Process for the production of bleach-free oil paints.

The present invention is directed to a method for producing oil paints.
Up to now, oil paints, especially paints, the liquid component of which is mainly linseed oil, could only be produced by adding white lead to the linseed oil.

Despite numerous efforts directed against the use of white lead, which are justified by its harmfulness, it is still regarded as the best material for oil paint manufacture and has not yet been displaced by any other.

The causes to which the white lead owes the desired properties have been repeatedly investigated, and among other things Stas comments on this as follows: "The drying power and the elasticity of white lead are ascribed to a single cause, the connection of linseed oil with part of the lead compound of white lead, which has the following composition:

     2 Pb CO3 + Pb (OH) 3 ".
 EMI1.1
Stus repeated and drew the same conclusions from this, namely that the linseed oil dissolves part of the Pb (OH) 2, whereby a real lead paste is formed, which is one more or more of the mixture of Pb COg and Pb (OH) 2 not dissolved in the oil less firm consistency is given and effected. that the mixture does not harden like the other colors and therefore also. h not dusty.

To find a substance. which gives the colors the same physical properties as white lead, without its adverse chemical properties. Toxicity, darkening,
 EMI1.2
found. that nothing else but magnesium is suitable. Tests have shown that all magnesium compounds dissolve in linseed oil in greater or lesser amounts.

If color bodies are rubbed with linseed oil in which a magnesium compound is dissolved, the oil not containing more of the magnesium compound than it can dissolve, then colors are obtained which have all the advantageous physical properties of the white lead in the same or have even higher mass, but are free of the harmful chemical properties of the same. For the purposes of the present invention, all magnesium compounds are quite equally useful and can be incorporated into the ijein oil at any stage of color generation.

So you can go with them
 EMI1.3
of magnesium compounds only limited to the small amount (approx. 1 to 3%) that the oil can dissolve.
