Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

  Process of recovering soda and copper from cellulose sludge containing heavy metals, especially copper.

   Caustic soda dissolves organic matter when it acts on wood pulp and cellulose. These organic substances can be removed by adding heavy metal salts such as copper sulfate. can be precipitated from the eye of waste (Austrian patent no. 62640). After the lye is pressed from the sludge, it forms an annoying waste with which valuable substances such as sodium bicarbonate and copper are lost in a previously unusable form or from which they can only be recovered in a laborious way. A work-up of the sludge has now been found in which the copper and soda are recovered in a surprisingly simple manner. The method consists in heating the sludge in autoclaves for a certain period of time, e.g. B. three hours at 3 atm.

   The organic part of the precipitate goes into solution and the copper is completely precipitated as copper oxide or metallic copper. A lye is obtained which, despite its brown color, can still be used for many purposes, and all of the copper is returned as copper oxide. If the pressure is low, you have to heat for longer. If high pressure is used, the heating can be shortened.
