 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the manufacture of quartz glass articles.

The subject of the present invention is a process for the production of quartz glass objects, according to which, for the purpose of good distribution, powdered quartz is distributed on a corresponding to the shape of the. mstellenden object formed core made of quartz glass is scattered and this powder is combined or melted together by heating the core and the powder located on its surface.

The temperature required for melting is generated by electric arcs or blower burners, which act on the outside of the surface of the preferably previously heated quartz glass core and thus directly on the scattered quartz powder.

According to the present process, a completely uniform coating is obtained. To achieve this, it is also advisable to rotate or move the quartz glass core to and fro while the heat is applied. to give it a combined turning and to-and-fro movement.

The quartz particles can be added to the core in any manner, e.g. B. by pipes or special supply devices provided for this purpose or by one or both electrodes, which are then pierced for this purpose.

If on the core by melting the quartz particles a sufficient amount of
 EMI1.1
processed in any other way required.

The present method differs from the known method, in that an electrically conductive body is embedded in a mass consisting of granular quartz and is then heated by the electric current to such an extent that the surrounding quartz grains are brought to melt, advantageously in that the The resulting coating is extremely uniform and the excess of the known methods that the malleable quartz mass produced on the periphery of the inserted body flows downwards is avoided.

The drawings show in section, for example, embodiments of devices for performing the method according to the invention.

1 shows a device in which the quartz particles fall on the core in the presence of an electric arc. Fig. 2 illustrates an embodiment in which the supply of the quartz particles to the core is through one of the electrodes
 EMI1.2
   Heater.

In all figures, the same parts are denoted by the same reference numbers.

The furnace (Fig. I) is provided with electrodes 2, which are mounted in holders 3, which are shifted along the guides 4 on the base plate 5 in their longitudinal directions
 EMI1.3
of the tube 8 pushes forward and conveys them to the furnace, in which they fall onto the core 6.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

The device shown in FIG. 2 is essentially the same as that in FIG. 1, only the quartz particles are conveyed to the heated body through a tube 13 and an axial bore 14 of one of the electrodes. Of course, the quartz particles could also be fed simultaneously through both electrodes in the same way.

3 shows a similar device for supplying the quartz particles, but here the heat is generated by a blower horn 1.5, which supplies the heat required to melt the quartz particles on the heated core 6. The core 6 can here, as in the other cases, be rotated or moved back and forth in its longitudinal direction or maintained in any combined movement.

   PATENT CLAIMS:].
