Process for achieving a smooth and even distillation in the production of nitric acid.

When removing nitric acid from nitric acid with sulfuric acid or another inorganic acid suitable for this purpose, it is of great importance for regular abortion, as well as for the speed of the operation, that the nitric acid used is soaked from the beginning takes place as completely as possible. Most difficulties and malfunctions in the production of nitric acid arise from the fact that nitric lumps form in the retort, which are only broken up at a higher temperature and then suddenly cause a very strong reaction each time the putty is more or less loosened.

Very often it happens that the pumped-up liquid does not dissolve at all and then clogs the retort when the bisulphate is drained and usually first has to be released by adding more propellant acid. This time-consuming operation naturally greatly reduces the performance of the apparatus.

These inconveniences can now be eliminated if the saltpetre is given a shape before it is introduced into the retort, which enables it to be quickly saturated with acid. The best way to do this is to press it with the help of a briquette machine into a gravel shape with a side length of about 2 to 3 cm. Briquetting the saltpetre does not cause any difficulties, since it easily agglomerates. An even quieter expulsion of the nitric acid is achieved if a little sulfuric acid or bisulfate is added to nitric acid before it is briquetted. These saltpeter briquettes can also be used safely in systems where the retort is still hot during charging, e.g.

   B. in the bad system, after the acid are entered, so that melting or sintering on the hot retort wall is impossible.
