<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates to a device for fastening and sealing floating head covers for heat exchangers on the floating tube plate of these heat exchangers.
Such heat exchangers are particularly large in chemical process engineering
Significance when it comes to subsequently using the heat introduced into a first medium, for example for carrying out a chemical reaction, in a useful manner, for example for preheating a second medium. These heat exchangers are closed cylindrical vessels with an inlet and outlet for the first medium, which is guided in this vessel by means of baffles in a zigzag path (so-called jacket side). The second medium is guided in a tube bundle (so-called tube side) arranged inside the boiler and sealed off from the inside of the boiler. One end of the tube bundle is fixedly mounted in the boiler, whereas the other end is mounted in a so-called floating head that is movable relative to the boiler due to the thermal expansion.
This floating head consists of a tube plate that receives the tube ends (so-called floating head plate) and one that is attached to this tube plate
Interiors of the tubes sealing the floating head cover against the inside of the boiler. Here is the density
Connection of the floating head cover to the tube plate is of great importance in order to ensure that the second medium carried in the tube bundle escapes into the first medium or vice versa and thus reliably prevents mutual contamination of the media.
In the previously known versions of such heat exchangers, the floating head covers were fastened to the floating tube plate by means of screw bolts and a split counter ring; the sealing was done by a flat gasket between the tube plate and the floating head cover. The floating head was sealed by tightening the bolts - nuts. The nuts are tightened with pre-calculated torques in order to obtain a screw force determined according to standardized calculation principles. Since the screw friction influences the tightening torque, the elongation of the screw bolts is also measured in order to achieve the contact pressure required for a perfect seal. This procedure is very time consuming.
In addition, even with this complex method, no tight connection can be achieved under all circumstances: The aforementioned calculation bases for the screw force are based on the assumption of an extremely possible operating state, namely the occurrence of the maximum design pressure on the pipe side (second medium) and failure of the pressure on the Shell side (first medium). In this case, the seal is permanently deformed by the force of the bolts. During the further course of operation, other, in some cases completely opposite, pressure and force relationships can occur, so that this connection leaks.
The aim of the invention is to avoid this disadvantage and to create a tight connection between the floating head cover and the tube plate in all operating states. This is achieved according to the invention in the device specified in the introduction in that the floating tube plate is held in an annular slide-over part which, together with a curved disc, forms the floating head cover, the tube plate at its edge facing the tube bundle of the heat exchanger, preferably below 450, bevelled, on which bevel distributed over the circumference of the push-over part and in which screws are supported, wherein a stop for supporting the tube plate is provided on its side facing away from the tube bundle of the heat exchanger on the push-over part,
and that an O-ring seal is provided between the stop and the tube plate. This enables a secure and cost-effective seal, the function of which is not dependent or only slightly dependent on the screw force. The beveling of the tube plate has the additional advantage that construction tolerances can be compensated for.
An advantageous embodiment of the invention is further characterized in that the screws are arranged approximately perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the heat exchanger in the slide-over part and that the front ends of the screws are in the form of a cone or truncated cone with an approximately 450 opening angle. In particular for higher pressures, an embodiment of the invention can also be expedient, which is characterized in that the screws are arranged at an angle of approximately 45 to the longitudinal axis of the heat exchanger in the slide-over part and that the front end faces of the screws facing the bevel of the tube plate are essentially flat are trained.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
For all variants of the device according to the invention, it is particularly advantageous if an annular groove is provided in the stop for receiving the O-ring seal.
The main advantage of the invention is that the fluctuations in the pressures acting on the seal that occur during operation of the heat exchanger between the pipe and shell sides (ie between the first and the second medium) can now be controlled perfectly. The use of an O-ring seal means that the screw and thus the
Flange loading less, because a prestressing force for sealing is not required or only to a small extent; the O-ring seal does not seal through the contact pressure of the screws but independently through the operating pressure acting on it. The O-ring seal also absorbs additional inaccuracies caused by thermal expansion or shrinkage of the material.
The screw bolts, which represent a further weak point and which were previously difficult to handle due to the uncertainty regarding the correct tightening forces, are no longer present in the device according to the invention. The expansion lengths of the fastening and sealing device, which were particularly large in the case of the known screw bolts, are considerably shorter in the device according to the invention, as a result of which the amounts of thermal expansion and
Shrinkage can be significantly reduced.
Overall, the flange connection can be made lighter in diameter and thickness in the device according to the invention, which results in a material saving; it is also possible to use sheet metal instead of expensive forgings as before.
Of the publications listed in the title page, only GB-PS No. 2, 065, 859 refers to a heat exchanger with a floating head or a floating tube plate and thus to the same
Category of heat exchangers as the subject of the invention. The known heat exchanger is, however, set up for at least three flow media and has - although nothing about this
Specific statements made in writing or in drawings are obviously quite conventional
Lid seal on. The publication in question therefore only represents the state of the art on which the invention is based.
GB-PS No. 1, 532, 757 and also FR-PS No. 2, 172. 170 also refer to heat exchangers which have a distant similarity to the construction according to the invention, but in any case no floating head or no floating one Have tube plate. They thus already differ generically from the subject matter of the invention. In both cases, these are types of construction for rather unpressurized heat exchangers, with no concrete statements being made about the details of the sealing of a cover.
The documents also mentioned are still further from the subject of the invention. For example, FR-PS No. 45,944 relates to a heat exchanger with tubular elements - but without a floating head - in which the cover is sealed by means of ring seals, but in a completely different way than in the subject of the invention. In the known case, the cover is acted upon in the center by a central pressure screw, the O-rings are used and squeezed in the manner of a fabric bushing.
AT-PS No. 278876 primarily discloses a bayonet lock at the lower end of an upright heat exchanger - likewise not a floating head heat exchanger - the cover of which - attachment or sealing is obviously designed in a conventional manner. Further details in this regard cannot be found in this publication.
FR-PS No. 2. 404. 187 relates to a heat exchanger with a spiral or. helical tube bundle (apparently for longer dwell times or low throughput quantities) which, in contrast to the object of the invention, is not a floating-head heat exchanger; Nothing is said about the attachment or sealing of the cover. (According to the solution indicated in the drawings, this should be done in a conventional way with screwed flanges and a flat gasket in between).
FR-PS No. 2. 385. 067 relates to a fixed tube heat exchanger (both ends of the tube bundle are fixed), which has nothing to do with the subject of the invention.
In fact, only in the case of a heat exchanger with a floating head cover is there a risk of leaks due to the external pressure-internal pressure stresses, which are particularly
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
drive the system can be very large. This risk is mitigated in a simple and reliable manner by the use of an O-ring seal in accordance with the invention together with the special screw support of the floating tube plate in a slide-over part.
In addition, the construction according to the invention is considerably more compact than the conventional one and, due to the use of a one-piece slide-over part instead of the previously common two-part connecting flanges, is also much easier to assemble.
The invention will now be described in more detail using exemplary embodiments with reference to the drawings. 1 shows a schematic longitudinal sectional view of a heat exchanger in which the device according to the invention can be used, FIG. 2 shows an attachment of the floating head cover according to the prior art in an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of detail "A" from FIG. 1, 3a on a smaller scale and FIG. 3b on a larger scale in a sectional view analogous to FIG. 2 an embodiment of the fastening device according to the invention and FIG. 4 in a sectional view analogous to FIG. 2 another embodiment of the fastening device according to the invention.
The heat exchanger partially shown in Fig. 1 (the middle section is cut out) comprises a cylindrical middle section or jacket --1-- with an inlet --2-- and an outlet --3-- for the first medium Ml, which is in the Inside the middle section --1-- is guided in a zigzag path by means of the deflection plates. On the left end wall in Fig. 1, the middle section --1- is closed off by the stationary tube plate --5--, on the right end wall by the usually curved bottom --6-- of the heat exchanger, which at --7-- am Middle section --1-- is flanged.
The second medium M2 is fed via an inlet --8-- into a pre-chamber --10-- divided by a sheet metal --9--, which in Fig. 1 on the left of the middle part --1-- at --11- - is flanged; This flange --11-- also holds the stationary tube plate --5-- and seals it against the interior of the middle section --1-- and the pre-chamber --10--. thus mainly in the middle section --1-- instead.
The left ends of the tube of the tube bundle --12-- in Fig. 1 are firmly connected to the stationary tube plate --5--, which tube plate --5-- between the flange connection - 11-of the middle part --1 - and pre-chamber --10-- is kept tight.
The right ends of the tubes of the tube bundle --12-- in Fig. 1 are connected to the tube plate --15--, which is axially movable due to the thermal expansion of the tubes (so-called floating tube plate). With this floating tube plate --15-- a so-called floating lid --16 is firmly connected, which is therefore also axially movable with respect to the middle part --1-- and the bottom - of the heat exchanger and together with the floating tube plate --15- - forms the so-called "floating head" of the heat exchanger.
The floating head cover --16-- consists of a curved cover plate and a ring flange --16a-- welded to it, which ring flange --16a-- with a split counter ring --17- by means of the screw bolts only indicated in Fig. L - 18-- is screwed; the floating tube plate - 15 - is tightly clamped between the ring flange --16a-- and the counter ring --17-- and thus the floating head cover --16-- is firmly and sealingly connected to this tube plate --15-- .
2 shows a longitudinal section on an enlarged scale of detail A from FIG. in a version according to the current state of the art. The ring flange --16a-of the floating head cover --16-- is clamped to the split counter ring --17-- using the bolts --18-- together with the associated nuts --18a--; the floating tube plate --15-- is clamped between the counter ring --17-- and the ring flange --16a--. A flat gasket - 19 - is inserted between the floating tube plate - and the ring flange - 16a - to seal the deflection space --13-- against the interior of the heat exchanger. This results in

At the rear end, the screws --21-- are again provided with a shoulder --21b-- for a tool.
The screws --21-- press the tube plate --15-- in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the heat exchanger against a stop in the push-over part --20 '- which here in the form of a shoulder --22'-in the push-over part - 20' -, is thus provided in one piece with the push-over part. In this paragraph --22 '- (or in the opposite surface of the tube plate - 15--) there is again an annular groove --23-- for receiving an O-ring seal --24--. This results in the advantages already explained in connection with FIG. 3.
