow medium can also then temporarily, u. zw. At least while it is in the hardening area, are kept in their original shape if a greater cooling rate is used on one side than on the opposite side of the disk by reducing the originally set cooling rates during quenching while still the The cooling rate on the one hand is greater than that on the other.

   Forces acting on the glass pane are thereby practically balanced and the glass pane is temporarily held essentially in its original shape, which corresponds to that of the nozzle arrangement during the quenching process and while the temperature of the pane is within the transformation or hardening range.

   It is believed that the faster quenched surface will tend to stabilize to a permanent dimension that is longer than that of the opposite surface, as a higher notional temperature (i.e. a temperature below which the glass is no longer deformable) in the faster cooled surface is produced. On the other hand, the more slowly quenched surface is at a higher temperature and is therefore temporarily thermally higher

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 Mass extended than the opposite surface. As long as these two phenomena balance each other out, the disk remains in its original shape.

   It was found, however, that the thermal expansion of the slowly cooled side very soon no longer suffices to maintain this initial equilibrium, especially after the pane has been cooled to around the lower temperature limit of the transformation range of the glass (i.e. around 6200C surface temperature at commercially available soda Lime-silicate window and sheet glass). As a result, the glass tends to bend.

   A decrease in the absolute cooling rates of both sides of the disc, while the faster quenched side is still being cooled at a higher rate, temporarily counteracts the development of an imbalance and the tendency of the disc to bend, since the more slowly cooled side is affected by the heat heats up again in the disc at greater speed than the opposite side. This results in an increase in the thermal expansion of the more slowly cooled surface and the pane practically remains in its original shape.

   The method according to the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the drawings, in which a device suitable for carrying out the method is shown.

   Fig. 1 shows schematically a system which is advantageous for heating glass panes to a deformation temperature, e.g. B. to a temperature at which the glass can conform to a load bearing force and harden, can be used to quench such parts while they are hot and to convey the so hardened wafers onto a roller conveyor to carry them away.

   The individual sections that make up the complete system include a preheating section-Ar-, in which the glass is conveyed on rollers-20-between radiant heaters-22-above and below the glass in order to preheat the glass until it reaches a suitable preheating temperature which is lower than the deformation temperature, a heating section-B - with gas film support, into which the glass panes are transferred and in which they are carried on the film of the hot gas while they are driven by a friction drive, e.g.

 which are in alignment throughout Section-A-in order to position the glass correctly for transport to the next gas support. Each conveyor roller is set in rotation by toothed wheels --32-- via a common shaft --33-- driven by a motor --34--.

   2, 3 and 4 show that the heating section --B-- with gas film support made of three similar-

 borrowed, adjoining units --36 - exists. which are each housed in a support frame, as shown in FIG. The support frame consists of beams --37-, posts --38-- and beams --39-- and rests on supporting blocks --35--.

   Each unit --36-- comprises a flat bed-40-- made of modules-41--, which are arranged at a distance from one another, but not next to one another geometrically, like in a mosaic. In the illustrated embodiment, all modules have -. 4, 1-- a rectangular shape at its top. and they form a common surface which changes from a planar shape to a curved shape in the direction of glass movement, as shown in greater detail in Figs. 6-8. The modules -41- are arranged in successive rows which cross the intended path of movement of the workpiece, each row being arranged at an angle to this path which is not 900 and is close to the next adjacent row.

   Each module --41-- has a stem --42-- with a smaller cross-sectional area than the upper end, and each opens into a storage space which is under the bed -. 4, 0-- is arranged (Fig. 4 and 9). Each module is practically enclosed by other modules and is separated from them by a distance which provides an outflow zone. The bed is set at such a height that the plane of the upper ends of the modules is parallel to, but just below the plane through the upper surfaces of the conveyor rollers --20-- of the support height between the modules and the glass sheet Preheating section is formed. On one side, each storage space --43-- is connected to five gas burners --44-- through openings --45-- (Fig. 1) and flexible couplings --46--.

   The gas support bed is inclined laterally at an angle of about 50 with respect to the horizontal, as shown in FIG. On the deeper side of the bed --40-- a series of uniform, disk-like drive wheels --26-- extend inwardly just above the bed, in order to frictionally engage only one edge of the workpiece and to move it in a continuous straight line along the bed promote. A plurality of openings --48-- extend through the roof of each unit --36-- to vent the interior to atmosphere. The drive wheels -26- are on

 a motor-driven drive shaft --53-- set in rotation. Heat is supplied from above and below in the carrying bed -40- by a ceiling spotlight -54- and a floor spotlight -55-.

  (Fig. 2). Gas is introduced into the burners --4-- through lines not shown. Each burner-44- is designed for direct air heating. The combustion in the combustion chamber creates sufficient storage pressure to supply the modules with heated gas of uniform temperature and pressure.

   Figures 6 through 8 show a transition section of the module bed 40 for use in bending glass while it is carried on a gas stream. The heights of the modules -. 4, 0-- above the storage space --43-- are optionally and progressively changed, u. both in the direction of glass movement and in the transverse direction, by progressively reducing the depths of the module cavities so as to gradually change the surface defined by the upper ends of the modules from a flat to a curved shape. As each module supports an overlying portion of the glass a uniform distance from its end, the deformable glass will progressively flex to conform to the shape of the bed.

   After the heating section --B-- with gas support, the quenching section --C-- (Fig. 1, 3 and 5) follows in the direction of movement of the glass pane. The quench section - C - contains curved beds --90-- of modules --81-- arranged in a mosaic pattern similar to that of the heating bed. Each module --81-- has a stem --82-- with a smaller cross-section than the upper end and protrudes from a cooling box --83-- into a storage unit -84--, with the cooling box and
 EMI4.2
 placed so that it has the same height and the same shape as the end portion of the heating bed just present.

   Over the bed-80- lies a cover-92- which is fastened in such a way that it can be raised and lowered and which is essentially a mirror image of the bed -80- and its associated cooling box -83- and the memory space --84--. The upper and lower cooling

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 boxes and storage rooms are supplied separately with heat exchange fluid and air in the same way. The cover is rigidly attached to cross bars or beams -97- and vertically adjustable.

   As shown in Figure 3, the quench section-C- is divided into two adjacent beds of modules, designated Section I and Section II, which are practically equal in length. The distance between the upper and lower beds of each of these sections can be adjusted independently. Section I is divided into two sections IA and IB, section IA being slightly shorter than section IB. Relatively cool gas, such as air at ambient temperature. is supplied to the upper and lower storage tanks of sections IA and IB and II independently of one another by separate fans -89, 90 and 91--.

   Independent control of the flow and pressure to the upper and lower accumulators of each section from the associated fans is achieved by suitable valves --93 and 94 - in the individual lines - 95 and 96 - which supply each accumulator (Fig. 5). The throttle valve -93- in line -95 -controls the flow and pressure from the blower -89- to the upper accumulator of section IA, and the throttle valve -94- in line -96- controls the Flow and pressure to the lower reservoir.

  The independent fans - 89, 90 and 91-- facilitate separate control of the flow and pressure to each of the three sections of the quench.

   Heat exchange fluid, such as cooling water from the inlet pipe branches -85-, is introduced into the cooling boxes and drained from them through outlet pipe branches -88-. This will keep the beds at a practically uniform temperature throughout.

   The conveying means for the quenching system comprise disk-like drive members-260- which have sufficiently narrow peripheral edges that they extend inwardly between the upper and lower module beds to frictionally engage only one edge of the workpiece and this along the bed in continuous linear motion to transport.

   The drive pulleys --260- are open
Shafts - 500 - are attached, which run in bearings-510-which are provided in the support of the lower bed (Fig. 5). Each shaft -500-- and the last three shafts -50-- closest to the quenching section are connected by gears to a drive shaft which is driven at normal speed by a motor -147- or at high speed a motor - is driven (Figs. 2 and 3). All drive pulleys --26 and 260 - are operated at normal transport speed by the motor --147--.

   With a suitable drive shaft and coupling arrangement --145 - the last three drive parts of the heating section and the disks of the quenching section can be driven at high speed by the motor --146 - while the motor --147 - continues to drive the remaining drive parts at normal speed Speed drives. Such a high-speed drive is controlled by a time-controlled control mechanism -148- which is operated by a pressure sensor -149- near the end of the heating section. The sensor responds to the presence of a pane of glass in a position in which it must be transferred to the quench at high speed.

   After a period of time that is sufficient to allow the glass pane to be transferred, the time-controlled control switches the drive of all drive parts --26 and 260 - back to the motor --147 - at normal speed.

   As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the delivery roller section --D-- consists of conveyor rollers --200--, which guide shoulders-210-- in the direction of alignment with disks --260-- of the Abschreckab section have the correct one Maintain the position of the glass during the transfer. Each roller is rotatably mounted in bearings --220-- and is driven by gear wheels --230-- via a common shaft --240--, which is connected to a drive motor --250--.

   The modules -41- which form the support bed -40- are shown in detail in FIG.

  Each module --41 - forms a chamber open at the top. The top of each module defines a zone of practically uniform pressure under the overlying glass. The pressure is exerted by gas which is sent to each module --41-- from the supporting storage space --43-- via the hollow supporting-

 arranged to prevent the pressurized gas from impinging directly on the supported glass surface and to ensure that the gas introduced into each cavity is dispersed in the gas already present, ensuring uniform pressure across the top edges of the module. In addition, the outlet openings create a drop in gas pressure from the interior of the reservoir to the interior of the module.

   Another embodiment of a module --410 - is shown in FIGS. 10 and 11. This mo-

 dul is similar to module-41--, but is divided into four independent sub-chambers by the walls-150, 151, 152, and 153-. Separate outlets --155 - establish a connection between a hollow stem-420- and each sub-chamber of the module, so that each sub-chamber functions independently of the others. In this way, support is ensured if any of the sub-chambers is covered with glass.

   The deterrent module -81- is shown in more detail in Fig. 12. Each module - has a prismatic body - 160 - with an end face or, in the position of the module
 EMI6.1
 extend outside of a central part of the module, at this point each groove is connected via a radial section --163-- with a central passage --164-- which extends through the stem --182-- and a connection with the storage space -84-. A fixed cap --165-- cooperates with the section --163-- of the radial grooves and the central passage - to form a restricted exit opening for each groove -162-.

   With this arrangement, the gas from the accumulator is injected under pressure into the central portion of each curved partition of the module and flows along the grooves --162 - as it flows over their walls and over the top surface -161-- of the module - 81-- escapes to the outflow zones --166-- which surround each individual module. When the module is close to the disk, the pressure of the gas in the grooves --162 - and near the surface exerts a force against the disk that is sufficient to support it.

   With this arrangement, an extremely high level of heat transfer and precise control of the level of heat transfer between the adjacent pane and the flowing gas is achieved; H. the speed of heat transfer can easily be changed by regulating the gas flow and / or the distance between the modules and the glass.

   Working method
For a more detailed explanation, an example of a preferred mode of operation is given below, which is applied to the treatment of glass panes.

   Flat panes of glass with a thickness of 6.1 mm and a width of about 38 cm and a length of 76 cm are placed one after the other in the longitudinal direction on the rollers -20-- of the preheating section -A-, whereby they are correctly aligned through the guide shoulder -21- and conveyed on the rollers --20-- in and through the preheating section at a speed of about 6 m / min. Electric heating coils - above and below the moving glass, provide sufficient heat to the preheating section to raise the temperature of the glass to about 5100 C surface temperature with about 9.14 meters of glass movement.

   As soon as the leading edge of the glass pane leaves the last roll of the preheating section and progressively covers the modules --41-- of the support bed --40--, the pane is only partially and finally completely supported by the uniform gas pressure that emerges from the modules. This gas pressure is never too high and is in any case kept low enough and uniform enough from module to module so that it does not cause any bending or other deformation of the glass.

  Once the glass is completely carried by the gas, it is conveyed by touching the edge via a friction connection of its lower edge with the rotating drive pulleys-26-. For this purpose the entire system is inclined in a common plane at an angle of 50 ° with respect to the horizontal in order to give the glass a force component perpendicular to the drive pulleys.

   The gas burners --44 - are supplied with natural gas and air in a volume ratio of about 1: 36, which means 260% excess air over the amount that is required for complete combustion. The natural gas is supplied in an amount of around 1.7 m3 / h and 0.0929 m2 per bed. The combustion products are introduced into the storage spaces and generate a pressure of around 35 g / cm2. Each module contains outlet openings that reduce this pressure in the module cavities, which are covered with glass, to about 1/21 of the storage pressure. Gas is introduced into the stem of each module at a temperature of 6500 C and in a volume of about 0.0378 m 3 / min.

   The module bed of this example consists of 120 modules of 0.0929 m2 each of the type shown in Fig. 9, and the top of each module forms a square, the outer sides of this square being 25.4 mm long and the distances between the walls of adjacent modules 2.381 mm. Each wall is 1.587 mm thick.

   The module bed first has a flat shape and is then, as shown in FIGS. 6 to 8,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 curves to form a gradually changing support plane which is initially flat and then is convex and cylindrically curved about an axis parallel to the direction of movement. The radius of curvature of the curved bed section is 152.5 cm. The change in curvature begins about 4 m after the start of the heating section, where the glass has reached a temperature of about 650 C and is sufficiently malleable to easily follow the gradually changing contour of the module bed at the speed at which the glass is moving is promoted.

   The nominal module load-bearing pressure when covered with a 6.1 mm thick glass pane is 1.6 g / cm2 above the pressure above the glass, creating a nominal distance of 0.25 mm between the underside of the glass pane supported by the gas film and the upper end of the module walls is created. The nominal discharge pressure is essentially one atmosphere abs.

   In order to heat the glass, the supporting gas is maintained at a temperature which is higher than that of the glass during the heating step until the glass has reached the desired temperature.

  In this case, heat is supplied to the glass by both convection and radiation from the carrying gas, which has a temperature of about 6500C. The heat is generated by radiation in the chamber from the ceiling heating coils --54 - at a temperature above that of the glass, usually around 7000 C. When glass is placed in the furnace, the radiators are activated to accommodate fluctuations in heat demand.

   In this way the temperature of the glass is raised to about 6500C by the time (about 3.5 minutes) the glass completes its movement through a length of 20 m of the preheating and heating section. Storage spaces close to the bottom spiral 55 help to retain the surrounding heat in the furnace chamber and they keep the storage boxes hot.

   When the leading edge of the glass runs over the pressure sensor-149-- of a pressure switch with time-controlled control, a timer in the control mechanism begins to run. This timing device is set to the specific speed at which the glass is advanced in order to initiate the high-speed run when the leading edge of the glass reaches the end of the heating section. At this time, the drive for the last three disks --26 - of the heating section for all disks --260- of the quenching section changes from motor --147 - to motor --146 - via a suitable coupling and drive shaft arrangement. The glass sheet is conveyed very quickly from the heating section into the quenching section at a speed of about 25 cm / sec.

   The timer then switches the drive back to the motor --147 - at normal speed and the glass is conveyed through the quenching section at the normal speed of 6 m / min.

   In the quench section, the upper and lower module beds are divided into two main sections - I and II - each 1.524 m in length, and the first section is in two sections - IA and IB - 0.61 m and 0.914 m in length divided. The beds are curved transversely to the trajectory in the same way as the end portion of the heating section, and the curvatures coincide with one another (i.e. with a radius of curvature of 1.524 m). Water is passed through the cooling boxes - at a flow rate of 3, 785 l / min and 0.0929 m2 each of the bed, with the inlet temperature of the water being around 150C and the outlet temperature around 270C.

   Each quench module bed in this example consists of square modules with a surface area of about 13 cm 2 and of the type shown in FIG. An outflow gap between the neighboring modules

Air flow speed through the module beds of the quenching section in Nmtr./min/cm of the quenched glass surface.

   According to the table above, the glass is initially quenched when it leaves the heating section with a temperature of around 6500C, in that the upper surface is cooled at a greater speed than the lower surface. Each part of the glass sheet is subjected to this cooling rate for about 2.4 seconds. As the glass transitions from the quenching section - IA - to the quenching section - the rate of cooling of the top and bottom surfaces of the glass sheet is reduced. The reduced speed is practically maintained as the glass sheet enters the second quenching section.

   However, the upper surface does not need to be cooled at a greater rate than the lower surface in the stage --IB - and the stage - II -, since the upper surface is cooled with a higher heat transfer coefficient than the lower surface. The cooling rate of the upper surface can, however, either be greater or less than the cooling rate of the other surface, u. or depending on the air-to-glass temperature differential. There may be a smaller temperature difference between the air and the upper surface of the glass than between the air and the lower surface of the glass.

   Therefore, the cooling rate of the lower surface can then be greater than that of the upper surface, although the heat transfer coefficient of the upper module bed remains higher.

   The glass pane is quenched in section IB and section II for a total of about 12.6 seconds. The hardness in the glass and the changed shape have already been essentially created in section-IA-. The section-IB- and the section -II- keep the pane temporarily in its original shape due to the continued cooling. In this way, as the glass passes through the quench, it is held in a curvature which practically matches that of the quench bed. At the end of the hardening process, the glass pane can no longer be deformed by the viscous flow of the glass. The glass is then conveyed by the air support of the Abschreclt- system to the rollers of the Uefersystem through the panes --260 and onto the rollers-200-at.

   As soon as the glass leaves the quenching device and cools down to room temperature, it assumes a different curvature than that of the module bed due to the differential cooling in section-IA-. In this example, the glass sheet assumes a radius of curvature of 137 cm in the direction transverse to the direction of movement and a radius of curvature of 36.6 m in the direction along the direction of movement. During the quenching process, the glass pane is kept essentially conforming to the curvature of the module bed in spite of the differential cooling, since the reduced cooling rate was applied in the quenching sections --IB and n-.

   Panes of glass treated in the above manner have a final stress, expressed in terms of mean stress, as indicated by the birefringence of polarized light rays of about 3300 millimicrons per 2.54 cm of glass.

   It will be apparent that other forms of apparatus for carrying and conveying sheets of glass on a gas or other flow medium can be used in place of the embodiment described which use modules. For example, a porous bed or another

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 whose form of perforated support plates can be used so long as the glass is supported uniformly while it is heated to a temperature suitable for bending and / or tempering. Another option is to balance the glass and support or hold it vertically instead of horizontally.

   If some damage or warping of the glass can be allowed, it is possible to convey glass on rollers throughout the heating and quenching operations. Such conveying techniques are used in particular where the glass pane is not bent by the viscous flow of the glass before hardening, but instead rather remains flat. The invention can be used to deform such planar disks to produce disks with a compound curvature.

   When carrying out the method according to the invention, it is expedient to keep the glass panes in their shape before hardening during the quenching process. On the other hand, if the distance between the quenching nozzles and the glass is large, the originally established differential cooling rate need not be reduced during the hardening, but instead the pane can bend during the quenching. However, such an arrangement is disadvantageous in terms of precise control of the final curvature of the pane, since it is difficult to precisely set the differential speeds of the heat transfer in the case of large gaps between the nozzles and the glass pane.

   In the embodiment described, the glass sheet can deform into a cylindrical curvature which is convex upwards, with the upper surface of the glass being cooled faster than the lower surface. The differential cooling rate therefore increases the final overall curvature (i.e., decreases the radius of curvature in both transverse and longitudinal directions), thereby superimposing a compound curvature on the cylindrical bend imparted to the glass sheet prior to hardening. It can easily be seen that the lower surface of the glass sheet can be cooled faster than the upper surface. In addition, the disk can be allowed to deform into a concave upwardly shaped shape.

   Of course, the pane of glass can initially be deformed into curvatures that are not cylindrical curvatures. Thus, a sheet of glass which was originally thermoformed into a composite curvature, i.e. H. by moving the glass over a. both in the transverse direction and in the longitudinal direction of the path of movement curved bed, can be changed into a compound curvature, which has ver different radii of curvature.

   In general, in order to produce curvatures which differ appreciably from the original curvatures present before hardening, one side of the glass sheet should initially be cooled at a rate which is at least 10% greater than the rate at which the opposite side is cooled. This speed is usually at least 25% faster. The larger the differential, the greater the change in curvature.

   Normally the sheet of glass is placed on a practically uniform, i.e. H. heated isothermal state before quenching. The time for such heating is generally calculated in minutes and is usually less than 10 minutes. It will be understood that an isothermal condition need not exist in the glass prior to quenching in practicing the invention.

  In fact, a non-uniform gradient between the major surfaces of the pane can help keep the glass in its original shape during the quenching process by raising the temperature of the surface to be cooled more slowly to an initially higher temperature than the opposite surface .

   When a sheet of glass is heated, it is possible to create a temperature differential across the surfaces by increasing the temperature of one surface above the temperature of the other, so that when the glass is quenched in the quenching section and both sides are cooled, a cooling rate differential between the surfaces and results in differential cooling of the main surfaces. Accordingly, a differential cooling of the main sides can be achieved by heating each side to a different temperature within or preferably in the entire hardening temperature range and creating a temperature gradient between the main surfaces, which results in the production of a second shape of the disc when the temperature of the disc approximately returns to isothermal room conditions.

   In practice, it has been found to be extremely advantageous to keep the glass sheets in their pre-hardening form during the application of the unequal speeds on the opposite sides by suddenly reducing the cooling speeds during quenching and after the glass has been partially cooled by the tempering area, however at least before the glass reaches 4250 C

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 Surface temperature had cooled down. With such a sudden change, the cooling rates applied to the top and bottom surfaces are typically reduced by at least 10%.
