Process for the production of paper tubes with helical grooves.

The subject of the present invention is a method for the production of paper tubes with helical, closely spaced grooves or waves according to patent no. or corrugated paper tube is compressed in the moist state in the axial direction and then dried.

The. Fig. 1 of the drawings illustrates in longitudinal section a paper tube provided with shallow grooves or corrugations; FIG. 2 shows the same representation of the product produced by the invented method.

In the paper tube according to FIG. 1, the grooves or waves provided in the wall of the tube run along a more or less flat sine line. The side walls c of the grooves located between the elevations a and the depressions b are inclined relative to the axis of the paper tube. Such grooves give the paper tube a
 EMI1.1
could set. The resistance of such a pipe to stresses directed transversely to its axis, which seek to cause the wall to indent or flatten, is also much too small.

According to the invention, the flexibility, elasticity and resistance to lateral loads are increased extraordinarily by compressing the slightly corrugated paper tube in the axial direction while it is still a little damp and drying it in this state. As shown in FIG. 2, this treatment compresses the grooves or corrugations of the paper tube close together and deepens them significantly, so that the side walls s of the grooves remaining between the elevations a and the depressions b are no longer oblique to the tube axis, but perpendicular or almost run perpendicular to it.

Such grooves give the pipe a high degree of flexibility and elasticity and resistance to lateral loads, so that, after appropriate impregnation, it is a perfect replacement for rubber hoses in every respect. Such a paper tube can be curved just as sharply as a rubber tube, even more so than this, without kinking or flattening; Its resistance to indentations is incomparably greater than that of the strongest rubber hoses due to the side walls of the grooves running perpendicular to the hose axis and can be increased as required by increasing the number of paper layers forming the wall without affecting the flexibility and elasticity of the hose.

The production of the corrugated paper tube according to FIG. 1, which serves as the starting material, is preferably carried out in such a way that a smooth paper tube is passed between a threaded spindle and a threaded nut which encloses the spindle with a clearance corresponding to the wall thickness of the paper tube.

The thread turns of the spindle and the nut cause the shallow grooves or waves in the paper wall and produce bending edges along which the flat waves lie tightly against one another when the paper tube is later axially compressed.
