Wooden barrel with an inner, dense metal coating.

The invention relates to a wooden barrel with an inner, dense metal coating.

It is already known to line barrels with an inner sheet metal covering, but such a covering never lies firmly on the wooden wall of the barrel and the slightest damage to the covering or a soldering point results in the liquid coming behind the covering and spoiling .

According to the present invention, a metal coating, which is firmly connected to the wooden wall, is produced in a much simpler way on the inner wall of the barrel instead of the pitch coating that has been customary up to now.

A metal spraying process known per se is used to produce a drum with a metal coating according to the invention. According to this method, for example, metal in a liquid state is sprayed onto the wood surface by means of compressed air through an atomizing nozzle. The metal molecules drill into the pores of the wood and cover the same with a dense coating of any desired thickness. This coating is firmly connected to the wood and can no longer be removed without destroying the wood wall.

To produce such a coating, a method can also be used, according to which powdery metal particles are spun at such a speed that the metal particles, when they hit the surface to be coated, acquire such a plasticity that is sufficient to cause the particles to weld together, for formation a coherent and homogeneous metallic coating layer. The metal must be sprayed onto the wooden wall from very close.

It is therefore not appropriate to introduce the same into the same through openings in the barrel, but the barrel must be dismantled. The individual staves and floors are provided with a metal coating on the inside and on the abutting surfaces like normal pieces of wood and then put back together again. It is advisable to apply the metal coating a little thicker to the joint surfaces. When the tires are being driven, the metal layers at the abutment surfaces are pressed firmly against one another and also form an excellent sealant. The wooden surfaces on the abutting edges therefore no longer need to be worked on exactly as before with these barrels.

Barrels with such a metal coating are to be preferred to picket barrels in every respect. The metal coating never cracks, never needs to be renewed and does not give off any taste. These barrels can be cleaned with hot water and steam.
