Process for creating and maintaining a very high vacuum, especially during distillation.
The invention relates to a method for generating and maintaining a very high vacuum, in particular during distillation, using a vacuum pump or the like. The characteristic feature of the invention is that in a vacuum chamber connected between the distillation vessel and the vacuum pump, gases of higher pressure through a small Opening or a valve or the like. Be admitted than the pressure that prevails in this vacuum space. In this way it is noticeably possible to achieve a much higher vacuum than can be achieved with a pump alone. So was z. B. found that in a vacuum apparatus in which a maximum vacuum of 710 to 720 mm could be achieved with a dry air pump,
EMI1.1
can be.
The reason for this is that the air flows through the small opening at great speed into the vacuum space and carries away the gases still in it, so that these are fed to the pump much faster than would otherwise be possible.
To achieve an even higher vacuum, you can z. B. introduce compressed or liquefied gases into the vacuum space by means of a jet device or simply through a small opening. by which of course the gases to be evacuated are carried away at a correspondingly greater speed.
The method according to the invention also has the advantage that the incoming gases, which have been greatly cooled by the expansion, precipitate the vapors escaping with the gases to be evacuated, so that no distillation product is lost.
The drawing shows, for example, a device for carrying out the method used in a distillation apparatus, a surface condenser f serving for precondensation, into which the cooling water enters at b and exits at c. The vapors flowing out of the distillation tube pass through the pipe (/ into the
Condenser f and are cooled in this. The condensate collects on the bottom of the vessel j. The non-condensed vapors now pass through a pipe into the condenser y, which is connected to the air pump through a pipe e.

gases are admitted into a vacuum space connected between the distillation vessel and the vacuum pump which are at a higher pressure than that which is generated in the vacuum space by the pump.
