Abstract

The invention relates to a process for separating fatty acid ester mixtures consisting of fatty acid esters with monohydric alcohols and fatty acids from natural oils and fats, such as cotton seed oil, coconut oil, arachis oil, olive oil, palm oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, soya oil, corn oil, almond oil, mustard oil, castor oil, fish oil, beef tallow, chicken fat, lard oil and used oils such as frying oils, and mixtures thereof, into constituents of different melting points, characterized by the combination of the process steps in the following sequence: a) a pour point lowering agent, preferably Lubrizol R 5972 from Lubrizol or Edenor R 2661 from Henkel KGaA, is added to the liquid fatty acid ester mixture and stirred; b) the mixture is cooled until turbidity appears due to crystallization of high-melting fatty acid esters; c) the mixture is subjected to after-crystallization; d) the mixture is separated by sedimentation or centrifugation. A low-melting fatty acid ester mixture prepared by the process according to the invention is particularly suitable as fuel for diesel engines for use at low temperatures.
