Cathode for electric discharge tubes, in particular X-ray tubes.

If devices for generating electrical discharges in dilute gases, in particular X-ray tubes, are to be exposed to high electrical loads, it is advisable to also energetically cool the cathode of the discharge tube. For this purpose, if the structure containing the cathode, expediently made of a substance that is not very exposed to cathode sputtering, such as aluminum, is made hollow, as is known in various embodiments of the electrodes of X-ray tubes, then it becomes necessary to include the rear end of this cathode tube to connect a piece of pipe made of suitable material, such as a piece of platinum pipe, airtight, for example by soldering or welding, to fasten the whole to the glass pipe body by melting it.

With the spatial conditions in question, this connection can be established with sufficient certainty, as experience shows, with difficulties associated with substances such as aluminum.

The invention remedies these difficulties by the fact that the aluminum or the metal that is otherwise practically not noticeably exposed to cathode sputtering and therefore forming the cathode does not participate in the airtight seal of the inside of the tube from the outside world and that this seal is instead provided by a highly thermally conductive the platinum is formed easily airtight to be connected substance, such as copper represents.

The actual cathode, consisting of the substances not noticeably exposed to the cathode atomization, which is now located entirely in the interior of the discharge tube, which is already closed without their involvement, can then be applied to the indentation of the discharge tube produced in this way, with good heat conductivity, i.e. with a sufficiently large contact surface for example, watch out or unscrew.

As an example embodiment of the new discharge tube, an X-ray tube designed according to the invention is shown schematically in the drawing in a longitudinal section through its part in question. The cathode a consisting of a substance exposed as little as possible to cathode sputtering, for example aluminum, is designed towards the rear to form a tube b, which is attached and screwed onto a tube c made of highly thermally conductive substances, for example copper, so that it completely covers it and that both tubes, b and e, are in contact with one another along a large and therefore low heat conduction resistance area.

You is a hermetically sealed tube c at its front end, which, since it is not made of aluminum, but of a material that is well suited for this purpose such as copper, can easily be reached in a satisfactory manner, hermetically sealed or soldered with a piece of platinum tube d, that in turn has melted into the glass cathode neck of the X-ray tube. A coolant, for example compressed air, water or the like, can then be introduced into the cavity within the tubes c and d in a known manner.
