Ausbeute an letzterem 18 kg, also quantitativ.

can be separated from the chloride and therefore not only represents a reduction in the yield, but also a contamination of the product. Thus, the method of the invention represents a significant advance over the known method, according to which the acid is heated with PCg in a flat vessel or without any further addition in a closed vessel. The hydrogen chloride can either be pressed into the autoclave as such, preferably at the beginning of the reaction, or substances which develop hydrogen chloride in the further course of the reaction are added to the reaction mixture.
This purpose can be achieved in the simplest possible way by adding some water to the reaction mixture and, of course, also adding an excess of P Cl3 sufficient to decompose this water quantum. The water is expediently placed in a separate vessel which is placed open in the autoclave, whereupon, with the autoclave closed, the water is allowed to flow to the reaction mixture by tilting it. Given the slowness with which water reacts with P CL, if the autoclave is filled quickly, the water can also be poured into the reaction mixture without further ado, or the organic acid can simply be used in a moist state, which often also means a cheaper price for the starting material enables.
At first glance, these measures look quite absurd, since in the previous regulations for the preparation of acid chlorides one found, on the contrary, the statement that the starting material must be used as free of water as possible.
Example 1: 15 kg of monochloroacetic acid and 12 kg of phosphorus trichloride are mixed, 200 g of water are added and the mixture is heated to about 1500 in the autoclave. P2 03 separates out in solid form, so that the liquid chloroacetyl chloride can easily be separated from it. Yield of the latter 18 kg, i.e. quantitative.
Example 2: 15 kg of glacial acetic acid with 20/0 water content and 17 PCJL; are heated to 80 in an autoclave. Here, too, the liquid acetyl chloride can be easily separated from the solid phosphorus trioxide and can be obtained in theoretical yield (19 kg).
