 EMI1.1

 EMI1.1

The invention relates to a method for extracting iron and steel directly from the ores using a circulating gas heated by electric flame arcs as a reducing agent. Compared to known methods of this type, the present method is particularly characterized in that the electrically heated gas is passed through a container, forehearth or the like serving for the complete or partial preparation of the iron before it is used as a reducing agent. Furthermore, according to the invention, the most economical possible interaction of Feue ungshitze and electrical heat is brought about by specially supplied upper heat to the upper end of the shaft.

If the entire melting and reduction heat of the charging is to be carried out electrically, about 13 HP-year per ton of iron is required for this. If a larger part of this amount of energy is now supplied in the form of combustion heat at the upper end of the shaft furnace, a corresponding amount of energy is saved in the flame arc furnace, which is used to heat the gas (at the highest temperatures, the electrical energy is worthwhile, while am to one certain temperature limit the firing is cheaper). The arrangement in question is, however, only possible in certain cases. where coal and ore are
 EMI1.2

The method is to be explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing, which schematically shows the arrangement of the individual apparatus in a furnace system suitable for carrying out the method.
 EMI1.3
Centrifugal or other fan E, E, E electric flame arc furnaces and F a steel furnace similar to a forehearth arranged between the flame arc furnace and the shaft furnace.

The cheap gases used for reduction are produced in generator B from cheap coals. This generator is arranged as close to the shaft furnace A as possible and can preferably be manufactured according to Mond's system or the like, with all contaminating substances being removed from the gases. The pure gases obtained in this way are driven through the flame arc furnaces E by means of the fan D, where the required amount of heat is supplied to them, after which they pass through the steel furnace or forehearth F, which is arranged directly in front of the shaft furnace A.

In this forehearth, in which the iron coming from the shaft furnace is completely or partially finished, the hot gases sweep over the surface of the iron bath and thereby supply the bath with the heat required for steel preparation. The temperature above the steel bath can be increased even more by supplying air.

From the forehearth they go into the shaft furnace J, where they bring about the reduction of the ore and the smelting of it, and from the upper end of the shaft furnace the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

The carbon dioxide formed in the process is transferred directly to generator B. At the appropriate point (after the fan), gas is also taken for the supply of the aforementioned "top heat" in order to be supplied to the feed (e.g. at X).

The carbon dioxide fed into the generator, together with water vapor, helps to keep the temperature low during combustion in the generator, so that as little as possible of the nitrogen content of the fuel is lost. The combustion temperature is kept at the correct level by the fact that the carbon dioxide coming from the shaft furnace has an approximately suitable temperature. Control of the temperature from the outside is expediently carried out by supplying a small amount of oxygen, so that completely nitrogen-free reducing gas can then be obtained.

The shaft furnace A is charged with iron ores (possibly also with a small amount of coal for the coal up to about 1% and to compensate for the effect of the carbonic acid which may be withdrawn with the reducing gases). In addition, the coal is expediently carried out by blowing coal powder (or crude petroleum) into the gas in front of the shaft furnace, thus in the steel furnace. If the process is carried out in such a way that almost completely pure iron is obtained, a small coal shaft can expediently be installed in front of the ore shaft in order to produce the coal and the effect of the carbonic acid and
To compensate for the water vapor content in the gas.

All masonry parts of the furnace system are set up as far as possible in such a way that they can be replaced during operation, and two units of the electric flame arc furnaces E and the forehearth F are arranged in such a way that a coherent furnace system is created by switching on reserve gas lines can be used while the other system is being bricked up.

In the forehearth F, in which the complete or partial final treatment takes place, the heat is supplied, as already mentioned, by means of the gases coming from the flame arc furnaces. During the final treatment in the forehearth, the iron can be drained from the shaft furnace directly through the tap hole T into a special container. The steel finished in the forehearth is drained into molds or fed to an electric exhaust furnace.

A jacket is arranged around the shaft furnace A as well as the upper parts of the forehearth 3 F and the flame arc furnaces E, through which the gases coming from the washing devices C1, C, (? 'Flow before they pass through the fan D into the furnace E be introduced.

Where there is no regeneration of the carbon dioxide withdrawn from the shaft, it is blown alternately through ordinary regeneration chambers arranged in front of the front deck F, as is the case with ordinary Siemens steel furnaces.

The details of the method described can of course be changed within wide limits. So can the same z. B. can also be carried out in the following way:
The ore is not completely reduced in the shaft furnace, and the iron runs down into the forehearth with a little mixture of oxide. The bath located in this forehearth is then to be regarded as a bath melted down in a customary Siemens furnace and mixed with ore or otherwise oxidized and is treated as such in a known manner, brought to the desired carbon content and cast in ingots or else if a special quality is to be produced, fed into a special electric degassing furnace.
