Process for the production of alcohol from sulphite waste liquor.

As is known, the waste eye of the sulphite cellulose process contains certain types of sugar that can be converted into ethyl alcohol by fermentation. In order to carry out this fermentation, it is absolutely necessary that the free sulfur dioxide present in the liquor is removed, as it acts as a poison on the yeast and prevents or delays fermentation or prevents complete fermentation. It is already known to neutralize the lye using lime, limestone or lime-containing substances for this purpose.

The lye also contains some sulfur dioxide, which is easily bound in organic compounds with lime. The sulfur dioxide of these compounds cannot be removed by neutralization with lime or the like, but follows the apparently neutralized lye to the fermentation vats. Here, these organic compounds are replaced by the acids developed during fermentation, such as lactic acid. decomposes, whereby the sulfur dioxide is released and has an inhibiting effect on the fermentation process. In and of themselves, these sulfur dioxide precursors also have an inhibiting effect on the fermentation process.

The aim of the invention is to avoid this inconvenience in that the organic compounds mentioned, in which the sulfur dioxide is slightly bound, are decomposed during the first treatment (neutralization) of the liquor, i.e. before the fermentation process, the sulfur dioxide being converted into others for the Fermentation process harmless compounds are transferred. According to this invention, this is done by adding an ammonium salt, preferably ammonium sulfate, to the waste eye.

As a result of the relatively strong dissociation of the ammonium sulfate in the solution, it reacts easily with the easily decomposable organic compounds mentioned, the negative ions of the same combine with the lime of the compounds mentioned to form calcium sulfate,

The ammonium sulfate can precede the lye. During or after the usual neutralization by means of lime, limestone or the like. Are added. In the first-mentioned case, the sulfur dioxide released by the ammonium sulfate is dissolved in the lye and its content of free sulfur dioxide is increased in order to be neutralized later when the lye is treated in a suitable manner with lime, limestone or the like. If the ammonium sulfate is added at the same time as the neutralization by means of lime or the like, the sulfur dioxide is gradually bound as it is released.

The most suitable method, however, is to add the ammonium sulphate only after the free sulfur dioxide has been neutralized in a known manner by adding lime, the sulfur dioxide released later by a previously used excess of
 EMI1.3
To bind sulfur dioxide by means of limestone (calcium carbonate), since the latter does not react at all or at least insignificantly with the ammonium sulphate used to split the organic compounds.

A lye treated in this way gives a considerably higher yield of ethyl alcohol a) s in fermentation when neutralized with lime or the like alone.
