Zur Herbeiführung der beschriebenen Wirkung sind mindestens zwei Ventile auf jeder Kolbenseite erforderlich ; sie ist jedoch um so kräftiger, je grösser die Zahl der Ventile und je kleiner damit der Einlassquerschnitt eines einzelnen im Verhältnis zum Gesamteinlassquerschnitt ist.
Sie bleibt, wenn auch in vermindertem Masse, bestehen, wenn statt eines einzelnen Ventiles deren zwei oder mehrere gleichzeitig in der Bewegung gehemmt sind, solange dies nicht bei allen auf einer Seite des Kolbens befindlichen der Fall ist.
Durch die Erfindung wird erreicht, dass Bewegungsstörungen in den Ventilen, die bei Verwendung nur eines Ventils Betriebsstörungen herbeiführen würden, soweit unschädlich gemacht werden dass die Maschine gut regelungsfähig bleibt, und dass auch ihre Wirtschaftlichkeit gar nicht oder nur so wenig beeinträchtigt wird, dass der Weiterbetrieb nicht in Frage gestellt ist.
Die eigenartige Wirkung ist auch nicht daran gebunden, dass die Ventile einer Gtuppe unter sich gleich sind. Es werden vielmehr Ventile, die aus baulichen Rücksichten verschieden ausgeführt sind, oder infolge von Ausführungsfehlern nicht genau unter sich übereinstimmen oder die durch den Geschwindigkeitsregler nicht genau gleich stark beeinflusst werden, trotzem nahezu gleichzeitig abschliessen.
