Process for the extraction of precious metals from sea water.

If one filters the sea water through a bed of crushed coke according to the method described in German patent specification No. 272654 for the recovery of the gold contained in the sea water, one encounters the problem that the working period is very long. This is understood to mean the time during which a given coke filter has to be filtered until the desired enrichment in gold has occurred.

As was found, the following procedure can be used to remedy this problem.

A colloidal solution of coal is allowed to flow into the sea water to be treated, for example flowing through a canal, the amount of which - z. B. 100 cm: 10 percent carbohydrosol per 1 m3 of seawater - is to be measured according to its adsorption power and the gold content of the seawater, and after a short time counting after minutes, which is necessary to establish the adsorption equilibrium, such an amount of iron hydroxide is added , which is just necessary to flocculate the coal. The flakes are then filtered off in a suitable rapid filtration system.

The method is based on the fact that a negative sol is flocculated by a positive one. Therefore, aluminum hydroxide sol or another suitable positive sol can also be used in place of the iron hydroxide sol.

As for the manufacture of colloidal solutions of coal, so will such
 EMI1.1
Get alkalis. Chinese ink and the graphite suspensions designated as nAquadag @ also fall under the term of colloidal carbon solutions.
