Beim Gebrauch der Vorrichtung wird das Gewicht 5 auf die Oberfläche der zu messenden Haut oder dergl aufgelegt und der Reissstift auf dem freien Ende der Stange 9 wird dann ah den Aussenlinien, Kanten oder Umrissen der Haut oder des Felles entlang geführt und veranlasst dadurch die Drehung des Rades 8 und damit seiner Welle, welche ihrerseits wieder den Zählmechanismus oder Anzeiger betätigt. Der Reissstift folgt den Aussenlinie des zu messenden Gegenstandes und der Anzeiger zeigt bei der Rückkehr des Reissstiftes in den Ausgangspunkt die Anzahl der in der Haut oder dergl. enthaltenen Quadratfuss und Bruchteile derselben an.
Der Zählmechanismus oder Anzeiger ist in der für Flächenmesser bekannten Weise eingerichtet. Als Konstante ist ihm nämlich jene Kreisfläche zugrunde gelegt, welche innerhalb pines vom Arm 9 (vom Reissstift bis zum Radmittel) als Halbmesser beschriebenen Kreises liegt.
Wird'also mit dem Reissstift entlang eines Kreisbogens gefahren, der einen Teil eines solchen Kreises bildet, dann findet keine Betätigung des Anzeigers statt. Hingegen werden Flächenteile der zu messenden Haut, die ausserhalb dieses Kreises liegen zur Konstante addiert und solche welche innerhalb liegen von der Konstante subtrahiert.
Diese Gesamtsumme wird dann direkt an der Stelle angezeigt, an welcher der Messende die Vorrichtung handhabt, worauf der Anzeiger durch einfaches Drücken auf den Hebel 27 wieder leicht in Nullstellung zurückgeführt werden kann, ohne am Rad 8 oder dem Zählmechanismus selbst manipulieren zu müssen.

When using the device, the weight 5 is placed on the surface of the skin to be measured or the like and the drawing pin on the free end of the rod 9 is then guided along the outer lines, edges or outlines of the skin or the skin and thereby causes the rotation of the Wheel 8 and thus its shaft, which in turn operates the counting mechanism or indicator. If the drawing pen is thus driven along an arc which forms part of such a circle, the indicator is not actuated. On the other hand, parts of the area of the skin to be measured that lie outside this circle are added to the constant and those that lie within are subtracted from the constant.
This total is then displayed directly at the point at which the person measuring the device, whereupon the indicator can easily be returned to zero position by simply pressing the lever 27 without having to manipulate the wheel 8 or the counting mechanism itself.
