Description

Process for the preparation of carbide in continuous operation.

The usual method of making carbide is to use a mixture of quick lime with coal and the like. Like. Is brought to melt in a melting furnace at high heat.

The nature of the quicklime changes, depending on whether it is made from larger or smaller pieces of limestone or from a mixture of both. If the burnt lime still contains carbonate of lime or has absorbed carbonic acid from the air after a long period of storage, the carbonic acid has a very disadvantageous effect on the melting process, since carbonic acid interrupts the melting process and causes the furnace to clog.

The crushing of the quick lime creates a dust which is harmful to the workers' lungs and even to the vegetation in the vicinity of the plant.
 EMI1.1
the most suitable quality to process into carbide with the heat accumulated during the burning of the limestone in a preferably electric melting furnace.

The accompanying drawing shows in a schematic manner one for carrying out the method

   PATENT. Expectations :
1. A method for the preparation of carbide in continuous operation, characterized in that the carbonate of lime required for the lime-coal mixture in powdered state, mixed with powdered fuel, is first treated in a continuously heated kiln, that'hierauf the burnt kiln charge in the hot The condition is passed in a mixer, there mixed with preheated degassed coal and this mixture is fed to the actual melting furnace of the plant.

Claims (1)

2. A method for the preparation of carbide according to claim 1, characterized in that the coal added to the even fired furnace charge is heated in a preheater which is heated by the exhaust gases from the furnace or the melting furnace.
