<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

   The invention relates to a method for measuring the consumption of at least one item of equipment of a motor or work machine, the consumption of the respective item of equipment being determined from a measurement of marked portions of at least one item of equipment on an output side of the machine, furthermore a method for measuring oil consumption of internal combustion engines, in particular engines that work according to the Otto or diesel principle or a combination of these processes, comprising the admixture of a non-radioactive substance detectable in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine in the lubricant of the internal combustion engine, branching off of at least a partial flow of the exhaust gas the internal combustion engine,

   Afterburning of any still unburned portions in the withdrawn partial stream and determination of the concentration of that substance in the withdrawn partial stream of the exhaust gas, as well as an operating medium for use in such a method or in particular a lubricant for internal combustion engines, in particular for those engines which after the Otto - or diesel principle or a combination of these processes, consisting mainly of hydrocarbon compounds of different fractions, for use in such processes.

   The oil consumption measurement methods previously used in trial operations can basically be divided into two groups. On the one hand, the oil quantity difference can be determined by weighing or volume measurement, or the used oil quantity can be determined directly by detecting lubricating oil components or marking substances (tracers) in the exhaust gas.

   The volume and weight methods, which generally work discontinuously, have the disadvantage that there are large variations in measured values. This phenomenon must be kept within limits due to very long measuring times. Automatic oil consumption measuring methods that measure continuously have also been developed.

   The known disadvantages of these conventional methods, especially long measuring times, led to the development of tracer measuring methods more than 40 years ago. All these marking methods have in common that an indicator is added to the engine oil or is already contained in a known quantity (additives), which tracer can be quantitatively detected in the exhaust gas.

   Regardless of the detection method, the markers are subject to the requirements that they should not be destroyed by the temperatures in the combustion chamber of the engine, nor may they deposit in the engine compartment or in the exhaust system, nor evaporate prematurely, and the determined tracer consumption must do so actual oil consumption. In addition, they should not change the oil properties - especially its lubricating properties. So far, all of the above requirements have not been met with any of the conventional methods. All metallic elements that can be used as markers are deposited as oxides or as high-melting salts undefined in the engine compartment or in the exhaust system.

   The same applies to most non-metallic markers, since they would form high-melting salts in gasoline and diesel oil with the metallic elements - such as lead, barium, calcium, zinc. Attempts to measure oil consumption using flame photometry or spectral analysis failed because the additive components measured in the exhaust gas were not a measure of the actual amount of oil consumed.

   Non-radioactive tracers can either directly (eg for the substance pyrene) or via their reaction products (eg for SO2) in the exhaust tract - depending on the process - be recorded online. In the S02 method, as described in SAE Paper 920652, the entire engine and, above all, the fuel must be sulfur-free in order to be able to clearly assign the measured SO2 to the lubricating oil.

   The isotope methods using radioactive substances have a long tradition - in the development of oil consumption measurement methods. With radioactive labeling (e.g. tritium, bromine, 14C, ...) the activity of the reaction products (e.g. T20, HBr; C02, ...) of the respective tracer is measured in the engine exhaust. Above all, the tritium measurement method has prevailed. As a tracer, the soft 3H emitter is introduced into the engine oil instead of the 1H element in an exchange process (e.g. according to Wilzbach). The use of radioactive tracers results in a considerable expenditure on equipment. Radiation protection measures must also be taken.

   The legal restrictions regarding radiation protection will be tightened in the near future

<Desc / Clms Page number 2>

be relaxed, so that the use of radioactive tracers and the associated effort can therefore no longer be used sensibly.

   Two methods that have been developed recently do without the use of radioactive tracers or the aforementioned markings with the known disadvantages. The pyrene tracer method according to DE 198 32 194 A1 uses an aromatic compound to mark the engine oil, which connection should remain unchanged when leaving the combustion chamber, and by means of a laser mass spectrometer (which, with a laser wavelength of 266 nm, specifically for highly selective detection this aromatic compound was designed) is detected as a measure of the oil consumption. So-called "direct oil emission measurement methods" do not add a tracer and use a modified EIMS to try to detect unburned oil consumption components (heavy HCs that can be assigned to the lubricating oil) in the exhaust gas.

   The pyrene tracer methods and the direct methods have in common that significant emissions in the engine exhaust are detected for the oil consumption. However, both "mass-selective methods" can only record the unburned portions of the lubricating oil consumption, which, however, can lead to grosser misjudgments, since the method approach, based on the capturing of unburned oil emission portions in order to infer the total oil consumption, is inadmissible. From analyzes With the aid of simulation programs, it was possible to demonstrate that the ratio of burned to unburned oil emissions (share of oil combustion) is heavily dependent on the operating point and the combustion process.

   However, the pyrene tracer method according to DE 198 32 194 A1 and the direct methods "only attempt to infer the total oil consumption due to the unburned oil fraction.

   It was therefore the object of the present invention to provide a method of the type mentioned at the outset for measuring the consumption of at least one item of equipment in a motor or work machine, which is temporally high-resolution and can be used online and without any special protective measures, in particular with regard to Radiation protection, is feasible.

   To achieve this object, it is provided according to the invention that the machine is supplied with equipment which is labeled with non-radioactive isotopes of its constituents, and on the output side of the machine a physical one based on the number of atoms of the non-radioactive isotopes Size is determined as a representative size proportional to the consumption. The new measuring method, based on the above-mentioned chemically marking methods and the process disadvantages explained in this connection, is thus based on a physical marking of the equipment to be considered. With the current state of the art, analysis devices are available which can clearly and quantitatively detect even the smallest isotope traces, due to substance or mass selection, for example in engine exhaust.

   Such mass-selective and / or substance-selective measurement methods (hereinafter referred to as isotope-selective measurement methods) could be, for example, IR spectroscopy, FTIR (Fourier Transformed IR) spectroscopy, mass-spectroscopic measurement methods, NMR measurements or combinations of the methods mentioned. In general, the methodical approach of emission measurement to determine oil consumption, online capability and cylinder-selective measurement use.

   Of course, the operating resources of a machine can be subjected to a chemical conversion even during normal operation in the machine and before it exits on the output side of the machine. In this case, according to an advantageous embodiment of the method, it is provided that the physical quantity based on the number of atoms of the non-radioactive isotopes in the chemically converted equipment is determined on the output side of the machine.

   In order to record the consumption of operating resources as completely as possible, it can be provided according to a further feature of the invention that parts of the marked operating resources which are not completely converted on the output side are subjected to a similar conversion as in the machine. Such a conversion can be, for example, the complete afterburning of the equipment.

   If the physical size based on the number of atoms of the non-radioactive isotopes is advantageously determined both in the equipment that has already been converted in the machine and in the equipment that has been completely converted and the ratio of the two values is determined, influences can of course already in the Existing isotopes

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>

takes into account an exact zero value determination for the consumption measurement.

   The best possible online capability of the process, i.e. H. According to a further feature of the invention, the automatable, high-resolution and preferably also continuous feasibility can be achieved if the equipment on the output side of the machine, with the exception of any chemical conversion, is largely unchanged based on the number of atoms of the non-radioactive isotopes physical size is examined.

   Of course, the physical quantity based on the number of atoms of the non-radioactive isotopes can be determined for a partial flow of the equipment on the output side of the machine, so that not all of the equipment flow has to be recorded on the output side of the machine, which could be very expensive in the gaseous state.

   For the special case of measuring the oil consumption of internal combustion engines, in particular engines that work according to the Otto or Diesel principle or a combination of these methods, the solution to the problem can be achieved by at least a part of the lubricant of the internal combustion engine before it is started for oil consumption measurement Lubricant is added, in which at least one atom of at least one hydrocarbon compound is replaced by a non-radioactive isotope, and that the concentration of this isotope is determined by means of isotope-selective measurements. This means that combustion products in the engine exhaust tract that can be proven to come from purely physically and non-radioactively labeled lubricating oil are recorded using an isotope-selective analysis method.

  Another advantage of the detection of combustion products is that they are less responsive with e.g. 02 or other exhaust gas components at high temperatures in the exhaust tract (on the way to sampling) show as unburned components (e.g. HC's).

   To this end, it can of course also be provided that the entire lubricant of the internal combustion engine is replaced by a lubricant in which at least one atom of at least one hydrocarbon compound is replaced by a non-radioactive isotope.

   According to an advantageous embodiment of the method, the isotope-selective measurement can be preceded by a preferably catalytic afterburning of the unburned portion of the extracted partial flow of the exhaust gas, so that the unburned oil emission can also be recorded in order to ensure the optimum measurement accuracy.

   Advantageously, at least one method from the group IR spectroscopy, FTIR (Fourier Transformed IR) spectroscopy, mass spectroscopic measurement methods, NMR measurements or a combination of the methods mentioned is used for isotope-selective measurement.

   To achieve the object set out at the outset, there is also an item of equipment for use in a method as described above, which according to the invention is characterized in that it is labeled with non-radioactive isotopes of its components. It is also possible to evaluate the combustion products of lubricating oil and fuel separately.

   At least one hydrogen and / or carbon atom is advantageously replaced by a non-radioactive isotope. Non-radioactive isotopes (eg: 13C, deuterium 2H (hereinafter referred to as D)) are used as tracers, which can be incorporated into the molecular grid instead of existing C or H atoms without the relevant properties of the latter Change fuel.

   Specifically for lubricants for internal combustion engines which are intended for use in one of the methods explained above, the invention provides that at least one atom of at least one hydrocarbon compound is replaced by a non-radioactive isotope.

   According to a first alternative, at least one carbon atom can be replaced by the carbon isotope 13C.

   Alternatively or in addition, it can be provided that at least one hydrogen atom is replaced by the hydrogen isotope D.

   In order to make detection easier, it is provided according to an advantageous embodiment that several atoms per hydrocarbon compound are replaced by their non-radioactive isotopes.

   To do justice to the composition of modern lubricants from components with different chemical-physical parameters, which also differ

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>

Consumption mechanisms are subject, according to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, that each fraction of the lubricant contains the same concentration of non-radioactive isotopes of all kinds. This means that the oil consumption of each fraction can be recorded and the total consumption can be determined exactly.

   In the following description, the invention is to be explained in more detail on the basis of preferred exemplary embodiments and with reference to the attached drawings.

   1 shows a schematic representation of the sequence of the method according to the invention in an internal combustion engine, and FIG. 2 is a schematic representation of various sampling points for determining the oil consumption of an internal combustion engine according to the invention.

   The air mass L is fed to an internal combustion engine UUT, which essentially corresponds to that at Zus. 1 indicated composition, wherein the ratios u, v and w can vary to a certain extent and other components could also be present. In the combustion chamber or chambers, the air L is converted into energy with the fuel mass V, mainly consisting of hydrocarbons of the composition 2, in which the ratio numbers x, y, z can also vary and contain both aliphatic and aromatic compounds. In the internal combustion engine UUT there is also at least one other item of equipment B, for example lubricating oil, coolant, or the like.

   This equipment B is marked with a non-radioactive isotope as tracer T at least one of its components, so that the composition 3 results. Subsequently, on the output side of the internal combustion engine UUT, a physical quantity based on the number of atoms of the tracer T can be determined as a representative quantity proportional to the consumption of the operating medium B. In the case of lubricating oils which also consist mainly of hydrocarbons, the isotopes 13C and / or 2H (hereinafter referred to as D) are preferably introduced as tracer T.

   The solid lines symbolize a first main route for the consumption of the operating means, for example for the oil consumption due to combustion or evaporation of the lubricating oil from the internal combustion engine UUT.

   Via this first main route, analysis of substances leaving the internal combustion engine UUT in gaseous form by means of an immediate isotope-selective analysis MSu (MS, FTIR or a combination of these methods) or also after a previous post-combustion NV of non-converted (unburned) portions of the Resource B and then the isotope-selective analysis MS can be deduced from the consumption of the resource B. The gaseous medium - which gives it online capability - can be supplied in whole or in part, directly or diluted, for analysis. In order to take into account the natural isotope concentration in air, fuel and equipment, an analysis with untreated equipment is also preferably carried out.

   About the result E1, d. H. After the sample taken or also complete gaseous substance, for example the exhaust gas from the exhaust line of the internal combustion engine UUT, has been subjected to post-combustion from the first main path, a result E1 is obtained which takes into account the oil emission for burned and unburned components. The result E1u, on the other hand, only provides the oil emissions components burned in the engine (unburned components are not recorded).

   By forming the ratio E1u / (E1 + E1u), i.e. H. by determining the proportions of the raw emission and the converted proportions of the total consumption, an indication of the consumption mechanisms can be obtained.

   Another way for the consumption of the equipment B is symbolized by dashed lines. This could be, for example, the blowby on the crankcase of the UUT internal combustion engine or the cold side of an exhaust gas turbocharger. Here, too, the gaseous sample can be fed directly to the isotope-selective analysis MSu, or an isotope-selective analysis MS could only be carried out after afterburning. The analysis of their results E2 and / or E2u provides statements analogously the results derived from E1 and E1 u.

   An example of the application of the method according to the invention is the determination of the oil consumption of internal combustion engines, but the basic procedure also for

<Desc / Clms Page number 5>

general piston machines, such as piston compressors, can be used. In addition to the requirement to be able to quickly and effectively quantify the oil consumption of the piston-piston ring package-cylinder wall system of a piston machine, the following questions are becoming increasingly important for engines and component developers:

   is the share of exhaust gas turbocharger (ATL) oil consumption in total oil consumption? Which ATL oil consumption paths are dominant? is the efficiency of oil separators installed in crankcase ventilation? How is oil consumption due to externally lubricated pumps in the fuel injection system influenced? It was found that the leakage from injection pumps (oil-lubricated systems in the commercial vehicle sector) accounts for up to half of the total oil consumption due to the amount of lubricating oil injected into the combustion chamber via the fuel.

   So far, the above-mentioned questions could only be investigated offline and using a long test period or at best on specially adapted aggregate test benches using radionuclides (associated with considerable effort). However, the method according to the invention allows oil consumption and oil transport routes to be investigated directly on a standard engine test bench by targeted physical and non-radioactive tracing of the oil consumption source to be analyzed. The additional effort is simply the separation of the oil circuits to be examined from the overall circuit.

   2 schematically shows an engine with an exhaust gas turbocharger, comprising a turbine part TU and a compressor part VE, and an oil separator A as an example of an internal combustion engine UUT and also shows various possible locations for the removal of at least partial flows of gaseous substances from the internal combustion engine UUT for the analysis of different consumption paths and mechanisms for the lubricating oil. For example, in the exhaust line in front of the hot side of the turbocharger, i. H. before the turbine TU, the sample is taken. Analysis at 2 after the TU turbine is also possible.

   Further sampling points are located at 3 between the crankcase ventilation and oil separator A, or also behind the oil separator A at 4, in the blowby line of the exhaust gas turbocharger TU, VE at 5 (the connection of its bearing housing to the crankcase) or at 6 for the EGR , By forming the measured values 2 - 1, the turbine-side consumption of the turbocharger can be determined, the difference 3 - 4 can be used to investigate the effectiveness of the oil separator A, etc.

   In addition to the need to determine oil consumption quickly and selectively, the emission aspect is becoming increasingly important for the vehicle manufacturer in this context. With the ability of the method to determine unburned and burned parts of the oil emission separately, the developer can be helped above all by reducing engine oil-generated HC particles as well as reducing ash deposits on exhaust gas aftertreatment systems.

   In addition to a reduction in the unburned portion of the oil emission (primary influence on the exhaust gas emission of diesel engines), influences of a secondary nature must also be taken into account: combustion of the ash-forming additives of the engine oil can, on the one hand, lead to deactivation of catalyst surfaces or to an impairment of the long-term activity of exhaust gas aftertreatment systems. The secondary influences of engine oil can therefore lead to an increase in the emissions of all limited exhaust gas components. The aim of the developers must therefore be to minimize the oil input into the combustion (via valve stem seals, BBy, oil-lubricated fuel pumps, ...). Future particle limits for commercial vehicles will be 20mg / kWh (Euro IV, 2005) and 13mg / kWh (USA, 2007).

   It is known from studies that 3mg / kWh alone make up the ash emission.

   A method is used to mark the oil which ensures "fractional marking". The marking process itself is not dealt with in more detail, since it corresponds to the current state of the art to carry out exchange processes (D / 'H). It is only important to ensure that the tracer consumption - for different operating conditions (engine load points, cylinder wall temperatures, ...) - and the oil consumption are proportional to one another, which is not the case, for example, with the pyrene method according to DE 198 32 194 A1, because Here, an attempt is made to map the consumption behavior of the poly-oil as a single substance tracer.

  The same applies to the sulfur tracer.

   The combustion products of the isotope-labeled substance (e.g. 13C02, DHO, D20, ...) can

<Desc / Clms Page number 6>

can be clearly recorded with an isotope-selective analysis method due to their changed mass number. The concentration of the marker is measured in the exhaust gas (machine output) stream. In order to arrive at a quantitative value (eg: g / h), knowledge of the mass flow is necessary. For an internal combustion engine, the exhaust gas mass flow is calculated, for example, from the standard measured quantities of intake air mass and the amount of fuel consumed. Knowledge of both variables is state of the art due to the presence of standard test bench technology or by reading these variables from the engine management and therefore does not need to be explained further.

   Furthermore, the concentration of the tracer in the fuel to be analyzed (e.g. engine oil) is necessary for a desired quantification. The multiplication of the measured concentration by the prevailing mass flow (taking into account the molar mass ratios) and the reference to the marker concentration lead to a quantitative value.

   Basically, with the new method, in addition to lubricating oils, all other operating materials that run through an engine, a machine or, for example, a heat exchanger and that can be marked as described above and are gaseous before detection can be recorded with regard to their consumption. In addition to the consumption measurement, the purely qualitative detection of a consumption path or a leakage cause detection can also be important. The method is also generally suitable for detecting a leak when separating two media, such as 2-gas mixtures, for example on the partitions of a heat exchanger, for the coolant / combustion chamber gas system on the cylinder head gasket or the coolant / oil system as well on the cylinder head gasket.

   By marking the coolant or the glycol / water mixture as explained above and subsequently detecting the isotopes in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, the sealing function of cylinder head gaskets can be analyzed, for example.

   The use as a diagnostic tool for large engines (stationary engines) for early damage detection or during (initial) commissioning is also useful, for example the sealing function of a cylinder head gasket, which can also depend on tolerance errors in the manufacture of the sealing surfaces of the cylinder head / crankcase, due to component distortion (due to the pairing of different component materials for cylinder head or crankcase) or due to assembly errors (incorrect tightening torques cause component distortion ...).

   By tracing the intake air, the question of how much compression gas gets into the crankcase can be investigated. This is of particular interest to component developers of the piston-piston ring-cylinder wall system.
