B e i s p i el. 100 Teile rohkresol (etwa 60 Prozent m-Kresol enthaltend) werden mit 1 : l0 Teilen Sulfurylchlorid in bekannter Weise chloriert.

EMI1.1
Chlorine m-cresol (1: 3: 6), dissolved in certain substances, has proven to be an antiseptic that is far superior to all other phenols in terms of disinfectant effect (Centr. F. Bakt., Vol. 44, No. 23). It is therefore of great technical importance to have a process to produce this substance as smoothly as possible and from the cheapest possible starting material. In the production of chlorine-m-cresol on pure cresol, either by chlorination according to the method of DRP No. 90487 (Kalle & Co.) or by using sulfuryl chloride according to Peratoner (G. 28, 1, 213), the desired substance different isomers or more highly chlorinated products also of an oily nature, which prevent the complete crystallization of the chlorine-m-cresol, whereby the yield is significantly reduced.
If, however, the technical mixture of 7n- and p-cresol is used instead of m-cresol, chlorine-p-cresol is formed in addition to the isomers, and in such amounts that chlorine-m-cresol is not separated at all more is done.
It has now been found that chlorine-m-cresol can be separated from the isomers and the chlorine-p-cresol formed at the same time. when the chlorinated m-cresol or raw cresol is sulfurized. While chlorine-m-cresol is converted into sulfonic acid, it is striking that chlorine-p-cresol remains unchanged and can therefore be easily separated off. The chlorine-m-cresol in the form of its sulphonic acid can easily be separated from the isomers in that the sulphonic acid of the chlorine-m-cresol forms particularly sparingly soluble salts. Likewise, the separation of the chlorine-cresote from the isomers by the sulphonic acid takes place advantageously because of the different solubility of their sodium salts.
The sulfo group is split off from the sulfonic acid or its salts by known methods, e.g. B. by heating with strong acids.
For example, 100 parts of crude cresol (containing about 60 percent m-cresol) are chlorinated with 1: 10 parts of sulfuryl chloride in a known manner. That freed from the gases
The reaction product is heated to 1000 ° C. for 4 hours with twice the amount of concentrated sulfuric acid. The sulfurization mixture is poured into water and, after the unsulfurized oil, which mainly contains chlorine-p-cresol, has separated out, table salt is added, which causes the sodium salt of chlorine-m-cresol sulfonic acid to separate out.
That with water, possibly also with fuel. The washed-out sodium salt is heated with sulfuric acid 1) at about 14c) ') C, the sulfo group being split off. The chlorine-m-cresol, which is blown over with steam, is completely pure after recrystallization from ligroin. If, instead of the raw cresol containing 60 percent m-cresol, a higher percent or almost pure M-cresol is used, it is advisable to allow the product to crystallize and to sulfurize the residue, which still contains ample amounts of chlorine-m-cresol .
Since the sulfonic acid of chlorine-m-cresol can easily be obtained in crystallized form by pouring the sulfurization product into a little water, it is also possible through
Purification and decomposition of the free sulfonic acid to obtain pure chlorine-m-kresel.
