Process for increasing the toughness of acacia and oak wood.
The invention relates to a method for increasing the toughness of acacia and oak trees in such a way that even the wood that has been processed without prior drying is prevented from cracking. As a result, these inferior types of wood can also be used with advantage as tool wood, in particular for the production of tool handles and for the production of spokes, while these types of wood could not be processed because of their tendency to crack and chip formation.
The tool handles produced from the wood treated according to the method, in particular the hoe handles, have the further advantageous property that the wood does not heat up when working in mountain shafts and it can therefore replace the hickory wood that has been used with preference because of this property.
The essence of the invention is that the wood is boiled at atmospheric pressure for a long period of time in a water bath heated to approximately the boiling temperature of the water and mixed with carbonated alkali, alum and a sulfuric acid heavy metal salt. In this bath, it can be freshly filled or still wet
Wood treated without prior drying and the cooked wood processed immediately after it has been removed from the bath and cooled.
A particularly well-proven embodiment is the following: 100 l of water are heated to boiling temperature and 1-5 kg of wood ash, 0.5 kg of alum and 0.1 kg of sulfuric acid copper are added. The wood is placed in this bath, which is heated to around 1000 C, and cooked for around five hours in an open vessel or a vessel covered with a perforated lid.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1 Process for increasing the toughness of acacia or oak wood and for
Elimination of the tendency of these types of wood to crack, characterized in that the wood is placed in a bath, which is mixed with carbonate of alkali, alum and a sulfuric acid heavy metal salt, heated to approximately the boiling temperature of the water and is boiled in this under atmospheric pressure.
