Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

  Method of hardening and waterproofing animal skin pores.

   It is already known to make leather resistant and waterproof by impregnating it with celluloid solutions. According to another method, the raw skin is first treated in a bath of a dehydrating agent (glycerine), then in a bath of a suitable oil and finally made waterproof with a rubber solution.

   The subject of the present invention is a method which, although it also uses means known per se, surpasses the known methods in that z. B. can produce a leather substitute that resembles the horn in appearance and also has its advantageous properties. Due to its elasticity and great strength, it is not only suitable for making suitcases, boats, military items, but also as a replacement for whalebone or horn. Another excellent property is its great electrical insulation capacity.

   According to the present method, after the skin has been fleshed and depilated in a known manner, it is hardened in a bath of 2 parts amyl acetate and 1 part acetone, in which it remains for about 48 hours for this purpose. It then receives a coating of celluloid dissolved in acetone and amyl acetate; these three substances are used in equal parts. The solution can be applied with a brush.

   In order to protect the celluloid coating so that it is no longer soluble, the lance is finally treated for about 24 hours in a bath made up of 1 part 9% alcohol and 2 parts white shellac.
