Solder powder for brazing cast iron.
The known means with which the fracture surfaces of cast iron are made suitable for soldering together with hard solder, consist of iron powder, copper oxide, which supplies the oxygen necessary for burning the graphite crystals, and borax, which melts with the oxides on the metal surface to form double borates and thereby the Oxides removed.
According to the invention, the production of the soldering powder is significantly simplified in that only one salt is added to the iron powder, which both supplies the oxygen required for burning the uraphite crystals and removes the oxides. This salt is sodium perborate, which only releases oxygen when heated and is thereby reduced to the well-known borax.
The proportion of the ingredients is 0 # 5 to 1 # 5 parts by weight of sodium perborate per 100 parts by weight of iron powder. For use, the powder is made into a thick paste with passer, which is applied to the broken cast iron surfaces previously cleaned with hydrochloric acid, which are then exposed to the red heat. The further method using braze is well known.
