Device for the production of matrices for celluloid plates.
The invention relates to a frame for molding cold dies by means of
Metal, wood or the like, letters, woodcuts, celluloid printing plates, photo engravings or the like for the purpose of producing celluloid printing plates of any quality, thickness and composition.
An exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is illustrated in the drawing, namely FIG. 1 shows the top view of the frame used to hold the reproducing printing blocks, letters or the like, FIG. 2 shows the cross section along the line aa, FIG. 3 shows the cross section according to the line bb, FIG. 4 the bottom view of the counter-mold plate, FIG. 5 the cross section of the same and FIG
Celluloid printing plate shown.
The present frame is formed by a shallow basin 1 made of metal or other suitable material and can consist of a single or several pieces. The letters, pressure pieces or the like 3 to be reproduced are fastened in this basin by means of webs or strips 2. In order to prevent the same from moving during work, screws 4 are provided for tightening.
A cylindrical cavity is provided at each of the four corners of the basin, in which a pin 5 is attached, which is surrounded by a helical spring 6.
The molding compound 8 is applied to a counterplate 7, which for this purpose is provided with an edge two to three millimeters high. This counter plate has a hole ss at each of the four corners which corresponds to one of the pins 5 of the frame 1.
The procedure for producing celluloid printing plates is as follows: The original printing blocks, letters, woodcuts or the like to be reproduced are fastened in the frame 1, as FIG. A plastic molding compound is then spread into the recess of the counterplate? 'And the latter is then placed on the frame in such a way that the pins 5 protrude into the holes 9. The frame and counter-plate are finally placed on a suitable press, where progressively increasing pressures are exerted on the counter-plate 7 until the impression created in the plastic mass 8 is deep enough.
Here, the counter plate 7 can be removed and put back on at will, since the interaction of the pins 5 and the holes 9 ensures that the same is accurately placed, so that the depressions in the compound 8 are repeated each time. fit exactly on the protrusions of the original printing blocks, letters or the like in the frame.
In this way an exact matrix of the objects to be reproduced is produced.
After the molding compound has hardened, this die is used to produce celluloid printing plates. For this purpose, celluloid sheets softened by heat are placed on the die and strong pressure is exerted on the die until all depressions and protrusions are printed on it. The pressure can be high here because the matrix compound is held in the recess of a metal plate. In this way, plates are produced in the manner of the pattern shown in FIG. 6, from which

When producing the matrices, the originals do not need to be coated with fatty substances, so that a perfectly fine reproduction of the same is ensured.
The apparatus described offers particular advantages for producing clichés of lead letters, woodcuts, galvanos or the like, which cannot withstand excessive pressure or excessive heat. However, since the use of heat is indispensable for the production of celluloid clichés, means had to be found to reproduce these objects in a cold way using a plastic mass and without covering them with fat.
