Process for the production of elastic masses.
The invention aims to produce elastic masses which have a high resistance to strong pressure and which only coagulate a long time after their preparation, so that they can be conveniently used for fillings, in particular pressed into hollow tires for vehicles. It has been proposed to produce suitable masses for the intended purpose by intimately mixing gelatine or cellulose with chromium salts and heating it with glycerine, which can contain boiled linseed oil and stearic acid. If you want to use such a mass as a filling, the solid components have to be filled into the tube and only then the liquids have to be pressed in, because the mixture would solidify too quickly.
The invention, on the other hand, allows all of the constituents of the mass, including glue, to be mixed without premature coagulation occurring despite the presence of a glue precipitating agent, and this is achieved in that the mass is an agent that retards the precipitation of the glue, such as Contains lactic acid and is mainly made from cellulose, calcium chloride, filler and water. Plastic masses consisting of cellulose, glue, a tanning agent, an emollient and an oil are known; It has also been proposed to mix cellulose with calcium chloride, but then to add potash and water glass, whereby the mixture hardens like a stone with the formation of calcium carbonate and calcium silicate.
According to the invention, the following is used:
Paper cellulose is digested in the moist state, as it comes from the Dutchman, or in its place viscose or some other cellulose derivative, with previously melted and re-solidified calcium chloride with lithopone and a little glue. Small amounts of a glue-precipitating agent, such as chromium acetate, and a substance that retards the precipitation, such as lactic acid, are added to this mixture immediately before the mass is formed. The mass, which is pressed into any shape under pressure, shows, after standing for several days, elastic properties with regard to pressure which are not inferior to those of rubber.
The compound retains this property even after prolonged use, as well as at higher temperatures (60 to 800 C) and is therefore suitable as a substitute for natural rubber in all those cases in which the latter is not subjected to tensile stress.
The great cheapness of the mixture and the easy availability of the starting materials make the specified dimensions appear to be a desirable innovation from an economic point of view.
The compound is also suitable for filling vehicle tires for the production of billiard boards, elastic upholstery and similar uses.
