<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The invention relates to a contact sleeve or a contact sleeve set consisting of conductive material, in particular stainless steel, with an approximately hollow cylindrical shape without cover surfaces for grounding for shielded cables, and a method for the electrically conductive connection of such a contact sleeve set to an exposed cable shielding braid.
Contact sleeves for the safe grounding of cable shields on metal construction parts are known per se. These sleeves are generally cylindrical in shape with open top surfaces. It should be noted, however, that the sleeve wall is closed. Such sleeves are typically used in conjunction with coaxial cables, but are not limited to this type of cable. A coaxial cable generally consists, as shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, of one or more conductor wires 1 which are surrounded by an inner insulation 2, over which a braided shield 3 made of wire strands for shielding electromagnetic interference fields from the inner conductor 1 is arranged. The structure of the shielding from a wire mesh gives the cable the flexibility required for laying.
The braided shield 3 is surrounded by an outer insulating layer 4, which electrically insulates the shield and protects it from environmental influences. The sleeves are attached to one end of the cable in such a way that a contact sleeve is pushed from the side of the end of the cable under the shield, which has been freed from the outer insulation, and a second sleeve, the inner diameter of which slightly exceeds the outer diameter of the first sleeve, and which is previously threaded onto the cable is pushed from the other side over the first sleeve and the shield, whereby the two sleeves are clamped with the shield braid between them. The main disadvantage of these known sleeves is that the cable end must be freely accessible, otherwise the sleeves cannot be pushed on.
Subsequent earthing is therefore only

has material weakening running approximately in the axis-parallel direction.
The material weakening can be designed as a continuous reduction in wall thickness and subsequent enlargement, or advantageously as a groove machined into the inner wall of the sleeve.
These innovations make it possible to arrange the sleeves on already laid cables by bending the sleeves at the slot, slipping them over the cable and bending them back together. The weakening of the material or the groove acts
EMI2.2
In order to keep the contact sleeves firmly on the braided screen, a contact sleeve set consisting of two contact sleeves according to the invention is used according to the innovation, which is characterized in that the outer diameter of one sleeve is approximately the same size as the inner diameter of the other sleeve. The smaller sleeve is pushed under the braided shield, the larger sleeve over it, which results in a clamping connection of the sleeves pushed one over the other with the braided shield between them.
Another aspect of the invention includes a system for safely grounding the shield! genuine of cables, which is characterized by a contact sleeve set according to the innovation, wherein the outer diameter of the smaller sleeve is as large as the outer diameter of the cable to be earthed, and a fastening element, for. B. a metal clamp, for electrically conductive attachment of the electrically connected to the cable shield braid set of sleeves to electrically

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Finally, the invention comprises a method for the electrically conductive connection of a set of contact sleeves according to the innovation with an exposed cable shield braid, characterized by the steps of opening or
Flaring the cable shielding braid, encircling the cable with the smaller contact sleeve in front and the larger contacting sleeve behind the point of the cable shield opening by unfolding, pulling the cable over and collapsing the sleeves, inserting the smaller sleeve under the cable shielding braid and sliding the larger sleeve over the cable shielding braid and smaller hues.
This procedure allows the sleeve set to be attached to the end of the groin as well as in the middle of the cable if the ends are not accessible. The larger sleeve is then attached over it.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 to 3 illustrate the fastening process of a sleeve set according to the invention, Fig. 4 is a sleeve according to the invention in cross section, Fig. 5 this sleeve in longitudinal section
EMI3.1
With reference to Figures 1 to 3 will now be explained how a contact sleeve set consisting of two contact sleeves 5, 8 is attached to a coaxial cable. The coaxial cable consists of a conductor core 1, which is surrounded by an inner insulation 2, above which a flexible braided shield 3 made of wire strands for shielding electromagnetic interference fields from the inner conductor 1 is arranged.
The braided shield 3 is surrounded by an outer insulating layer 4, which electrically insulates the shield and protects it from environmental influences. The coaxial cable should be grounded at the end shown. For this purpose, the outer insulation 4 is first removed from the cable in a suitable length, thus exposing the braided shield 3. The screen braid 3 can be cut to approximately the length of the contact sleeves 5, 8. Then the braid 3
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
cut or flared. A sleeve 5, which is also referred to as a support sleeve, is bent open, guided over the cable at a point near the end of the cable, free of the braided shield, and bent back together.
The outer diameter of this support sleeve 5 corresponds to the outer diameter of the coaxial cable, its inner diameter is at least as large as the outer diameter of the inner insulating layer 2. A second sleeve 8, which is also referred to as a press sleeve, is arranged over the outer insulation 4 of the coaxial cable. This press sleeve 8 is larger than the support sleeve 5, the inside diameter of the press sleeve 8 being approximately as large as the outside diameter of the support sleeve 5. Both sleeves 5, 8 each have an axially parallel slot 6 and 9, as well as a groove 7 shown only for the sleeve 5 on the side of the sleeve inner wall opposite the slot 6. The support sleeve 5 is now pushed in the direction of arrow A under the braided screen 3, whereby the state shown in FIG. 2 is created.
Now the compression sleeve 8 is pushed in the direction of arrow B over the braided screen 3 and the support sleeve 5, whereby the two sleeves are clamped one above the other with the shielding, as can be seen in FIG. 3. The inner support sleeve 5 effectively prevents pressure from being exerted on the cable from the outside, in particular by the press sleeve 8, which pressure, for example in the case of a coaxial cable, could deform the inner insulation 2 and thus change the characteristic impedance.
The connection of shield and contact sleeves was shown in Figures 1 to 3 at one end of the cable, but it is just as easy to create a connection in the middle of a cable length, which also enables subsequent installation - without disconnecting or unthreading the cable . This will be the exterior

and bent up at one or both interface ends and the support sleeve 5 pushed under the interface. The compression sleeve 8 is then pushed over the cable shield 3 and the support sleeve 5.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In Figures 4 and 5, a contact sleeve is shown in cross section and in longitudinal section.
Since the support sleeve 5 and press sleeve 8 of a contact sleeve set differ only in size, but not in shape, this illustration has for both
Sleeves validity. The sleeves 5, 8 have a cylindrical shape, the wall being divided on one side in the axis-parallel direction by a slot 6, 9 and a groove 7 being formed as a material weakening on the inside of the sleeve jacket opposite the slot. Due to the identical shape of the sleeves and the appropriate gradation of the diameters, it is possible to contact practically all commercially available cables with a small number of sleeves of different sizes.
A practical dimensioning series for sleeves made of stainless steel with a wall thickness of 1 mm consists of the values (outer diameter / inner diameter in mm) 7/5, 10/8, 13 / 11,16 / 14, 19/17 etc.
6 shows a system for the safe grounding of the shielding braid 3 in the middle of a cable length with inaccessible ends, consisting of a pair of contact sleeves 5, 8 which, as described above, is connected to the shielding 3 freed from the outer insulation 4 and one to one Grounded metal construction part 12 attached bracket clamp 10, into which a screw 11 is screwed in order to press the outer sleeve 8 against the earthed part 12 and thus to create an electrically conductive connection between the sleeve and the metal part.
