Description

Electric furnace for the production of zinc.

Reduction furnaces are already known in which a flame furnace is arranged above the actual electric melting furnace. which is heated by the exhaust gases. In such furnaces, however, the disadvantage has always been shown that the electrodes used for the melting furnace cannot be inserted from above without damage, since they have to pass through the flame furnace. According to the present invention, which relates to such a furnace, which is particularly suitable for melting zinc and the like. Like. Serves, the electrode for the furnace in the flame zone is surrounded by a tube and, in this way, by the
Flame protected, passed through the flame furnace from above. This protective tube is advantageously provided with openings on the side through which the material coming from the flame zone is conveyed to the reaction zone.

The transport can u in a known manner by screw conveyors. the like. A preheating room is then arranged above the flame furnace, which is not heated by a special heater, but only by conduction. The electrode can be passed through this space without special protection.

Such a furnace is shown in section in the drawing.

The furnace comprises three zones arranged one above the other, of which the uppermost is a drying zone without a special heat source, the middle is a preheating and annealing zone and the lowest is a reduction zone, consisting of a closed electrical reduction furnace. Each of the zones can be divided into two or more compartments arranged one above the other. The electrodes are led through the compartments from above and are surrounded by protective tubes that prevent them from being overheated and coming into direct contact with the flame.

The ore is first placed on an open drying plate 1, from where it passes through a central opening: 2 into a closed drying room 3, which is heated by the heat of the departments below and by the combustion gases coming from the flame chamber. From the drying room, the load arrives in the glowing room 4, which is designed as a flame furnace; Carbon oxide gas from the condensers or another gas source is supplied through the gas supply pipe 5.

In this space the charge is heated to strong red embers and finally introduced through suitable openings in the bottom of the flame furnace into the actual reaction space, which is heated in the usual way by electrical current with the aid of electrodes 7. The electrodes are introduced into the reaction space from above by passing through the other furnace compartments, protected by a tube 8.

For the introduction of the charge from the flame furnace to the electric furnace, it has proven to be advantageous to use the openings made in the intermediate vault for the electrode leadthrough, by making them correspondingly large. This avoids the weakening of the vault by externally attaching charging openings and bringing the charging precisely to the point where the melting takes place fastest.

The sealing around the electrodes is done conveniently by loose firebrick panels which are covered by a powdery material 9, preferably consisting of the charge or one of its components.

The load is transported over the vault through the various feed-through openings advantageously with the aid of cooled transport screws 10.
