Description

AT 405 215 BAT 405 215 B

The invention relates to a compass that must be opened for the intended use and can then be closed for protection against damage.

Compasses are known in many different forms and for different purposes, e.g. Ship compasses from DE 198 104 A as well as compasses from CH 193 113 A protected against eddy currents. None of these cases are folding compasses.

A known folding compass is e.g. described in GB 599 112 A; Such a compass typically consists of a disk-shaped housing made of non-magnetic material and has a compass needle, which is covered on the upper side with a transparent protective disk, and a protective cover that can be opened and closed. The compass needle is arranged essentially centrally and axially in the housing.

A disadvantage of folding compasses of this type is their comparatively low mechanical strength, in particular against impact and pressure, and their aesthetically clunky appearance in technical terms.

From US 1 275 979 A and US 1 945 713 A compasses are also known which are accommodated in a pen or a pen sleeve and opened for use by pulling them out of the pen or the pen sleeve or by placing the compass needle in a displayable state Need to become. A disk-shaped housing and thus the possibility of a robust construction is not provided, and the external appearance is limited to that of a pen or a pen sleeve.

The object of the invention is to provide a folding compass, the mechanical strength, in particular resistance to impact and pressure, in the range of material strength of the massive non-magnetic and e.g. folding compass made of titanium or a titanium alloy can be increased, and the exterior of which can be designed in such a way that the compass is also suitable as a piece of jewelry.

This object is achieved according to the invention by a folding compass with the features mentioned in claim 1. Preferred embodiments are defined in claims 2-11.

The disc-shaped body of the compass can e.g. circular disc-shaped, polygonal, oval, square, hexagonal or in any other way disc-shaped and consists of non-magnetic material, preferably a high-strength and corrosion-resistant metal such as titanium.

Generally, " disc-shaped " here a flat and essentially planar structure is understood, in which the ratio between the largest and smallest dimensions in the plane of the main surface is in the range from 1: 1 to 1: 2. It is essential according to the invention that the axis about which the compass needle can be rotated lies practically in a radial plane of the disk-shaped compass body, i.e. not in the axial direction as with conventional folding compasses, and that the compass needle can only be freely rotated when the compass is open.

The disk-shaped compass body has a first and a second disk segment; the second pane segment is formed by two practically congruent outer pane segments and an inner pane segment, which is preferably essentially identical to the outer pane segments; the inner disk segment is perforated at least in the area of the compass needle, and the outer disk segments are pivotally attached to the lower disk segment in such a way that they lie against the inner disk segment when the folding compass is closed and, when opened, form the display surface for the display direction of the then freely rotatable compass needle.

According to a preferred embodiment, the folding compass has a preferably circular and centrally arranged opening in the disc-shaped housing, which e.g. is formed by an annular insert, which is preferably made of a material which can be distinguished in color from the outer panes, e.g. Gold, bronze or brass. Such an opening offers both technical, practical and aesthetic advantages, as explained below.

The ring-shaped insert can be provided with a preferably needle-like bearing for the compass needle; the inner disc segment preferably forms a nose which is connected to an upper guide part of the compass needle, e.g. the nose just mentioned, forms a sufficiently narrow gap to limit the movement of the compass needle in the radial direction so that it is secured against falling out. The compass needle is preferably essentially band-shaped and curved in the central region, preferably also in accordance with the curvature of the annular insert. The distance between the lower surface of the compass needle and the adjacent parts of the housing is preferably practically constant.

2To secure the closed state against unintentional opening, each outer pane segment can have a pin-like projection and the inner pane segment can be slotted in the region of the projection of the nose to form a spring-like holder for the pin-like projections. 2nd

The inner surfaces of the outer disk segments preferably have semicircular recesses, the depth of which is practically the same as the difference between the width of the compass needle and the thickness of the inner disk segment.

In general, the mechanical compressive strength of the disk-shaped housing when folded together can be made practically the same size as the compressive strength of an equally large solid disk made of the non-magnetic material. The dimensions of a folding compass according to the invention are typically in the range of 20-40 mm outside diameter and a thickness of 3-8 mm.

Es zeigen:A preferred embodiment of the folding compass according to the invention is explained with reference to the accompanying drawings. Show it:

The compass designated by the reference number 1 in the figures is shown in perspective in FIG. 1 and in an opened, i.e. shown ready for operation. For better clarity, the illustration in FIG. 1 is enlarged by approximately 4 to 5 times a typical diameter of a compass according to the invention. 25 The disk-shaped housing 10 consists essentially of non-magnetic and preferably metallic material, such as in particular titanium or non-magnetic titanium alloys with a matt, e.g. sent, or polished finish and is preferably generally circular disc-shaped. It goes without saying that a circular design of the housing 12 is not functionally critical per se, as long as a sufficiently large circle is available for the rotation of the compass needle 11, i.e. can be enclosed by the 30 disc.

The housing 10 has a first or " lower " Disc segment 12, which can be constructed in one piece or in several parts, and a multi-part second or " upper " Disc segment 13 (this transfer number is only shown in the closed representations of Fig.lC and IE). As can be seen in FIG. 1, the second pane segment has two outer pane segments 131, 132 of the same size, which 35 are connected to the first or lower pane segment 12 via hinge-like linkages (only the two front linkages 101, 102 can be seen in FIG. 1) that they can be pivoted by 90 * from the closed state (shown in FIGS. 1C and 1E) to the ready-opened state of FIGS. 1, 1A, 1B and 10 and out of this again into the closed state. 40 The relative terms " above " or " below " for the first and second disk segments relate to the functional position of compass 1 shown in FIG. 1. Both disk segments are preferably provided with decorations on the outside. For example, the outside lying in front in FIG. 1 (see FIG. B. be decorated with a compass rose and have a circumferential groove 121 which delimits the outer edge with symbols of the cardinal points. The other outside (Fig. 45 1E) has no or another decoration in the inner field as shown and shows, for example, the division of the circle into 360 * in the surrounding edge. It goes without saying that the type of exterior decoration is not critical and can be freely selected.

Preferably, however, the circular division of the one outer side (FIG. 1E) of the compass 1 corresponds to the circular division on the inner surfaces 151, 152 of the upper disc segments 131, 132, since this, in the opened state, together with the boundary surface 120 of the lower disc segment 12 Form the display field for the compass needle 11.

Es kann aber auch ein aus mehr als drei Schichten bestehender oder aber (bei genügend genauer Passung der abklappbaren Aussenteile) ein einstückig blockartiges Aussehen des scheibenförmigen Kör- 3The first or lower disc segment 12 is preferably formed in one piece, but can also consist of several layers and is preferably formed uniformly on the circumference of the disc, so that the grooves 55 preferably formed between the parts of the second or upper disc segment 13 are also formed on the first or lower disc segment 12 are. The side view (not shown in the drawing) then shows the view of a disc-shaped body consisting of three layers. However, a disc-shaped body consisting of more than three layers or (if the foldable outer parts fit sufficiently) can have a one-piece block-like appearance

Claims (11)

AT 405 215 B pers 10 gewählt werden. AT 405 215 B pers 10 can be selected. The middle inner part of the second or upper disk segment 13 of the disk-shaped body 10 is formed by the bow-shaped inner disk segment (133), which, as shown and preferably can be composed of a single layer or of several layers, and has an opening, as is e.g. is defined by the approximately semicircular inner edge 134 of the segment 133 and must in any case ensure the free rotation of the compass needle 11. The inner disk segment preferably forms a nose 19, the free lower end of which does not just touch the guide element 119 of the compass needle 11 in the normal working position, but limits the movement of the compass needle in the radial direction when the compass 1 is tilted or reversed and thus prevents it from falling out. In the area of the upper end of the nose 19, for example, a round recess 191 is arranged, which merges into a slot 192 and is dimensioned such that it can receive the two retaining pins 193, 194, for example with a semicircular cross section, and hold them resiliently in order to keep the compass 1 closed secure against unintentional opening. The disc-shaped body 10 is preferably provided with a central opening 14 which can serve to receive a fastening cord or chain. For aesthetic and manufacturing reasons, it is expedient to form the opening 14 by an annular insert 18 which can be pressed into the disk-shaped body 10, screwed in or connected in some other way. The insert 18 is preferably distinguishable in color and / or texture from the disk-shaped body 10, e.g. by being made of a different colored metal than the body 10, e.g. made of gold, brass, bronze, platinum or the like. The insert 18 is expediently provided with a needle-like bearing 181 (FIG. 1D) for the compass needle 11 on its outer region, which extends (in the closed state) between the upper outer disk segments. The latter consists, in a manner known per se, of permanent magnetic material and is preferably designed like a band, as indicated in FIG. 1. It should be noted that the position of the compass needle in the different figures is somewhat different and is chosen so that a simple representation is possible. The shape of the compass needle 11 is also adapted to the shape of the adjacent parts of disk segments and the insert 18 such that the distance or gap between the lower surfaces of the compass needle and the respectively adjacent housing parts is approximately constant. In particular, it is expedient to choose this distance such that the tilting of the compass needle when the compass housing is tilted, in particular in the closed state, is primarily limited by the abutment of the lower surface of the compass needle 11 and only secondarily by the free end of the nose 19. The boundary line 123 (Rg. 1E) between the first or lower pane segment 12 and the second or upper pane segment 13 is offset from the theoretical center line by the thickness of the two outer pane segments 131, 132, so that after they have been opened, the respective outer surface of the segments 131, 132 approximates lies in the theoretical center line of the entire disc-shaped body 10. However, this is also only a preferred and not a critical condition, but is dependent on the selected geometry and the desired appearance. Within the scope of the invention, numerous modification options are apparent to a person skilled in the art. So the different parts of the compass can each be made in one piece or in several pieces or in multiple layers, e.g. by means of plated metal layers made of non-magnetic and preferably metallic materials, which can give the respective parts a correspondingly different appearance. For example, the compass rose, the compass symbols and the division of the circle are formed by corresponding depressions or projections and / or are made from correspondingly distinguishable non-magnetic materials. Furthermore, the parts of the display surface which are visible in the opened state of the compass can be dimensioned such that the compass needle has practically no freedom of movement laterally in the folded state of the compass. In addition to or instead of the central housing opening, a fastening means, e.g. an eyelet may be provided. Furthermore, the external appearance of the compass can be designed in such a way that the compass has the appearance of an ancient or contemporary coin or medal, in particular made of precious metal, such as gold. 1. folding compass (1) with a disc-shaped body (10) made of non-magnetic material and a compass needle (11), characterized in that the body has a first (12) and a second (13) disc segment, the second disc segment two has laterally foldable segment parts 4 AT 405 215 B (131.132) and a bow-shaped inner disk segment (133) arranged between them and the compass needle around an axis lying in the plane of the bow-shaped inner disk segment (133) and radially in the disk-shaped body (10), but only in the unfolded position State of the foldable segment parts (131, 132), is rotatable. 2.
